If Melican, Hamling, Mccartin and Rampe all fit who plays ? I don't think Hamling should go out.

I still prefer Mccartin back, but that's me .
I am a big fan of Joel staying. He has a really good temperament. He is a very good mark and a great spoil. He is also mobile. He is shorter, at 193 but ok for mine

On replay I can see how Papley did get votes sort of get it and that’s despite him being dumb and jumping into packs all the time
He did a few good things, a great tackle and was up and about more than previous weeks, but on impact toward getting a win, nowhere near votes.

My only thing would be watch the game as a whole again he’s a mile better on replay. He would not be in my votes but I get it borderline

Hamling would go out. Harsh because he played very well, but the others all have the runs on the board.

I think Cox will use Tommy Mac at both ends of the ground, depending on what he sees the need of the week is.
I doubt Hamling will go out. Rampe would go before him on form. Move Ollie out of the backs. Put him to wing/mid/forward same as Errol. After all Errol doesn't come back until after the mid season bye

Hamling is a premiership defender so has a few runs…..Florent is most at risk, along with C Warner. Blakey is the. Interesting one, even Bice could find himself on a wing.

The back six, or eight, are starting to take shape. I think there will be a lot of dependence on who we play as to who is in or out. Melican does not have a solid record w soft tissue returns being quick so he may even be extended on the injury front.

I thought Grundy was fine. He was up against, arguably, the second best ruck in the AFL
I’ve got a different take on Jackson, as a pure tap ruck he’s in the middle road of the comp so I didn’t really rate Grundys game.
Gawn, Xerri, Witts, TDK, Big 0, Nank, Marshall, Briggs a few I think are better in the ruck contest.

Chad Warners reaction after the game bouncing and jumping on Cox- suggests to me he is going to ride (it in Sydney) it long term.(mind the pun)

Hello, first time poster here. Anyone willing to shed some light on something that’s been bothering me for a while?

Campbell is an elite kick. But he’s always seemed to be a player that is lacking in confidence. As a result, I’ve often wondered why his coaches/teammates don’t instruct/look to get the ball in his hands as often as possible. Surely they know from training with the guy that his left foot is lethal.

Yes, he’s going to make mistakes as he’s building his self-belief. But I’m constantly perplexed as to why he is ignored so often. In today’s game Amartey had the opportunity to pass to a free Campbell on the run. He would have had a shot from 50m on the run. He has the talent to nail that 9 times out of 10.

He had a similar opportunity on the run from approx 50m which he blundered/turned over because he seemed to be in two minds about taking a shot or passing the ball off. In that situation, surely he should take the responsibility of having the shot. And surely his coaches and teammates should encourage him to do so. Instead, Hayward turned around and gave him a spray for not pinpointing him on a short lead. The directive should be to take the god damn shot! We believe in you!

In summary, his game today was pleasing, and he seems to be building in confidence. But I still can’t help but feel they are wasting so much of his talent.
Great first post!

I remember when Campbell started his career we were playing him off halfback and couldn’t the ball in his hands enough. Oppositions quickly worked out they had to shut him down and that dried up.

You are right that it is unusual that we pass up opportunities when he is free on half forward. I think the coaches need to make sure the players prioritise the teammate in the best position. Campbell also needs to work on his presence and demand the ball, so he makes it harder for teammates to overlook him.

Hopefully his presence gets larger as his confidence continues to grow.

I hate the spin that we somehow stole a win at the last minute. It didn't feel like that at all. It actually felt like we were the team on top for most of the day and that Freo were the ones who were just holding on, because even though they had the lead, we kept having opportunity after opportunity to take the lead and then pull away. We just kept wasting our chances. If they gave us enough we were bound to take our chance eventually, and they did, and we did, and we won.
I agree. After quarter time we were on top. They had more 50 entries because they had so many in the first quarter. We were not even in the game in the first. I think they had over 20 entries by quarter time. They ended up 10 more entries so we beat them by 10 for the rest of the game. But it is more time spent forward of centre and in forward 50 and in the last two quarters we spent far more time in there. I always thought they were protecting the lead and we were stuffing our advantage up.

Speaking of presence, McLean needs to get better at pressuring umpires for frees.

He raises his hands when hard done by, but more in the sense of having a whinge. He needs to develop that Buddy Franklin / Shane Warne sense of disbelief when the free doesn’t come, so the umpire feels like they must be an idiot for missing something obvious - then the next time the free is more forthcoming.

Hayward had a good 2024 , so let's not pretend he is complete horse shit
We know what he can do. That is why this is so upsetting. I think he could go even further than he did last year. He has the ability to take the AFL by storm but is just not doing anything. He actually looks uncoordinated. He looks slow. This is not our WILBUR

Ramps has been solid this year, dealt with Amiss pretty easily yesterday.

I don’t see why all four can’t be in the same team, Rampe takes a mid/small/new kid and bully them and then frees him, Blakey and bice up to use their left pegs a bit more..
Rampe has one problem. He ALWAYS kick long. The opposition know this and they set up for it. He is so predictable I am starting to think he can't kick a pass. He could last year, he rarely does a pass but last year he did more passes than in his whole career, but this year, NO.

Early call, but assuming no players return from injury for North (have a few on 2-3 weeks but shouldn't take chances)...

Out: Ladhams, Sheldrick
In: Cleary, Mitchell (sub)

Hayward, Florent on notice with players about to return.

VFL is next day, also in Melbourne, so I'd give Mitchell a go as sub despite not getting any gametime this weekend.

By the way, that kick backwards with 10 seconds left; how desperate were the umpires in calling that not 15 / play on? Two of them yelled it a couple of times, haha. No prizes for guessing why...
Heeney stuffed that up. He just had to keep his feet. It was not that bad but he lost balance completely. You let the ball git your shins and then pounce on the ball. He chose to try to mark a very iffy ball instead of taking the careful approach. In other words, the ball is low, put the body in front of it and follow up. Do not dive to mark. The dive to mark is Hollywood hurt and it nearly hurt us dreadfully
