yeah....while j mcveigh makes at least one shocker a quarter and i cop it for getting on his case

as for ablett, naming him in the leadership group is a mark of respect, but with it comes a certain expectation that he has to keep stepping up....
as for captaincy, he still has to earn a definite place in the senior 18 (or 22), which is linked to what i said about expectation
i personally don't think he'll ever be a captain, but what love to be proved wrong as a i like the bloke

I'm not sure he'll be captain, as I think Malceski is a better option, but I still have faith in Luke Ablett and Jarrad McVeigh for that matter.

At least Ablett goes hard for the ball, you can't fault him that. He has shown real leadership to me, by staying at the Swans and sticking by us. He could have easily taken Nathan's route and gone home or play for a Victorian club to be closer to his family. That in itself is leadership in my opinion. :thumbsu:

i am right with you on malch, he's been captaincy material since his debut....and ablett is definitely hard at it....if you look at the last 5 mins of our win over geelong in the nick davis semi-final in 05, ablett does 2 or 3 crucial things to get us the ball, without them we would never have been in a winning position....
mcveigh...mcblah

lol I don't get why McVeigh is so maligned for? I still have faith in him, even if you guys don't. :D:thumbsu:

if he shows me more than 5 good games next year, on his own merit, i'll think about having faith in him.

From what I have heard, he had shown clear leadership skills way back when he was in the ressies. Would love to see him as our next captain when Kirk hang up his boots (the captaincy is his for as long as he could keep playing).

And I'll like to see him as a stand-alone captain - I still think that having more one captain is gimmicky and while it's a good 'pat-on-the-back' to some deserving players, it doesn't do a lot, if anything, in game-time situations.

It's pretty memorable compared to the other two kicks he had.

I'm not sure anyone has suggested he should be captain though!

i'm not suggesting ablett should be captain either, although i am suggesting that had he not did what he did against geelong at the scg, we'd never have been in the grand final, let alone won it
ablett has heart, whatever flaws he might have....and i have nuthin against his elevation to the leadership group, which, as another poster pointed out, can include any player, for reasons best known to Guroos and the club management....

i'll make my own opinion clear again: malceski should be groomed from the under-23 group as a future captain, a standalone captain....right now, kirk should be standalone captain, and if he goes down, make goodes or c bolton skipper....

why do we have to wait so long for a new skipper?

Because they can't decide between Bolton and Goodes? Or are they hoping that Leo will drop out as well so they can promote both of them?

They should just tap Leo on the shoulder and hand the captaincy to Kirk and make Goodes and Bolton as vice-captains :thumbsu:

exactly right!
leo should be left to focus on simply playing well enough to keep a place in the 22...he has never been a natural leadership-type player, he's too individual
kirk is the OBVIOUS captain ("spiritual leader" is a wanky term), and goodes and c bolton, for their inspirational qualities, the next two, with malceski the stand-out candidate among younger players

Yeah, don't buy that 'spiritual leader' crap.
If Goodes and/or Bolton are promoted, effectively they are vice-captains anyway, since it's obvious who's going to make end of third quarters and who players really listen to when games are close.

In my view, we are somewhat disrespecting the level of Kirk's influence. I think it'll be a real shame if he ended his career without become a stand-alone captain for the swans. Barry Hall are his very best was able to exert influence through his playing performances, but now he've stepped down, there's really no point keeping Leo.

the point about respect is worth making....kirk has been our team leader for years, and there is something wrong with the fact he's never held the captaincy on his own....
i have always had a problem with leo as a captain, and yes, baz was an inspirational figure up to the 2006 season, but even during our run through the 05 finals, it was obvious kirk was the player the team looked to....
still remember footage of his speech to the players at three-quarter time v st kilda in the prelim final
and how the commentators played it up

Well spoke Mr Rancidpant. Swans would be stronger without the 'Leadership team' polava. Captain Kirk should be, well captain I would have thought.

Ablett or McVeigh

Are we trying to embrace mediocrity or what

Give it to Goodes, Malceski or O'Keefe, at least they will get a game every week

Well yes, the swans captain shouldn't be a headless chook.

Yes they should tap him on the shoulder and show him the team bus to Canberra, not AFL senior standard anymore. Probably a good captain in the magoos.

Whilst I myself am also hoping that Leo resigns as a captain to allow both Goodes and Craig Bolton to be promoted (given that they appear determined to have 3 captains), I am somewhat disgusted that a fellow Swans supporter would be so disrespectful as to suggest that he should be dropped straight to the Maggoos.

The guy has been an inspiration and has played above himself for years.

Yes he is getting older, lost speed and been affected by rule changes and IMO opinion has struggled a bit the last couple of years.

Still he and others of his vintage deserve one last chance to win us and themselves another flag.

If after 8 to 12 weeks, or after a few really bad games, it appears obvious that our window has closed and that he is struggling, then perhaps by all means tap him on the shoulder and suggest a graceful retirement, so that the kids can be blooded, but first give him and the other older players a chance.

Don't rubbish the guy, and please if as I suspect that we do struggle a bit and cop a few bad losses, lets just remember how much joy the likes of Leo have given us all and treat him and the other older players with the respect that they deserve.

Either your memory doesn't reach back beyond around round 15 or you have a radically different opinion from the coaching staff on what makes a good AFL player.

At the point Leo did his hamstring last season he was leading the B&F count. Suggest that Roos and co aren't on the same page as you...

If they aint in the best 22 no one deserves a game
