SYDNEY SWANS CONFIRM COVID CASES
The Sydney Swans can confirm some members of the football department, including players, have tested positive for Covid-19 during their leave period.

All affected players and staff are double vaccinated and all report to be in good health.

The Club’s primary concern is for the health and safety of all players, staff and their families.

All positive cases are adhering to relevant State Government health directives.

All members of the football program returned negative covid tests before their final training session of the year on Wednesday, December 15, in line with AFL protocols that includes weekly PCR testing, as well as regular rapid antigen testing.

Football department staff and players are due to return from leave on Thursday January 6, 2022.

Weren't they all on that boat thing? I seem to recall seeing nearly every Swans player in posts about it on social media. Worth noting that the Swans statement said "some members of the football department, including players, have tested positive...", implying some members of the staff may have also been caught up in it. I'm not sure if there were any staff members at the boat event, but there were definitely some at the Doozy launch, so that could be it.

In any case, trying to find the source of the outbreak among the players is pretty irrelevant. They were in a state that recorded over 3,000 cases yesterday. If they didn't get it at a group outing on a boat or rooftop bar, they just as easily could've got it buying milk from the supermarket. This is just what "living with COVID" looks like now.

What are the rules around testing while travelling interstate? If you were going from Sydney to Melbourne, or Sydney to Adelaide, do you need a negative COVID test? If so, I would've thought that would rule out any of the boys who have gone back to their home states (like Amartey and McInerney, as recent social media suggests...) as being the positive cases.

You'd assume elite athletes will be ok in the short term. Big risk is post-viral fatigue, not dissimilar to glandular fever. It's no joke and so-called "long COVID" seems to fit the bill. Having been there, wouldn't wish it on anyone. Truly awful, in a life changing way, should you get unlucky.

Fingers crossed vaccination, general health and a bit of luck all play their part in ensuring the illness is mild and they experience no lingering effects.

Losing your sense or smell or your taste buds especially would be miserable if it was long lasting

I'll be on the kale diet if I cant taste anything anyway :p

Literally not 'at worst', but I get your point.

Was bound to happen and will continue to happen, the NBA has been a shambles for the last 2 weeks with nearly entire teams getting it all at once and having to isolate. AFL will have the same thing happen sooner rather than later.

It's still important to care about COVID for now, complete apathy is useless.
They are elite athletes.

Elite.

Young and literally the fittest .0000001% of the population. Literally the .00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of the FITTEST and HEALTHIEST people that have ever lived on the planet with 24/7 medical support and programs designed to make them even fitter.

Yeh - it is at worst.

Number of Xi virus strain people even though we have to call it Omicron that have died in the world is less than 2.

Less than 2. In the WORLD.

FFS at worst it is a bad cold if you are vaccinated OR and I repeat OR are healthy.

If you are not elderly or are sick with underlying conditions you are fine as you with most things. If you are elderly with health issues then everything is a crap shoot.

That is the science full stop.

FULL ******* STOP.

Panic porn born of control freak dreams has to stop.

I am not angry at you. I am angry at every single pollie in the world and "expert" who have f’ed this up from the start. Be serious - masks are useless. See the Bangladesh study. Lockdowns are useless. Everything is useless except vaccination and proper hygiene.

Seriously - we are 2 years into slowing the curve. If it didn't work before what in the hell makes anyone think that "this time" the same thing will work?

I have a deal for the Doctors and "health care professionals". Let's do exactly what these experts want and shut society. But when it doesn't work I get to destroy their life, livelihood and make it impossible for them to live a normal life forever. For their family as well. I get to to destroy them because you damn well f’ed up son.

Seems fair - I have friends who have had their lives and families destroyed from their expert advice. fu** them. fu** them all.

I have another deal - let us treat everyone who gets it free - as long as you are vaccinated. Stay unvaxxed if you want but you pay if you get sick. I am quite happy with that.

And as Ticky009 wants it kept to Swans stuff I am happy the kids got it. They now have natural immunity and will be fine. We will all get it. And guess what. We will be for the vast, vast majority be fine.

I know of a young adult with no underlying major health issues that ended up with myocarditis following infection, who could have ended up going into cardiac arrest if they had sought treatment as soon as they did.

Yes, incidents like this are rare. But they happen. The likelihood is incredibly slim and the odds of any of such a thing happening to any of our players are next to none, but let's not pretend the virus isn't dangerous and can't have serious consequences for younger people without underlying health issues.

A South African study is supposing that Omicron has an 80% lower risk of being admitted to hospital, but if you are admitted to hospital it is as dangerous as Delta in terms of life/death and long term health.

Basically sounds like it can cause the same amount of damage but at a much much lower success rate.

Need more data from other countries to confirm this but this is great news if the virus is less virulent topped off with high vaccination rates.

Seems like the ideal variant to let rip, so to speak.

Too early to be certain. We're getting a lot of information very rapidly but it will still be years before we fully understand this virus. Every year we need a new flu vaccine because of mutations and flu is less virulent and less nasty than COVID.
It's amazing how fast we have come up with effective vaccines but we need to vaccinate the whole world to restrict the multiplication of new strains.

Gotta say I'm not a massive fan of a few of the boys taking the piss out of catching COVID on social media.

Haven't seen the posts in question, but I'd probably give them a pass. Pretty sh*t time to have caught it, so good that they can have a laugh.

I have a few mates that have it or that are in quarantine at the moment that are able to have a laugh, but doesn't necessarily take the severity away from the situation. And I've joked to some of them that "at least it's not man flu".

I do get your point though, in that they're in a very lucky position where catching COVID won't be really harmfully disruptive to their lives as it would be for less unfortunate people. But unfortunately, that's pretty much the same when it comes to any sickness - it will tend to inevitably be a greater setback to a poorer person's wellbeing if they can't work, or lack the means to support themselves.
