To see that Joel Bowden sits in 6th in the league for tackles with 50. Good to see but it suprised me.

He was also better on friday night than what has been in previous weeks.

actually kretchy i feel that bowden was our best player after richo on fri night, at times his turning and field kicking was nothing short of sublime, best game hes played for seasons, ok his direct opponent simpson had 9 clearances but i feel that he hurt simpson almost as much, no mean feat as simp IMHO is one of the premier on-ballers in the comp.

theres no doubt in the past 2-3 weeks hes certainly stepped up,

this could be a shot in the dark but methinks hes realised that hes being left behind by the likes of sugar, coghs and is now by no means one of our premier players, i hope thats hurt him and motivated him to tap into his huge talent.

But how good have those tackles been? All too often Bowden's tackles are weak ones without much vigour that enable the person being tackled to dispose of the ball without too much trouble. Very rarely have I seen Bowden lay tackles that see the opponent lose possession or have the ball held to him, unable to dispose of it.

Richmond's tackling hasn't been great this season, especially the past few weeks. Against Sydney it was particularly poor.

He laid one against Hawthorn that any Rugby League prop would have been proud of. Head down, shoulder into the guts. Stopped whoever it was in their tracks, sat them on their arse and left them feeling pretty sore.

IMV, Bowden has been OK this year. 90% of what he does is good - it's just when he tries being too cute that he lets himself down. I would also suggest that the 'cute' factor is less prevalent in his game this year.

Found a stat on Joel Bowden's tackling effectivenes on the pro stats website.

Of his tackles 46% of them are effective. Not sure what an effective tackle is classed as though. I'm assuming that it would be a tackle that doesn't allow the player to dispose of the ball and results in a ball-up or a free kick to the tackler. Compare this to Mark Coughlan who most would consider one of our best tacklers an effectiveness of 50%.
