Sussan has just announced she is going to resign from Parliament.

She showed some class in defeat.

Not one of my favourite politicians but I wish her all the best.

Agree was a pretty gracious speech notwithstanding the fact the country is up for the cost of a by election

They never gave her a chance. Not from my side of politics, but I struggle to see what she actually did that was so bad from their point of view, or what will change now that she's gone. And with this result, they've indirectly bowed to the junior Coalition partner's wishes...again.

Nats will be wanting to reclaim her seat of Farrer, if they can withstand ON.

I would gain satisfaction from Ley outlasting Littleproud (even if just for a day)
Sad Its Over GIF by Star Wars

Tbf when has an axed former leader stayed in Parliament been good for the party?

Shorten conducted himself well I thought after losing the party leadership, off the top of my head

I wouldn’t say I exactly feel sorry for Ley, she was not a quality operator, she brought little of note to the role and her pathetic tub thumping after Bondi was frankly a disgrace.

But she was also never given much of a chance by her own party and treated abominably by even more conservative men in her own party on the one hand, and the now ON-adjacent Nats on the other.

Can’t really blame her for just retiring given all of that.

I completely forgot about Shorten. Probably says a lot about how he was

I’m no Liberal voter but Ley was treated very badly by her own party. Had they united behind her she might have been quite capable.
As to Angus Taylor, wasn’t it said late last year that he’d been given a year to produce a policy in his shadow ministry, but at the end of the 12 months he’d done SFA.

Her resigning is pure revenge driven.

Taylor at his first by-election will get hammered.

Yeah, I think behind the cheerful smiles and 'no hard feelings' from yesterday, she's ready to go scorched earth.

Pre-empting what the key findings are from the review of the disastrous 2025 election campaign are, I'd assume it's essentially "do everything you can to reclaim the centre and stop worrying about losing ground to the far right." And besides choosing Ley as the Leader, post election, I can't think of a single thing they've done since that would help them regain the metro seats they've given away to Labor and the Teals.

A moderate can no longer succeed in the Liberal Party. The takeover is well and truly complete.

I just shake my head at the people

Didin't Dutton sue to stop that review from coming out?

I'm quite happy with how "this" is turning out for the Liberals ;)

Long may it continue - I am yet to hear one person tell me anything good they have done since Howard's gun laws and the GST.

That is over 25 years since the Liberals have done anything good of note. ANYTHING.

Howards last term, Abbott's entire term, Turnbull's entire term and of course That campaigner Morrison's abomination of a term is all an open sewer of failure after failure.

Who cares who their leader is.
You look back at those leaders you mentioned....

When John Winston Howard lost to Kevin Rudd in the 2007 Federal election, it was an end of an era. Howard ruled from 1996 to 2007. He won the 1996, 1998, 2001 and 2004 elections. Howard won the 2004 elections because Mark Latham was a horrible opposition leader.

Peter Costello was treasurer. He was waiting to replace John Howard. It didn't happen .

People claimed Tony Abbott a genius. Far from it. He took advantage on the Rudd vs Gillard faction feud.

Malcolm Turnbull was .... Meh, he won the 2016 federal election.

Scott Morrison... Malcolm Turnbull was 14 years older than scomo. Well Scott Morrison did just enough to win the 2019 election against the odds. He lost easily in 2022.

Of those 4 former leaders that were former prime Ministers, would any of them come back and lead the liberals again?

John Winston Howard is 86 years old. Rule him out.

Tough Man Tony Abbott is 68 years old. Unlikely.

Malcolm Turnbull is 71 years old. Nah too old.

Scott Morrison isn't even 60. He is 57 years old to be exact. He is young enough to lead the liberals again.

Morrison is the most discredited of everyone you mentioned. The subterfuge in assuming other ministeries means no one would trust him. That's without taking into account what a useless campaigner he is... 😀

If only age mattered. Morrison is a charlatan and campaigner, he’ll never lead the liberals again

the preacher man had one gift ...... ..... maybe 2

1. he was a born again bully who could talk the hind leg off a rhinoceros
2. typical of most religious extremists - he had no shame or fear of worldly consequence

watching him squirm uncomfortably giving evidence at the robodebt RC was pure joy .... unfortunately that will be extent of any punishment this campaigner will face
