When I was in year 11 we were playing brandy in the school Gym. I was running flat out but not looking where I was going and smashed my knee into a steel girder.
Got Xrayed etc, dislocated Knee cap which was cracked, some floating bone and tendon damage. When they weighed me for the anesthetic I couldn't put all my weight down so I think they messed up the dose, not enough.

I don't remember what happened after the op, but apparently I went nuts trying to punch Nurses, telling people where to go etc, I have zero memory of that. I had plaster from the top of my thigh down to my Ankle, there was a tube inserted into my leg just above the knee to drain bleeding. When they came to pull that tube out my mum was with me and told me it wouldn't hurt, she worked at the hospital, she lied. :(

It's the worst pain I've felt, they pulled and cut the tube and I screamed like I was being murdered, I could feel it sucking inside my leg. I had pretty bad pain for a week or 2 after the op but then it settled down. I was in the plaster for 3 months, knitting needles came in handy. I still remember this blonde nurse I had, she was smoking.
My "promising" football career ended, I lost all confidence in the knee after that. This was in 1990, I get really bad arthritis from it now, at the back of the knee and above it. I've seen a few peoples scars who've had recent knee recos and the cut is small, mine looks like that opened me up with an axe....

Few times for Teeth extractions, once for a shattered elbow, once more for tonsils + adenoids but barely remember that one. Have wisdom teeth to come out eventually, scaring the shit out of me since I react rather badly to anesthesia and have to go in for blood tests beforehand and have all the incisions packed with coagulating agent soaked gauze type shit...

Best part the blood test last time I had it done was something like 9 vials, test has to be done fairly fast too from memory, had a chair waiting for me at box hill hospital with an appointment to get it done.

I got my left hand stuck in a pizza dough roller, came out twice the size it usually is and as a result I have 2 inch scars down each of my three middle fingers and arthritis in my thumb. Was interesting to watch the quack slice up my hand though. I was sitting on the chair next to her chatting away as it was being done.

I've had something similar. I burned my right hand with burning oil, all over my fingers and knuckles. So it all blistered, and the skin died, and I had to get it cut off after a couple of weeks. Really weird watching the doctor just cut away at your skin with scissors, and not feeling a thing. Creepy.

Having had a procedure done under a local when the anesthetic wore off, it stops being creepy very fast when all of a sudden you feel the scalpel. Likewise if they hit an area where the block isn't its like la la la scalpel in the toe, no pai.... holy shit!

Been very lucky with next to nothing.

Only thing which probably counts is getting grommets put in my ears as a young kid, due to getting crazy bad ear infections.

Broke my nose playing cricket but never required any work on it.

Had a vasectomy a while back

Doc, I'd like the snip
I do Fridays, which date
March 23
Why that date?
The Cricket test is on
I'm away that week
Do you have the internet?
Yes?
Please go to CricInfo. What date does the Second Test Start?
March 29
Book it in. I can lie on the couch all weekend and watch the cricket
You know you can walk around and do things right?
Don't tell my wife that.

Heart/lung bypass.
Sternotomy.
ECMO (Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation).
Emergency surgery for internal bleeding.
Tracheostomy because they couldn't do it while I was awake and just in the room for some reason.

And +1 for Morphine. So good.
Damn mate, quite a few life threatening operations there.

Great to see that you got through them all. :)

I had my tonsils and adenoids removed when I was a kid, then my adenoids again at 17 because they grew back
Getting my 4 wisdom teeth out was the worst.. I couldn't eat pumpkin soup, up'n'go's or ice cream for a while after getting over that. I was completely miserable for about 2 weeks after the operation, the first night I couldn't even open my mouth wide enough to get a baby toothbrush in my mouth properly..bad times.

Geeze lucky my experience with getting my wisdom teeth out wasnt as bad as yours!

I was on a flight to the States.. oh 6 days later.

I should note that the constant pain and bleeding whenever I ate was worse than than the not being able to eat ice cream again part. Did take a good few days for me to open my mouth enough to talk properly too though.

You didn't time that well o_O

I forgot about my wisdom teeth operation.

Jesus, thats horrible, you poor thing.

Well, my dentist did warn me I needed them out "sometime". But my cousin in law (who is a dentist) advised me that if they werent bothering me or causing me pain, dont bother. So I didnt, then did the usual- dental check up before going OS and then they told me they needed to come out. Now. Not even when I got back.

But yeah, like I said I recovered ok. The first 2-3 days were the absolute worst tho- very painful. And i had to cancel everything- my going away party, etc. Was shitting myself too, cause I heard toothache pain is like a hundred times worse when you are on a plane. But again, was lucky, didnt have any issues.

You were quite lucky, still not a fun experience though!

I got mine out when I did because I'd been told they needed to come out at some point and I didn't want to risk needing it when I was overseas for 5 months. Then at my check up I decided to take the next available appointment so that my chances of being able to eat Christmas lunch were improved :D (I did :thumbsu:).

They told me I had a pretty bad reaction, but not out of the ordinary either I think.

You're also meant to have a follow up appointment like 2-3 weeks after? I had that day 5 LOL. Yes, I was very lucky.

Yours sounds horrible. Like I said before, least they dont grow back. :thumbsu:

What was your experience of that like? From most reports it sounds much more painful than the knee operations so I'm really not looking forward to it. It seems most of these medical things always occur in an intense burst.

Wasn't 100% until 2 weeks following the operation.

First day back I thought I'd fight it like a hero and have something solid to eat (can't remember what). Wasn't too bad despite tasting some blood with it, do not recommend it though if you're wanting it to heal ASAP. Jaw was unable to move properly for about a week following.

Like everything, just gotta let it rest. Keep the ice on your jaw as much as possible during that first day and night to reduce swelling, won't stop it bloating your face however! Will be throbbing for that 2 weeks following, have to distract yourself as much as possible.

Soup is good, up'n'gos and not fully frozen zooper doopers are also good. Any other Qs fire away.
