Swans furious with St Kilda; kick saints out of pride game

There shouldn't even be a pride game. It's rubbish and unnecessary and no one cares about it. People stopped caring about other people's sexuality years ago. People coming out as gay is not even a thing that garners attention anymore. Scrap it.

There are around 700 players on an AFL list right now. Not a single current player has come out as gay. Do you think there are just no gay players or do you think it’s entirely possible a current player doesn’t feel comfortable coming out?

Thats why we still need pride. Because while you might not care, and a lot of Australians don’t care, that’s not true for everyone. And until everyone accepts it, these games and events are important to the community.

Everyone's Peter Tatchell when it comes to gay rights in Islamic countries, it's just so easy.

The Swans have a well established LGBTQIA+ supporter group and consulted them on this.

The Rainbow Swans came back with a strong view its hard for the club to ignore them after that.

This could all be avoided if Collard hadn't said that horrible word the first time, which he admits to.

The club will lose access to 1 of its 8 different jumpers that they can flog to supporters. That's about it.

Very brave of the Qatar Airways Swans.
Nah, you've been replaced by the Bulldogs in Round 17

It emerged on Wednesday night that the Sydney-St Kilda clash in Round 13 wouldn’t be the Swans’ Pride Game for this year, with the Swans-Bulldogs clash in Round 17 now the designated match to help the club celebrate and support LGBTIQA+ communities.

I think general consensus is that people who identify as homosexual alone is 1-3%, probably more with younger blokes but if we average it at 2% of 700 players there should be around 14 gay players currently on a list.

Calling it cancellation is a bit woke isn’t it.

He was being punished for breaking afl rules. No need to be dramatic.

The swans obviously regard the position St Kilda put forward as a disgrace. Which I don’t necessarily have a problem with.
You never really surprise!

Yes that's what I meant, we sold Pride merch too.

If you don't want your private life commented on by strangers, then don't let strangers into your private life.
Whilst there's some truth to that IMO, I find the bigger issue with social media is that people take the time and effort to actually post commentary about someone else's provide life.

It's just so wierd to me.

The Bulldogs who have named their home ground after a bloke who features in a horribly homophobic rant easily available online.

Still, every club will have something or other, we live in a society that's still very homophobic in parts.

Dogs should make a good fist of it.

Why would they come out as gay? Most people don’t go around publicly advertising personal details about themselves. This isn’t Hollywood. It’s no one’s business. 99% of people don’t advertise their sexuality because it’s not something that normal people advertise . No we don’t need this “pride” virtual signal at all because in a tolerant western country like ours, everyone who can agree already does agree. You will never change the minds of the few who don’t agree, hence it’s a complete waste of time.

Do it in Afghanistan or somewhere where it matters. It’s a complete useless virtue signal doing it in Australia looking for a complete utopia that will never happen. The battle has already been won here, to the extent that it’s impossible ever to get 100%.

For the few people that don’t agree, explain to me how having this match is going to change that persons mind? How? What is the trigger that this match existence will pull to change the mind of that person?

It’s a complete waste of time that will not convert a single person who doesn’t already agree.

Sure- so how many afl players have come out then?

It's possible but not sure that universal averages work for a discrete community like AFL. For example, I'm not sure what the averages are for homosexual women, but I'm guessing that the number of gay AFLW players is well in excess of that average.

Pendles may have a couple spare next week if you need them :p
There'll be plenty of straight pride in the lead up to that game, Pendles and his missus and kids splashed all over the media with stories of how they've supported him over the years. But some would just call that attention seeking I guess.

Why would they?

Think about it logically.

If a straight player unintentionally advertises their sexuality by going out for dinner in public setting with their wife, they know no one will make a big deal about it.

If a gay player goes out with a male partner, then it becomes a public story. A good new story, yes. There’ll be the whole “good on both of them” and “so brave” and all of that stuff, and it will be framed as a positive tolerant news story and everyone will be happy for them.

That all might be well and good, but why would the player want to go through that attention? Would you want that attention? Most people are private and don’t want their private life slapped on the front page of the paper, even if it’s a positive story. It’s no one’s business. That’s why people don’t come out. Why would they? You don’t need to know if he’s gay - it’s none of your business.

Some would but that would say more about the some, rather than him or his family.

Though this isn't the forum for this right now :thumbsu:

The match isnt for those opposing people for who they are.

Its for the ones battling inner thoughts and conflictions in their mind about who they are due to societies views.

This creates a space of acceptance.

Just like the Mardi Gras is about honouring those that paved the way for acceptance. Sometimes its kinder to look at the subject matter a bit deeper than surface level. If its not impacting you, then thats ok too. It doesnt have to be something for you or everyone.

Dude, wasn't it only about 5 years ago or something that it wasn't legal for gay people to be married in Australia?

I definitely agree that Australia is much better than plenty of other parts of the world in regards to this stuff, and we've also improved significantly over time - but I don't think we can pretend that the job is done.

If you do it among family and friend definitely not.

If you plaster it all over social media, most definitely.
There goes red carpet Brownlow night…

Look everyone I’m heterosexual and dating!
