Wii/U Super Mario 3D World

No it definitely looks better graphically. What is bland is the actual game.

By the time this Mario will be out the Wii U would have been at a very tasty price. Although I like the feel of SM2 which is one of my favs game of all time I just dislike how this looks.

From G1 and G2 this is a step back.

Whilst i'll still buy it and no doubt enjoy it. I think we can safely say this is the first time, in a long time, that a Sonic game looks to be superior to a Mario game.

This definitely has a "need to release a 3d mario quickly" vibe to it. hopefully now they can get to work on the next unique Mario adventure, having now covered both handheld series upgrades........ i swear if we get NSMB U 2 i will sell the console.

Tokyo One hasn't released a full game on their own for going on six years (their last one was SMG1, the two after that have been co-productions [Two Zelda ports - OoT for 3DS and Four Swords for DS]).

In the same time, Tokyo Two has produced SMG2, 3D Land and 3D World.

NSMB U2

Mario take time out between levels to big note himself about feeding starving children in Rwanda etc etc

Will buy this, I think the 3DS game was as good a platformer as has ever been made actually.

There's something a little disappointing about a straight up Mario sequel - I was hoping for something more ambitious.

As Glinn says, you know WHY they're releasing sequels to proven commercial and critical darlings, though.

PS - not really the thread for this, but I wish these cakeholes (is that even an insult?) as Nintendo would get a wriggle on an flood the virtual console shop with games. This 1 or 2 seemingly randomly selected games that get released every week is beyond a joke, especially considering there have been almost no new retail games released in like 7 months now. COME ON!

So I know what you guys are gonna think by my following post, but this is a genuine question (and it may have already been answered with this 'not ready' thing).

But what's going on with the graphics? I don't mean art style, but graphical fidelity.

Mario Kart 8, X, Wonderful 101, SSB & DKC all look very good graphically. Sharp, clean, high res and some good lighting, some with big scope, etc. etc. etc.

But this looks terrible? Textures look flat and stretched, minimal detail around the levels, seemingly no anti-aliasing. This looks like an up-res Wii game at best.

This is Wii U ONLY isn't it? Or will there be a 3DS version? Because I wouldn't be surprised if they've made the game on 3DS and ported it up to the Wii U to save on dev time.

Something just looks off. And I know these games aren't about graphics and all that, but compared to the other stuff on show this one just looks bland as hell. The Wii Mario's looked better than this!
You must have changed your mind by now? It looks great.

Yeah I didn't mind it either. Think it's going to be one of those games you need to go in with an open mind and not pre conceived ideas of Mario games.

Wish they had have been more bold/risky with the development of a new game, but still think this will be a very fun game.

Doesn't have the same groundbreaking feel that Galaxy did. I hope this is just a spin-off type deal like Mario Bros Wii was and we get a main Mario title.
Still looks good but not must buy the console good like Galaxy. I would have even liked a slightly upgraded no real innovations version of Galaxy, much like Sunshine was to Mario 64. Sunshine I felt copped a bad wrap, there were a few annoyances for sure but it got viewed harshly because of the high standard in innovation Mario 64 was held to.

Unsurprisingly, reviews are green across the board.

GOTY contender.

Will be a fantastic game, but it doesn't have the scope or the narrative gravitas to beat out the top contenders of this years crop.

A worthy member of the aristocracy though.

'Narrative gravitas' only apply to games that focus on them.

This isn't the Oscars.

It's not the Oscars but the game doesn't exactly push any boundaries.

This isn't a Mario Galaxy release, the game isn't doing enough new to be a contender. If you aren't being original then you have to tell a story worthy of putting you in the ball park.

This has been the best year for gaming in some time. It just doesn't do enough to be a contender, but that's not taking anything away from it.

Only one organisation that does a GotY has released their nominees - it happens to also be the most well known one.

Guess which game is on there?

I suspect that when you say it needs to 'push boundaries' you actually mean a particular set of boundaries, because pretty much every review so far has praised the game for being inventive, creative, unique and the like.

Fair enough but it won't win. It might be inventive and creative within its own formula, but it isn't pushing anything forward. It is simply an extension of a great formula. I won't begrudge it for that, but it won't be winning many GotY awards.

I would argue that there are only 3 genuine GotY contenders TLOU, Bioshock & GTA. All three of them have pushed the industry forward with a combination of narrative & gameplay mechanics. Everything else is just window dressing at this point.

Admittedly the new Zelda may change that.

As I said before it isn't GotY but is in the chasing pack for being excellent at what it does.
