What is your understanding of what is a moderate?

Turnbull, some of the state Liberals (the ones remaining that haven’t been hijacked by the religious right like NSW), Bridget Archer, Andrew Gee; Pyne, Brandis, where Hewson and Fraser ended up.

The Teals - socially progressive but economically liberal.

They are what I’d consider to be moderates. But there’s only a handful of Libs left who could be considered “moderate”. Absolutely none of them have leadership potential and none will be able to prevent the inevitable Taylor/Hastie/Abbott removal of Ley

And to get that “moderate” list that had to include idiots like Hume who went out of her way to insult Chinese Australian voters.

Imagine bootlicking the most detestable clowns and losers in the US Senate?

I'm sure that's what the Australian public wants, Ted Cruz dictating Australian foreign policy via sycophants in the Liberal Party.

In other words, the Liberals are f****d! You beauty!!

will all her flaws, ley is attempting to bring the reactionaries back to the centre. but the rightist crazies like credlin (who thinks the party is her fiefdom) would rather wreck it than see it become more moderate.
I hope Credlin succeeds. I've heard the objection that we need a sensible right of centre party for when Labor are unpopular with the electorate, but there's no reason that has to always be the current form of the Liberals, as they've died and re-formed many times previously. The more extreme the current Liberal Party becomes, the more likely it is that they will split at some point. Then the moderates can run on a half decent platform with a real shot of governing, and the extremists can have the 10-15% of votes they truly earn, instead of being able to use the moderates to siphon more votes from people with an outdated idea of what the Liberals truly are.

Now of course the moderates could still form a coalition with the extremists to govern, but that's not a given. And if it did happen, if the moderates had more MPs they would have the whip hand in negotiations, and could put the extremists in their place on policy.

Brandis? The one who angrily defended the right of people to be bigots? Not in my mind.

odd character is brandis. just when he displays signs of having a social conscience, he reverts to type.

The same George Brandis who, when he was the Attorney General of Australia, the highest law officer in the country said people have a "right to be bigots"? That George Brandis?

He is a 4 letter word as are most of the Liberal Party.

He did stand up in parliament and take down Hanson over her Burka stunt in a real passionate speech. All other actions aside I respect him for that, as I’m sure he would have copped some internal criticism for speaking against her from his own party.

Look at the video. At the end of the speech it seems all the applause is coming from the Greens and Labor on the other side, I count 3 LNP Senators making weak ass hand claps, the rest are stationary:

Wouldn’t happen today. Ley would bluster and fumble and eventually put out an incredibly weak statement 3 weeks later. Hastie would be thinking ‘how can I take her message and make it more of a dogwhistle?”

Not much longer:

The minister for screeching is shifting in her chair very uncomfortably after that speech. You'd almost be forgiven for thinking she supports Hanson's stunt and strongly disagrees with George.

Probably. Cash is one Hastie’s biggest backers and has pushed a lot of populist right content.

Ley's not exactly helping herself but she's getting the same treatment as Gillard got and I feel a bit sorry for her. There's a bunch of people in the party and the media that think she's squatting in a job that rightfully belongs to someone like Andrew Hastie and they aren't shy about letting people know.

Weird comparison. Gillard was the one who stole the leadership from rudd. Sure she wasnt on the outerbench openly attacking the leader like hastie. She was more the morrison sitting on the side until turnball fell on his sword.

I think that's being quite kind to her. She rose to power under the guise of trying to reinvent/save the Liberal party and has done exactly SFA in that regard. Granted, not all of it is her fault, but she is showing very little in the way of leadership or offering anything other than "Dutton Lite".

I'm sure some of the commentary is personal, but I don't think she's being unfairly treated overall.
