Jacob Surjan

Details:
Club: South Coogee/South Fremantle
DOB: 15 Aug 85 Hgt: 179cm Wgt: 75kg
Position: Onballer/Half Forward Flank
Natural foot: Left

Honours:
Westen Australia 2003
National Draft Camp Invitee 2003

Profile:
Fairly small onballer who loves to go forward and kick the impossible goal. Surjan has been touted as a top 10 pick by some people, I'm not sure if he worth that much but he should definitely be picked up.

Had a pretty good carnival for WA, in particular the first game against Vic Country at the G. Both of his goals were fantastic snaps, really knows how to find the big sticks. He always looks dangerous with the ball and is so elusive he would be hard to close down.

Jacob hits the ball at pace and also has a massive leap on him for someone not that tall. Took one of the marks of the carnival against SA. He is very good at reading the play in close, just one of those kids who knows where the footy will end up.

Some great results at draft camp, number 1 for agility and in the top 10 for the sprint and vertical leap. Like Farren Ray, he probably needs a little bit of time in the gym and to work on his defensive game, but he looks a pretty good prospect.

Im glad we got Surjan...but Mahoney? Please tell me its not the Josh Mahoney that played for Collingwood and Bulldogs 4 or 5 years ago that looked like a lost 5 year old in a full supermarket?

Poor pick.

Jacob Surjan - Selection no. 10 – 2003 National Pre-Season Draft

Talented young midfielder who represented Western Australia in this year’s National AFL U18 championships and was a strong performer at the Draft Camp. Was ranked no. 1 in the agility test. From: South Fremantle

Yeah it is. He played for Essendons vfl team in 2001 and 2002 and was very solid but I cant see him cracking Ports team. A handy SANFL mini draft pickup for one lucky team!

Since he's my 'buddy', I think I'm supposed to defend him...

Surjan is a great get for us, he's the goal-kicking midfielder type I'd hoped we would pick up in the National Draft.

Hereby nicknamed `Doc'
(Surjan=surgeon, also from South Fremantle)

Also wore #36 at the Bulldogs so that works out well

As for Mahoney....meh. I think I'll just pretend we only have a 38 man list this year.

You'll be pleasantly surprised and then understand why I speak so highly of Surjan when you get to see him train/play.

Looks like Port are building another massive engine room again with the pick ups this season.

You don't have to defend him because he is your buddy, you can do the complete opposite and bag the hell out of him. Im expecting Macca to do the same with Kingers and rightly so.

You guys are definently underrating Mahoney.

He was unlucky to be delisted by the Bulldogs at the end of 2000 (he played in their final that year) and his 3 years in the VFL since have been nothing short of fantastic. (I know that the VFL is a lot lower than the AFL but his form there was dead set awesome)

Williamstown will definently miss him. :(

I reckon he could slot straight in to Port's team, if there are a few injuries. The reason you picked him up would be simple - he's a ready made footballer.

If Mahoney is so great, could you answer 3 questions for me?

1. Why did Collingwood delist him?

2. Why did the Bulldogs delist him?

3. Why has he been playing for Williamstown for 3 years instead of Collingwood?

1. We did not delist him, we traded him.

2. I don't know, as I said above...he played finals that year for the Bulldogs (2000). Not many people get delisted after playing finals at the end of the year do they.

3. Williamstown for 1 year, he played for Essendon's VFL side in 2001-02.

My point is he has improved a hell of a lot from the little bloke that played in the big helmet for us in the late 90s.
