surprising stat hawthorn has never beaten collingwood in a finals match or a match where they met in a finals series.

collingwood has won all times when ever the two teams have met in a finals match eg elim final, semi, prelim and never played off in a grand final either.

collingwood bet hawthorn in the 1979 and 1980 night pre season grand final at waverly park.

amazing stat

This is still alive. It'll end up being a Legendary thread.

And by the way a surprising fact is that no one with a New Zealand heritage has won the Brownlow, Norm Smith, Leigh Matthews, AFLCA, or Gary Ayres medals. And definitely not in the same season.

Brisbane Bears started off as brown and gold but had to change to pink because the then Hawks President Eddie McGuire would not allow it.

Hawthorn were originally Royal blue and Gold but had to swap to brown and gold on joinng VFA because williamstown president Eddie McGuire would not allow it (part of this is true)

Am I missing some subtle humour here?

Tigers have a 9-8 finals record against the filth.

In 2018 they shocked the universe by snapping a 6 game finals losing streak against us, when they beat us in a final for the first time in 81 years. They won "second chance" Grand Finals against us in 1919 and 1929, which boosted their Grand Final tally against us somewhat.

Blues had a crack at doing the same in 1921 as well but hilariously just added another loss to their abysmal finals record against us, which stands at 16-6 our way. They remain the only team to have beaten us in a Grand Final since 1944, and they achieved this twice in 1972 and 1982, reversing earlier finals losses against us both times. The last time the Blues finished a finals series with more wins than losses against us? 1920. The only other time it occurred was 1916. Since their astonishing 1-0 triumph over us in 1920 where just quietly we went on to win the flag anyway, the two clubs have met in at least one final in all of the following years: 1921, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1932, 1935, 1967, 1969, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1980, 1982, and even 2001. 14 consecutive finals series without a positive win/loss ratio against us in any of them. In the 3 series in that time where honours were split, Richmond had the higher percentage across the contests. Carlton FC and their supporters absolutely hate this and in their now rare occasional moments of arrogance I find it is helpful to remind them of this little known fact.

As badly as the Blues have fared against us in finals, Geelong would kill for that finals record against us, given we have an overall finals record of 10-2 against them. In 1995 on a weird September afternoon, I proceeded to Waverley Park to witness a never before or since seen event in football. The Cats' lucky narrow umpire-sponsored victory over us that day marked the only time they have ever recorded a positive win/loss record against us in any finals series. Ever. They celebrated by losing the Grand Final the following week by ten goals to none other than Carlton. I guess one of them had to win. 😂

EDIT(2): Some more curious facts.

Tigers have won 11 of their 13 flags after meeting either Geelong or Carlton in the finals series. Four times the Tigers have won flags after beating both during the finals series.

Carlton has won 14 of their 16 flags by avoiding Richmond in the finals series.

Geelong has won 8 of its 9 flags by avoiding Richmond in the finals series.

Carlton have outscored Richmond in their contests within a finals series in 3 out of 17 finals series where they have met.

Geelong has outscored Richmond in their contests across a finals series in 1 out of 11 finals series in which they have met.

Richmond have never one a Premiership without meeting at least one of these 4 teams in the finals series: Carlton, Geelong, Essendon, North Melbourne.

After looking at all of this, and naturally hoping the Tigers make the finals in 2022, I have just one single wish: please please please please make the finals in 2022 both Geelong and Carlton. If not then either of Bombers or Roos will have to do. 😁

Edit: Just remembered to my horror the Blues did actually finally record a positive win/loss ratio against us in a finals series, in 2013, for the first time in 93 years a the 15th time of asking. But I think we can rightly exclude that one on the grounds they didn’t even qualify for the finals that season. They went on to lose to a team that lost to a team that lost the Grand Final so it was a pretty pointless win for them, aside from the enormity of snapping a streak I would estimate would have been a 1250-1 shot. I wonder how many of that infamous Blues team realised they were turning over what is likely the longest streak of finals series meetings between two teams without one of them returning a positive win/loss ratio in any single finals series. You gotta love a good underdog story, I guess this makes the Blues the Bad News Bears of the AFL. 😍

Thats all well and good mate - and im sure ( like fn hell ) you were comforting yourself as a supporter - with your good finals record - when you went through 30 years of utter hell as a supporter with very few wins

Most supporters of any team in any chosen sport - get a little bit of joy with regular - or semi regular wins - yet you had 30 years of absolutely none of that

Melbourne have got an absolute great GF record ( which shiits all over Rich GF record ) do you think the Demon supporters ( who had 50 years of hell - bar 4-5 decent years ) do you think they would be comforting themselves during that 50 year horror stretch - oh but we have got an excellent GF record

No what they would be saying - is boy id just love our team to win a game of football every now and again

In a thread devoted to surprising stats, both imagined and real, I love the shock factor of your contribution GOB. Your surprising stats are:

1. that Richmond had something of a 30 year hiatus between clusters of finals domination where they specialised in flogging the hapless Cats, and

2. the Demons had 50 years in hell - that is surprising, I thought it was supposed to be eternity. 💁 😂

Thank you for your very surprising stats GOB. 😍😍😁😁
