Surely an Al Clarkson congratulatory thread is in order.

Who is the greatest AFL coach of the past 10 years?

I think a lot of us in 09/10 wondered what had happened to the team and Clarko

Now I hope he coaches the Hawks to many more flags and then retires a one Club coach
I think that period just goes to show that stability in a footy club is very important, it was very tempting for many people to demand clarko be sacked in this period but our strong football club stuck to their guns and backed him in now look at us.

I never had doubts about Clarko, even in the period 2009-2012. I liked the way the club went about choosing him (thank god we didn't end up with Terry Wallet!). I knew we were looking at the long term and had a good gut feeling that the decision makers knew what they were doing.

I'm another who went "who" when it was announced and in those early years when players were leaving all over the place and we were playing horrible football and losing badly, I was thinking that the board had made a massive blunder.

Ten years on and it's probably dunstall we should be bowing to as it was a coaching master stroke. Every year coaches try to copy or beat his game plan and every year he tweaks or changes it. He is exacting and demanding of his players and yet they seem to like and respect him - I heard hodge refer to him as "cockroach" yesterday :DHe is intolerant of fools and lets them know regardless of their position in the game, he is passionate and has a wee temper as evidenced in a 'couple of incidents" that has seen him crucified in the media but also respectful, humble and loyal to a fault.

He now stands alongside Kennedy and Jeans, immortals

Don't worry about that. We had people calling for Clarko to be sacked every time we lost to Geelong after 08. "No Plan B, too stubborn to try something new, underachieved with the most talented list etc etc".

Bloke is a genius. To think f#$kwits out there still think Ross Lyon is a better coach. Seriously, the guy has won nothing and Clarko has 3 flags next to his name, plays a proper brand of footy and has managed to change his style at least 4 times now to continue our improvement and gain success.

Thank god we have this little mad man. May he stay as long as he wants

In another thread I posted the Hawthorn coaching stats for Clarko, Jeans & JK Snr prior to this season: http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/afl-preview-of-hawthorn-2014.1053260/#post-32118571

Stats post-2014 season:
Kennedy - 14 seasons, 299 games (win % 60.53), 6 finals series, 5 GFs, 3 flags
Jeans - 9 seasons, 221 games (win % 71.94), 8 finals series, 6 GFs, 3 flags
Clarkson - 10 seasons, 233 games (win % 62.02), 7 finals series, 4 GFs, 3 flags

Clarko's win % has gone up 1.5%, but still trails Yabby in that regard. Has the best record of the three in terms of flags / GFs.

The man is driven, successful, professional, humble, strategic, a leader of men and most importantly he is ours. He has developed leaders and the whole of the AFL needs to recognise that it has been drive and determination that have allowed forward facing teams to defeats the negative influences of Roos and Lyon.

You might recognise the fact I think the fella is pretty special.

Well done Clarko, you are a true legend of the Hawthorn Football club even before winning your third premiership as coach.

It amazes me that you have never won the AFL 'Coach of the Year' award but I'm sure those individual awards don't mean much to you as team success.

Thank you!

Not only did he re-invent the game plan, he has matured as a coach and empowered the people around him through his leadership.

Give him a 5year contract and open cheque book.

And it was so close to being 4 but lets not dwell on the past.

So much to look forward to for 2015.

As far as Jarman is concerned, Clarko will only be with us for another 7 hours. He was meant to announce the move to the Crows today wasn't he?
Saw Jarman outside the ground on saturday, shook his hand, he seemed surprised that he was recognised...he was a great player for us but he's a clown now...

Mate of mine forwarded this video of a chat he had on Talking Footy back in 2011. Just shows how much of a strategist and forward-thinker he is, after the Hawks faltered in the seasons after the '08 win, and how much he was adjusting his game-plan from the one he used in 2008.

So proud of Clarko and so happy he is now among the greats of the game with three Premierships. Long may his reign continue.

It was Andrew who made the call about Clarko moving to the Crows, not Darren.
The two Jarmans are chalk and cheese.

Andrew not in same class as Darren as far as football goes.

Always thought A. Jarman was a bit of a tosser both on and off the field.

IMHO Andrew Jarman used to talk about doing it, Darren Jarman just used to do it.

Hardest working coach in the business, always trying to better himself and the club. He brings a culture and environment that invites success and with the B2B can now be listed in the same elite category as Kennedy and Jeans. Congrats Clarko, now the hard part - trying to inspire the group to B2B2B.

Addendum: There was a poll? On the Hawthorn board? Listing a Hawthorn coach against other coaches? Geez, wonder who'll win that?

I think you're being a bit tough on Andrew Jarman. Sure, he's a tosser, of that there can be no doubt, but he was a very good player. Not the complete package like his brother Darren but was a very damaging midfielder. As a media person, he makes a good footballer.
