Looked like boys against men out there. Not having watched much NEAFL this year, do we still need listed player restrictions given the number of former AFL players floating around the NEAFL these days?

No, it would definitely strengthen the competition too. Which would benefit everyone.

3.4 Other Matters Any matter of any kind whatsoever not dealt with or provided for in these Rules may be dealt with in such a manner as the AFL deems fit, and the AFL’s decision will be final.

5.1 Laws of the Game Except where otherwise specified in these Rules, all Competition Matches shall be played in accordance with the current Laws of the Game as determined by the Australian Football League.

    AFL

5.5.3 Players Exceeding Permitted Number Where a Team has more than the permitted number of Players on the Playing Surface, the following shall apply: (a) a field Umpire shall award a Free Kick to the captain or acting captain of the opposing Team, which shall be taken at the Centre Circle or where play was stopped, whichever is the greater penalty against the offending Team; (b) a Fifty-Metre Penalty shall then be imposed from the position where the Free Kick was awarded; and (c) the Team shall lose all points which it has scored in the Match up to the time of the count.

5.5.4 Correct Number and Request Without Merit Where a count reveals that the opposing Team has the permitted number of Players on the Playing Surface, the following shall apply: (a) a field Umpire shall award a Free Kick to the captain or acting captain of the opposing Team, which shall be taken at the Centre Circle or where play was stopped, whichever is the greater penalty against the offending Team; (b) a Fifty-Metre Penalty shall then be imposed from the position where the Free Kick was awarded; and (c) if a field Umpire is of the opinion that a request was made under Law 5.5.1 primarily to delay play or such request did not have sufficient merit, the field Umpire shall report the Player who requested the count for Time Wasting under Law 19.2.2.

Score should have been wiped unless the AFL in 3.4 called in and said score will stand and decision is final.

That's what I was thinking. My recollection is the restrictions were introduced when we played in the old AFL Canberra league where we would regularly win by huge margins. The NEAFL is still below the standard of the VFL, WAFL and SANFL, but I'm not sure that the AFL reserves teams need such a handicap anymore.

But that's only for rules not provided in the book.

If that's the case what's the point of having rules.

But aren't they referring to these rules as NEAFL rules which don't appear in the NEAFL book.

Doesn’t really hold much relevance when the bylaws don’t let us play most of our players. Team was more than half academy kids 17/18/19 year olds vs men.

    It does have
    5.1 Laws of the Game
Except where otherwise specified in these Rules, all Competition Matches shall be played in
accordance with the current Laws of the Game as determined by the Australian Football League.

Depends on the intended interpretation and how the rule was intended as written. Seems to me it is a get out of jail clause.

Wrong way around. NEAFL laws state that for any incident that is not stated in their book - then refer to the Laws of the Game. In which it clearly states that points should be wiped. But 100% they didn't do it because it would be a disaster for Southport.

As hollow a victory as it would be for the Swans surely there is just as much a hollow feel for beating a team that was changed from the team they played all year due to Grand Final restrictions.

On a more positive note (and there aren't many) I thought some of our boys played well. Cameron did some good things, Bell had moments, O'Riordan and Dawson both looked a class above, Maibaum was solid, Reinhardt had some great efforts I thought. The stand out all day was James Rose, who looked like he was playing for a new contract. He was so far and away our best it wasn't funny.

Based on 3.4 I don't read it the same way as you. But agree that 5.1 is for match day so perhaps trumps 3.4 in this scenario.

It doesn't matter anyway. But if the Swans did appeal (I know they won't) they'd easily get the win imo.

I personally think we need to get it to the level of state leagues. I’d have no problem with academy footballers being farmed out to other clubs to help with their growth as well and this will help all clubs with their salary caps, allowing them to chase more seasoned (and expensive) players.

Yeah can't see them doing it would be a bad look. Shouldn't have to though, embarrasing stuff. Would like the AFL to step in and explain their way around it.

It would be embarrassing for the NEAFL, gutting for Southport who were clearly the better team and extremely embarrassing for Sydney a. To win in those immediate circumstances and b. To appeal.
