Swans furious with St Kilda; kick saints out of pride game

Maybe, if Pride in sport groups felt strongly about it, but they clearly don’t. They feel strongly about this situation, but hey, what would they know about homophobia?

News corp has historically been a strong enemy of LGBTQ people.

Talk is cheap and easy.

But they aint giving up the sponsorship money.

I think this is a knee jerk decision from the Sawns and made in haste. I think what would have been preferred would be to retain the Saints and use the Collard case to shine a strong light on how ‘we’ can be better and use the Saints / Collard as the perfect partner to demonstrate how doing things better is the way to handle this.

Easy thing is ditch the Saints. The weak way out imo.

Keep the Saints, both clubs commit to recognising the incident as a moment to grow from and use as constructively as possible.

The Swans have a well established LGBTQIA+ supporter group and consulted them on this.

The Rainbow Swans came back with a strong view its hard for the club to ignore them after that.

This could all be avoided if Collard hadn't said that horrible word the first time, which he admits to.
You might want to actually be aware of the case
Collard has at all times maintained his innocence

and FWIW, it was the Saints that initiated the Pride game, a St Kilda initiative
I agree it is sad for Saints supporters. Reminds me of when my club was up on the stand for allegations of racism.

I agree that every club would stand by Collard in that same scenario, but I think reading between the lines of the appeal outcome, it was likely St Kilda’s lawyers who submitted that homophobic language was commonplace in football, and they also publicly thanked the appeals board in the wake of the horrendous statements from the chairman. The Saints should have been more circumspect about what a reprieve for Collard would mean after he was found guilty.

Ultimately this shouldn’t be directed at St Kilda, it’s a little wake up call for 17 other clubs: people actually care about this issue, and publicly paying lip service to change while you privately uphold the status quo is not good enough.
I think you are adding 4+9 and getting 27, we know that the appeals board said that, not that St Kilda made that a part of their submission.
I'm not sure where the anger at St Kilda is coming from; we were fighting against a 10-week suspension. It's the AFL that made an utter mess of this, trying to grandstand the issue.

I agree the pride game has it's place, football still isn't seen as a place welcoming to all.

I strongly feel that this action is based on other reasons, though

Why should we bother improving our society while there are other countries with bigger problems (wars, starving children etc)?

Compelling argument.

Improve what? When someone comes out in Australia they are celebrated. Western countries like ours are among the most tolerant countries on earth. How in the hell is having a "pride" round going to achieve one thing? Anyone who doesn't agree isn't going to change their mind because Sydney have some rainbow colours on the jumper. It's idiotic.

The thing that pisses me off the most is that it has the OPPOSITE affect. We don't need or want people drawing attention to pride round, because we want to ignore people's sexuality (and I mean that in a good way) so that no one talks about or even cares. We've gone so far with our "tolerance" that it has instead become all about the corporations and some individuals telling everyone how tolerant they are, which actually PREVENTS athletes coming out because all it does is ensure that athlete will be on the front page of the paper, ignoring their privacy while the adoring media and public celebrate them, which makes them feel awkward

Here's what I want is when any athlete comes out:

- I want no one to post about it on social media.
  • I want no one to care
  • I want no one write an article about it
  • I want no one to start a bigfooty thread.

I'm sure you want that too. We all do. Having a pride round prevents all of the above. It's useless. Scrap it. No one likes it. Piss it off completely.

The moment you align your arguments with causes that LGBT groups care about, people will listen to you on this topic. Until then you're clearly searching for every possible excuse to avoid doing that.

If you genuinely care about the LGBT+ community, then you could start by listening to them. So long as you profess to already know everything on the subject while saying the exact opposite of LGBT+ groups are campaigning for, you're no kind of ally at all.

If you want to understand things more, just do some reading.

'If we can capture the attention of the average punter, by drawing on an understood, shared love of sport and team-based values, it will reduce the space between ‘us and them’, and ultimately result in more welcoming environments and higher LGBTI+ participation.'- Holly Ransom, Pride Cup Chair

Ted Whitten stuff about Sandy Roberts. Among others. Its all there.
Just went through it, Jesus Christ. Isn't this man meant to be one of the most respected figures in all the history and culture of Victoria and like practically among the top 3 annointed saints of VFL/AFL lore?

St Kilda argued during the tribunal hearing that Collard was innocent, but their arguments during the appeal were based around diminishing the seriousness of the offence. They underestimated the amount people cared about their response.

What other reasons could the Rainbow Swans possibly have for making complaints, and demanding this reccomendation? It's truly tin-foil hat time if you believe this is some kind of nothern academies tit-for-tat.

What happened between them? I searched and couldn't find anything

There shouldn't even be a pride game. It's rubbish and unnecessary and no one cares about it. People stopped caring about other people's sexuality years ago. People coming out as gay is not even a thing that garners attention anymore. Scrap it.
What planet do you live on because it surely ain't this one.

There is no "us and them" You're making an assumption that isn't true. No one cares about people's sexuality and we sure as hell don't need to draw attention to it, like they are some sort of circus act. People despise this virtue signalling crap. It actually does more harm than good.

So we can’t fight against homophobia because it doesn’t exist in our society. Brilliant, Dan.

My post said this:

I know he maintains his innocence on the second more recent charge.

But he does admit he used it the first time he was charged with homophobic abuse in 2024

"I am incredibly remorseful for my comments and any hurt they may have caused," Collard said

"I'm disappointed in myself and fully accept the consequences for my behaviour.

"What I did doesn't represent my values, or the values of the club. I have apologised to the Williamstown players who were impacted by my behaviour, and unreservedly reiterate that apology to anyone else my conduct affected."

His being an alleged repeat offender appears to be the key problem.

The Swans didn't cancel the 2025 Pride game after Collard's first game.

That's bullshit mate, it wasn't ten years ago that everyone got to care, a lot, about people's sexuality and were given a loudspeaker to voice their opinions. You say you don't care but you've tried to make that clear so often that I'm starting to think you do.

The good ole "I know what you really think"

It's the classic passive aggressive tactic used when anyone dares not comply.

Some people do, but most people don't.

What a load of absolute rot.

Anyway, it's all blowing hot air. The Pride stuff is here to stay, whether some outdated boomers like it or not.
