She faked unconsciousness to get him to let go of her hair. If she'd drowned and he just paddled off, would anybody even know it wasn't an accident?

A man will appear in court next month accused of holding a woman's head underwater during an alleged surf-rage incident on the New South Wales north coast.

It is alleged the 55-year-old pushed the woman underwater three times after the man, riding a surf mat, and the woman's board collided at Lennox Point last month.

Detective Chief Inspector Cameron Lindsay said the man was charged this week with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

"We will allege that he held this female underwater to the point that she thought she was going to drown," he said.

"She was able to break free and get some air … we will also allege she faked being unconscious and was let go."

Police said they had heard of other surf-rage incidents at Lennox Point, and urged any witnesses to come forward.

"The message from police is to respect each other in the water, and the laws apply not only on land, but also in the surf," Chief Inspector Lindsay said.

Surf Rage was around for decades before road rage and every other rage they go on about nowadays.

As a 50 year who grew up not far from the surf coast in Vic and had a heap of mates who surfed, I used to hear about incidents all the time happening out in the water.

My brothers surfed, they never said much. After an incident when I was only about 7 years old paddling in the shallows when a bull shark I think it was, came in too close they couldnt get me on a surfboard. I sail and fish, fishers don't swim for fun they know what's in there!

"A Lennox Head man (allegedly) did this week. All we know is this: witnesses report the man, a 56-year-old surfer and mat rider, became enraged at the 54-year-old female surfer after the two got tangled up on a wave.

For reasons only he'd know, he then pushed her head underwater over and over and over again. Eventually, the woman went limp to fool her attacker, and he released her.

Lennox is a crowded playground, with many people on many kinds of surf toys all trying to share the same sandbox. Probably shouldn't have to court death by murder to surf there.

Her alleged assailant was a local man named Mark Thompson. He denies the charges that he forcefully dunked Cooper, instead insisting that the two merely became entangled after colliding on a wave."

If she'd drowned met, would anybody even suspect what had really happened?
