When was their last flag - and when was the last time they threatened.

Oh 1996 - were never going to win in Melbourne.

Gee, they are the genuine sympathy case of the competition - all the concessions under the sun but still the ultimate success eludes them.

You know why - losers culture.

Winners come from melbourne or Pert or Adelaide, where there is real passion, real belief.

Not just fickle support from a town that has no real pasion for sport.

So I guess there is noe need to bag them.

Cheers

Well if it is such a wonderful city and sport is mundane to you, shouldn't you:

1. Be outside taking in the sights of such a wonderful place.

&

2. Spend less time here considering sport to you is so mundane.

Quite the paradox one would have to admit yes?

You possess great insight into the personality of Sydneysiders
rolleyes.gif

So, that's the reason why the Swans have only made the finals four of the last five seasons and failed to claim the flag, it's because we're a bunch of losers, not the team, the people of Sydney. Great logic, you must be a real brain

By the way, the Olympics held up here went along OK for a bunch of losers hosting them

Don't knock Sydney too much Kymmie, your mob could well be more regularly playing up here soon!

Cheers for the fascinating post Kim,

Ben

yeah thanks khm

1) I am - going body surfing at Bronte this afternoon and if ever you are in Sydney please feel free to join my wife and I onboard her boat for nice harbour cruise, followed by lunch at Watson's Bay and then enjoy another sparkling winters afternoon at the SCG watching the Swans come from behind to beat the Kangaroos. Oh and by the way as I type this I can see a HUGE cruise liner coming in through the heads - magnificent khm, thats all I can say mate ...

2) I didn't say sport is mundane to me, I said that it can SEEM a little mundane at times to lots of Sydneysiders - not me - as you say why would I be here if I thought that ? As for passionate support - well I would challenge any Southerner to prove to me that I am not passionate about my footy, but there is a limit to passion, as Jerry Seinfeld once said :

"you didn't win, they won, you watched"

cheers

BSA....my room is booked and I'll be up there for North vs Sydney in 2001. Twice. Not too sure about the prospects of the Swans beating the Roos though, but I'm sure any pain you'll feel will be numbed by sharing a bottle of wine or two with your's truly.

sydney fan

i know how depressed you must feel supporting a club thats going backwards fast.

but let me remind you, this is a "footy" forum.

so if you have got something to say regarding football, SAY IT!

otherwise get back in your sand box little man!

Good comeback Iron Mike
I wonder where you got the idea of the sand box, sounds kind of similar to Matchbox cars mate!

I don't believe the Swans are moving backwards and even if they are I don't care too much (as long as they are competitive), I'll still support them nevertheless!

And for the people who think that all Sydney supporters are fickle bandwagoners, in the Swans magazine I recently received the CEO, Kelvin Templeton said he was delighted with the renewals of Swans memberships with there looking to be as many if not more Swans members in 2001 than 2000. The Swans membership is highly sort after in Sydney because it's very difficult to get decent seats at the SCG without a membership therefore very few withdraw their membership.

Just to add to that

A work colleague has just been informed that she will have to spend another year on the waiting list before she gets offered a membership. Apparently the club is OVER SUBSCRIBED again this year.

This is most encouraging and a huge kick in the guts for all those (mostly Southerners) critics who have written off support for the Swans as being soft, fickle or a bandwagon.

It also compares starkly with the situation we had in Sydney during the 80's when as soon as the Swans started to lose, support would fall away dramatically.

The Swans and those of us who support them have come a long way since those days.

cheers

Cheers for that point BSA

It annoys when people constantly describe Swans supporters as fickle, who will desert the Swans in droves once they start to lose games. I think a lot of people in other States don't realise how many people support the Swans.

Sure most people in Sydney aren't passionate supporters of the Swans but there is a fairly strong base of hard-core supporters. I remember there was a poll in Sydney a few years back (around 1997) which stated that 800,000 Sydneysiders had a reasonable interest in Australian Football. A decent assumption would be that at least 100,000 to 150,000 of these 800,000 Australian Football supporters in Sydney would be keen Swans supporters. A 100,000 to 150,000 number of keen supporters is not bad at all a base for a team to build on, adding that in successful seasons this figure is inflated by the people who love success or the theatre-goers.

I agree that the History of the Swans since they moved to Sydney has had its less-than-flattering moments, and without doubt if weren't for the financial support of the AFL, the club would of gone under. But that's the past and you can't change it, and the Swans are now in a very healthy position, on-field and most importantly off-field.

Cheers,

Ben

I would not have described Swans supporters as fickle, but it appears (from afar) that many of them view a day or night at the football as more of a social event, than tribal support of their team. That being the case, if the weather and the harbour beckon, then they may opt for that rather than the footy. I guess that means that many of them are less avid than supporters in Vic or SA, but not necessarily fickle.

Fair enough CiK - a fair call

But whilst I would be prepared to concede we have our fair share of 'Theatre Goers' what club dosn't for heaven's sake ?

There would be many 1000's of people in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth who would go to the footy more for entertainment and / or a social outing rather than to barrack for their team. Whats the difference between those people and the people who live in Sydney and do exactly the same thing ?

Our membership is CAPPED at 26,000 in Sydney and 5000 in Melbourne. If we wanted to we could fill the entire SCG with members only - thats 42,000 - easily - and the the terraces at the SCG would be full to capacity just like Footy Park and Subiaco look every week, but we don't because we actually like to encourage theatre-going from the general Sydney population, thats why a third of the SGg is available to walk-ups and phone-bookers every week.

Also I would like to say that our core support is as strong and as 'tribal' as any other clubs. These fans will turn out rain hail or shine, win or lose, week in week out. Just because we are not Victorians does not mean we don't know how to support outr footy club !

cheers

I think you have a greater percentage of "theatre-goers" than other clubs, and they are more evident in the home & away games. At finals time, Melbourne has many more, and I would suggest that up to 50% of the people at the GF are there for the "occasion" rather than to support a team. No doubt you have your "tribal" supporters too, I just think Melbourne clubs probably have a greater percentage of them. In time, that may change.

A reasoned and informed response - you have to be a fellow Kangaroo.

It is a dfferent ulture in Sydney, having lived there for a number f months and attending most weeks.

The tribal call is fair and just, and my opinion on that would be that many fans did not grow up with the game, therefore may not quite understand the nuances of the game to the degree that those who have lived, breathed and eaten it since they were born.

And apranetly we dont hav as much to do in our tiny, backward little community in Melbourne.
