Movie Superman

The other thing I hated was his parents being absolute morons. They can be farmers without being idiots. Was disappointed in that.
Laughed at this cos it's true. They really were portrayed as bumpkins.

Saw this tonight with my kids and we all loved it. Was more light hearted than previous Superman movies and very funny overall (though some parts were bordering on cringe for me it never crossed the line - mainly
the parts with Green Lantern
)

Probably my favourite Superman movie though I haven't seen the originals for a number of years. Am very keen to see how the DCU plays out now, i don't think I've enjoyed a non-Batman DC movie this much ever (excluding the DC animated movies which are generally pretty good).

I didn't read reviews and avoid previews so not sure how this is being received. I presume the political commentary isn't going down well in certain parts.

I’ve seen this complaint a few times and I don’t really think they were idiots, just ‘old fashioned’ - and served in a way to explain where Clark gets his ‘golly gee whiz’ demeanour.

A fair few Hollywood scoopers have said they think it’s more likely that Pattinson will be DCU’s Batman now with the Brave and the Bold project getting shelved.

I think Gunn wants a unified DCU and no elsewords stories despite what he has said publicly. Reeves wants to stay separate IMO. Plus the tones dont match for me.

I actually see both sides but whatever happens Gunn will be the villian in the end which i think is a bit unfair as its a problem he inherited.

I saw in one recent interview he kinda slipped up when asked who will be Batman he just said Rob Pattinson is Batman.

I personally want to see an comic book/the animated show version of Batman in the DCU with a really stylised Gotham city similar to the animated series. I dont see how Pattinson's version becomes that.

Your last two posts make good poijts too. Echoes some of The Critical Drinkers takes as well. I don't want to be a party pooper, I know many people loved it, or had poaitive vibes for the most part, but for me I really disliked the movie....for all the reasons you made, reasons Critical Drinker made, and that imdb guy (and others opinions on Imdb who disnt like it). Essentially, theres a percentage of people who didnt like it and they all echoe each others reasons.

For me...if youre gonna reboot Superman, you stil have to do the origin backstory. You still have to show SM's struggles fitting in as a boy, the sacrifices his parents made, the burdens of being a savior as he matured, etc. And you have to give reason for Lex's motivations and path to being all out agaijst SM, etc. I know it's all been done to death before, so I can understand the reasoning behind trying something different. Like, the new The Batman also decided to kickoff without the backstory, several years into his early life as Batman. So there's precedence there. Just as a new reboot multi-movie production line, i just felt it still needs all that character development. There's probably some leeway or interpretations in trying a few different things, looking at the origin story from a different perspective, a different twist or angle not done before. The next installment could then have been what this movie was, say. Also, I do agree about Gunn and his style suiting Guardians, band of colleagues, limited ability in him focusing on a main single character and developing them. Also his tired Guardians type humor that he needs to grow out of, trest each movie or character or IP as its own thing instead of forcing everythijg into the same mould/formula. And I really do agree with the imdb i screenshot, thought the same thing when watching -- how there was no real connectivity with the world outside their bubbles (lex, kent). It's unfortunately Hollywood in the end, have to be all whizz bang action and CGI blockbusterish rather than doing something really edgy or deep.
Origin story has been done to death.
I loved that they jumped straight into an established universe.

I can't agree with that review you posted. Reads like it was written by a Snyder lover who wanted to rip the movie, but by pretending to sound impartial and constructive.
Lex had some of the best dialogue in the movie and I barely remember him calling out the codes apart from 1A, 1A, 1A, which was also part of another great bit of dialogue from him.

I can see Gunn just staying away from Batman for the time being. maybe wait for the 2nd Pattinson movie to be done, then decide what to do. Pattinson may be done with Batman after the 2nd movie and then they can just recast a Batman that fits into Gunns DCU.

I dont think they can afford to wait that long. They just got the script and its not scheduled to release until 2027.

For all we know Gunn has already decided which DCU movie Batman will appear in as he has hinted at several unnanounced projecrs.

Doesn’t the concept that you’ve seen this complaint a few times, means they may have missed the mark?

I get what they were going for but I think it went too far that way (at least initially).

He wanted to wipe the slate clean (which was fair) but then cherry picked what was cannon, including mixed messages about what upcoming at the time, IIRC Blue Beetle was leading into Creature Commandos and Superman, and Flash was considered to have reset the universe. Since then sounds like he's flip flopped on that.

Still keeps Peacemaker but then says the JL cameo isn't cannon.

I mean, it's not wrong he inherited a mess, but he's still re-creating some of the problems he's inherited, which ironically were the biggest issues with the old DCEU. Unclear continuity and rushing through introduction of characters.

He said Blue Beetle the character would be in the DCU and I assume the actor would stay the same if he appears again.
But he made it clear they did not produce the movie so that one is not canon.

I agree about the peacemaker stuff.

I dont know if he actually said the flash reset the universe himself, that story was out there but I am not sure he actually said it. He did say it was the best comic book movie ever or something like that which he should not have said.

Yes I saw this article doing the rounds again recently, he does say The Flash was a “reset” of sorts however there’s ambiguity in what actually means. I get the sense they’re kinda making some of that stuff up as they go along to figure things out. It does muddy the waters a bit publicly when cherry picking things like Peacemaker whilst rebooting others (Superman, Wonder Woman etc and soon to be Batman).

Blue Beetle I really did enjoy. Unfortunately those last few films, Shazam 2 and Aquaman 2 etc, were just doomed overall given the announcements prior. Very little enthusiasm remained for them.

What could’ve been though in the year or two prior. If it wasn’t for all that Ezra shit, The Flash could’ve been a significant success, Keaton’s Batman Beyond film may have happened, Batgirl too perhaps would’ve been released. And who knows, perhaps some kind of culmination (animated or otherwise) for the Snyder Cut. It is what it is hey, what a rocky road it’s been for DC over the years.

They kind of shot themselves in the foot by committing to a 2nd Pattinson movie while claiming it will be separate to the new universe.
The timing has backed them into a corner.
You're rebooting a franchise, so you want to start with your cornerstone characters.
It makes sense that you would prioritise Batman after Superman, but you can't have 2 completely different versions coming out in close succession.

So they either need to can the 2nd Pattinson movie, which would be a shame because I enjoyed it and it deserved a sequel. Or continue with Pattinson and shoehorn him into the new universe.

This is true BUT also what could make it great. Batman can't be treated the same way as this Superman movie is as the character demands a darker tone - Superman on the other hand fits way better with the comedic/more light hearted tone and falls flat when it tries to be too dark.

Would be very interesting to see how they could mesh the two.

8 more days and I MIGHT finally go and see it. In the meantime I'm trying to embrace the avalanche of Superman merch.... even when I'm not that nig of a fan of the S shield lol (give me the classic!!).

That said new Superman wallet, socks and keyring are mine!!
The S they went for is based on Superman: Kingdom Come which has always been a fan favourite design.

I think people tend to like it because it's a bit more alien looking, but the classic S is definitely more marketable.

Not a huge fan of it

Enjoyed the movie, but this was the worst part of it, for me.

2 Supermen fighting, they should be belting the shit out of each other with more power and speed than human comprehension. Superman basically waiting to get punched by Ultraman, while Ultraman is waiting for instructions from Lex...

Was stupid, in my opinion. Could live with it for the first fight, but doing it repeatedly was cringey as hell.

A few other small moments which I felt were a bit over the top (parents crossed the line from country people to hicks), and I feel like they nerfed Supes a bit too much, but overall, still solid, was nice and fun.

7/10.
