I don’t think they’re morons but they’re definitely on the simple side. Didn’t mind it.

I have to admit that I am not a huge superhero fan. My favorite ones are the Nolan batman movies and watchmen, easily by far the best comic book / superhero movies for me anyway.

I am not sure if I was the target audience for this movie, but overall, I thought it was fun, and at the end of the day that's what it's all about. It was a bit crammed at times and bit much going on, reminded me of the old original movies which is not a bad thing. Would I watch it again, probably not but it was a fun action/comedy movie.

Man of Steel yes it did draw upon elements from the comics, it also took some liberties in its reinterpretation. Largely led by Snyder who wanted to deconstruct the character, which came at the expense of the usual hopeful, lighter hearted tone.

I liked Man Of Steel, the opening Krypton sequence was glorious, Hans Zimmer’s score is epic and the oil rig scene always gets me. The final hour and the deviations Snyder took were my main issues. The killing of Zod is contentious however the mindless destruction of buildings etc in Metropolis is something not associated or identified with a comic accurate Superman.

This is where I feel this whole Snyder dud v genius thing gets in the way of the actual films. He didn't deconstruct the character for mine, he just showed a different path to becoming Superman. In 78 he goes to fortress, changes actors, and comes out older. In this, it takes longer to find the truth and he becomes a man during this time.

What we don't get is much character development for Superman, as MOS is a reactionary story and BvS fails to give Supes any weight.

Snyder frequently uses the deconstruction reference, his own words, in interviews regarding Superman, Batman, Watchmen etc.

Really think I need to see this again. The more I think about it, the more I like it.
Hoult is creeping up to the best on screen Lex. I grew up with Hackman, thought Spacey was a great modern interpretation of Gene's Lex. Loved Rosenbaum in Smallville, but this just feels next level. Hope we get to see more of him.

Thinking that Ultraman comes back at some point as Bizarro. I think it would be hilarious if Lex's demise ultimately comes at the hands of Bizarro. As Lex tries to manipulate him like he did Ultraman and he just pounds into Lex's face screaming 1A, 1A, 1A.

While I doubt it will happen, as it's already been publicly announced that it won't, I'd love to see Pattinson's Batman in this universe. I think the vast contrast in characters would work really well. Batman being very dark and not fussed about people dying. Superman being very bright and trying not to kill giant Kaijus or squirrels.
Seeing them try to work together in the JL and find common ground (not Martha - although I could see Gunn making a throw away joke about it).

This new universe is off to a good start. Hopefully it builds properly from here.

Yes the Rosenbaum portrayal was fantastic, really enjoyed that arc in Smallville. Speaking of which, he cameod in this film as a voice actor which is a great little nod for him.

The Pattinson/Reeves world is just too far apart for the continuity to work, and personally am glad they ended the speculation of it. Aside from the obvious (metahumans existing for 300 years), I like that Reeves will be given the freedom to cook in his own pocket of the universe with his Batman/Penguin world.

Bizarro would be great next up, Gunn has sowed the seeds for that to continue.

Corenswet is a really good actor.

Say what you want about Gunn but he nailed the casting all round, except for maybe Hawkgirl. It may have been the writing that let her down though.

Eve was the MVP, now that is how your subvert expectations. Well played Gunn.

Was hoping to see Clark and Jimmy relationship more.

I see a minor controversy around Jor-el. Easy retcon there if they want to, just reveal it was Brainiac in the sequel.

Speaking of I did see something today about someone asking Gunn about the sequel his response was "define sequel".

People were speculating weeks ago next up could be a Worlds Finest movie.

Going to see this tonight with my 14 year old, I don't know if he even really cares for Superman but he was keen to come along so hopefully he enjoys it... as a kid (and tbh now as a 42 year old man) Superman was always my favourite.. So i hope he can experience that tonight

I’ve heard Worlds Finest mentioned a few times, I don’t know if it’s originated via Gunn or not. However think that would be a brilliant concept. There’s an established world here to play within, Worlds Finest has phenomenal potential.

I need to see the movie again, but the flaws for me are standing out a bit more. Superman is my GOAT fictional character, so my expectations are higher.

I think Gunn is great at doing ensemble character movies, but don't think he has it in him to do a story where the main character is doing the heavy lifting in the film.

Kinda get that there was too much Guardians DNA in it (humour undercutting serious scenes quite a lot which works with Guardians, but not here)

The film is still a tonne of fun, and a lot right. I think future films will determine how this is viewed in time. I hope he goes the less is more route in future movies.

Jonathan Kent's speech to Clark was so cliched and textbook though.

Pruitt Taylor Vince is a great actor but felt like he was wasted here, but never thought he was right to begin with.

Not sure about the comics, but most portrayals of Martha portray her as the sage woman ready Clark goes for advice as much as Lois.

I can't see this incarnation of Martha being anything like that.

Thought this imdb review made some good points....

Reckon that's a bit off the mark.

Hoult and Brosnahan were great and nailed what they were given. That being said, the amount of dialogue given to the side characters was taken at the expense of fleshing out Lex and Lois. Especially when you have a 2 hour run time with a shitonne of action - it's robbing the movie of real meat on the bone.

Its the stuff that robbed it from being a great movie instead of a good movie.

Your last two posts make good poijts too. Echoes some of The Critical Drinkers takes as well. I don't want to be a party pooper, I know many people loved it, or had poaitive vibes for the most part, but for me I really disliked the movie....for all the reasons you made, reasons Critical Drinker made, and that imdb guy (and others opinions on Imdb who disnt like it). Essentially, theres a percentage of people who didnt like it and they all echoe each others reasons.

For me...if youre gonna reboot Superman, you stil have to do the origin backstory. You still have to show SM's struggles fitting in as a boy, the sacrifices his parents made, the burdens of being a savior as he matured, etc. And you have to give reason for Lex's motivations and path to being all out agaijst SM, etc. I know it's all been done to death before, so I can understand the reasoning behind trying something different. Like, the new The Batman also decided to kickoff without the backstory, several years into his early life as Batman. So there's precedence there. Just as a new reboot multi-movie production line, i just felt it still needs all that character development. There's probably some leeway or interpretations in trying a few different things, looking at the origin story from a different perspective, a different twist or angle not done before. The next installment could then have been what this movie was, say. Also, I do agree about Gunn and his style suiting Guardians, band of colleagues, limited ability in him focusing on a main single character and developing them. Also his tired Guardians type humor that he needs to grow out of, trest each movie or character or IP as its own thing instead of forcing everythijg into the same mould/formula. And I really do agree with the imdb i screenshot, thought the same thing when watching -- how there was no real connectivity with the world outside their bubbles (lex, kent). It's unfortunately Hollywood in the end, have to be all whizz bang action and CGI blockbusterish rather than doing something really edgy or deep.

Well I really enjoyed it, and more importantly my son loved it.
I thought the whole cast basically was really good, the new Superman is perfect in the role, they did a great a job at humanising him, Lex is so diabolical he's amazing. Loved Mr Terrific a character I'll admit I knew absolutely nothing about. I was a bit worried about Krypto and how that would go but tbh he almost stole the show.. Was fantastic.

It was full on and not much time to catch your breath but a really good start to the reboot

Enjoyed how they really only let Superman unleash his full power once, and he absolutely obliterated the army of raptors in about 12 seconds when he did
