They need to get a hurry up if the core of this group is going to win another flag.

Franklin, Grundy, Jack, Kennedy, Smith, Tippet & McVeigh are all getting on.

I think they'll only get one more crack. A rebuild is looming.

They have the best list in the comp, arguably the most unique home ground advantage that supports their game plan, old remnants of a COLA
advantage in their list, a huge academy leg up in the most populated state and a captured market in the biggest economy.

Not about to go away.

None of this explains last nights capitulation. The theatre of footy lives on.

They won't win one with this group now. 4 years they've failed since recruiting Franklin. They're not up to it with some of those players. Big games they go missing. Parker & Rohan particularly.

Sydney are completely mentally broken after 2014 and 2016.

Horse is beaten too many times in the coaches box. He's not an elite coach. He's a one trick pony with the privilege of coaching an elite list who has coughed up two golden opportunities.

Parker, Rohan, Jack etc. go missing far too often in big games.
Exactly this. Clarko would have half a dozen flags with the Swans lists over the years.

Sydney has arguably one of the most talented lists in the competition. But year after year they look second rate come finals time.
See I'm not sure if this is true. Like a lot of Sydney teams recently, they seem to be more than the sum of their parts. They have superstars like Buddy, but they also seem to have a lot of honest foot soldiers as well. Their midfield has plenty of uncompromising grunt, but not a great deal of pure outside run and flair. Everyone knows and plays their role, but if just a couple of players are off their game (e.g. Rohan in finals), it seems to fall apart for them as they don't have the pure silky talent to cover.

I think they're a workmanlike team on paper, that Longmire has done very well to mould into a consistent premiership-challenging outfit. (IMHO anyway)

The AFL won't allow it.

I'm not referring to a root and branch rebuild. They have a reasonably good group in the 20-25 age category.

A couple of KPP's are going to be required. Grundy, Franklin, Jack, Kennedy, McVeigh, Smith and Tippet are all entering the twilight. Is Hannaberry's best footy behind him? Lot's of good players need to be replaced.

Ok from the thread I took that longmire only gets a game cause he is a great athlete however struggles in finals, Rohan while a great coach in home n away doesn't have the game plan for September and the swans once again went missing when it counted.
Am I close?

I was surprised how poor their midfield was last night
I wasnt surprised how slow they were. Too many plodders. When Kieren Jack returned to form and was getting games I didnt think they had any improvement left. He actually played ok last night but it meant they ran with the same midfield that has failed in the big ones.

It's an interesting one ....

firstly scott needs to pay Clarkson
Royalties for lifting his game plan.

That game plan is the only thing that has
Beaten Sydney in 18 weeks
( three times )

The 3 losses have all been night games with A wet or greasy ball .
( coupled with the game plan this greatly reduces the swans big strength ...
Quick transitions)

All 3 loses have come with the Swans
Murdering teams for soft wins in the preceding weeks.

It's nearly like they are victims of their
Own success ..... they look so good in murdering inferior teams in conditions that
Suit .... however ..... it softens them up
When up against it and Horse unfortunately Has no plan b

They have been rebuilding...
It's not their fault they make finals while doing so....

Have they underachieved the past 5 years?
I don't think so. A flag in that time would have been a great result, but to say Sydney has underachieved by not winning a flag in 5 years discredits how much effort and application the other 17 sides put in to winning the flag.

Every season there are 3-6 sides with the right list strength and playing style to be in the mix. Sydney doesn't have the best list in the comp, and during this time span they were hampered by the trade ban. A few seemingly good rookie draft selections during that time has masked the problems.

2016 is the year Sydney most obviously could have done better, but alas the fairytale was too strong a force to stop.

Which ever team lost last night they're coach was always going to be in the gun in social media.

People say they get Mills and heeney on the cheap plus cola in Franklin all not fair
But there rookies in Rampe paps and Newman etc have been great picks for them.

Would be nice if we could have an academy in a traditional football state like the Eagles. Alas, we only get Northern NSW and North Sydney.

Thank Christ for Newman, Melican, Papley, Jones, Mills, Heeney, and Hewett.

Have they underachieved the past 5 years?
I think so. They get an arm chair ride into the finals each year and with all the other AFL perks, one flag in 10 years is a huge under-achievement.

Staggered how much Parker has deteriorated as a player over the past two years.

How Rohan still gets a game on potential surprises.
