The day after the 2001 draft i was talking to 1 of the 2 main recruiting guys for Essendon'. He was pissed.

If you can recall that was Sheedy & Jackson at the table (no recruiting staff). Sheedy overuled all good advice and went Brent Harvey's brother, Shane at pick 18. My mate said, aside from the big 3...Swan was the pick of the whole draft. He was devastated. His advice , no question, take Swan first pick. Essendon had 5 picks before 56.

Swan went pick 58. (aside: Medhurst pick 56).

My mate knew his stuff huh.

PS the top 3 was Hodge Ball Judd.

Well we took Richard Cole, who Essendon got eventually anyway. So not like the Pies recruiters were geniuses. Also took Tom Davidson and Mark McGough. Scott Cummings in the PSD. Thank god we took a punt on Swan.

Yes Brent..edited. ty

Ball was also pick 2...who we have :)

That was the best draft ever.....2008 (Sidebottom, Beams, Blight, Rounds)
draft may prove to be the making of us in hindsight (al la Geelong 2001 Bartel, Kelly No 17, Johnson, Ablett f/s).

Shane Harvey though did have alot of off field problems when playing in the AFL ie. alcohol. Never quite reached his full potential i dont think.

Swanny at pick 58 is a dead set bargain. Better than going to Dimmie's.

Well the first 2 are already in our best 22 & Blight & Rounds were underage draftees so in effect you can say this is their first year. Both looking like they will be AFL footballers. So yeah it's quite possible we may look back in a few years and be quietly smug about that draft.

So the day after the draft, you talked to him. Sometime in late 2001, then.
4 years later you start a bf account.
4 1/2 years after that, you start these threads.

After both clubs have completely changed their recruiting set-ups.
My question is... why start this thread, now???
To prove Judkins was right? Could have told you that in about 2003. To prove Sheedy was wrong? Again, could have told you that by about 2005. To prove we had a messed off-field set-up??? Yep, coulda told you that, too.

Ease up buddy, I think he was just pointing out how far Swan has come since the draft. Also the fact the he (as we all are) is glad Essendon didn't listen to his mate and he got through to us.

A late pick, given no REAL chance to make it, and has improved, got his shit together and now is one of the best players going around.

Also I think he is saying he is glad we stuck with him and gave him the opportunity, just take a back seat mate and chill out.

wtf are you doing here? If you don't like it **** off.

Also, know someone that watched the Harvey brothers as juniors and she always said that Shane would be better than Brent. Turns out that didn't happen but it showed that maybe somewhere along the way he might have made the wrong decision.
