g'day mate, come back!

How do you know the score?

I rang the Queanbeyan ground

-QUEANBEYAN TIGERS-11.8-74-vs-SYDNEY SWANS-14.17.101

SYDNEY SWANS Goal Kickers: N Davis 3; A Eriksen 2; S Phillips 2, T.Schmidt 2; M Laidlaw; E Shaw; J Simpkin; L Vogels; J Willoughby

Best Players: K Thornton; N Davis; K Jack; D Spriggs; T Schmidt; J Simpkin

QUEANBEYAN TIGERS Goal Kickers: M Armstrong 5; P Williams 4; L Ellis; R Quade

Best Players: R Jaques; M Daniher; R Quade; C Davis; J Gilbert; P Williams

Good game, Sydney were undiciplined and Queanbeyan were surprisingly good (we played Queanbo last week and almost beat them so it was a surprise), Davis didn't play that well until it got real tight in the last qtr and starred.

Davis bides time productively to prove himself ready reserve
Scott Walsh
Monday, 14 August 2006

Nick Davis says he's ready. His report card from yesterday's Sydney reserves match against Queanbeyan says he's ready. All that remains is a raised thumb from Swans senior coach Paul Roos.

Davis yesterday gave compelling evidence he could make his AFL return against Geelong at Skilled Stadium in five days as he kicked a team-best three goals in Sydney's fighting 27-point win over Queanbeyan at Margaret Donoghoe Oval.

Last night, Swans assistant coach Peter Jonas believed the enigmatic goalsneak - axed to the reserves five weeks ago after managing just nine touches in an uninspiring performance against Adelaide in round 14 - was nearing his AFL recall.

"He was good. He ran pretty hard. A few times he got a bit tired so he needed a spell but he did as much as he possibly could have today," Jonas said. "It's fitness and form but he's got back some good form, he's dropped some weight and his fitness is up, so he'll certainly be looked at for selection next week."

Less than a year ago, the demoted star was Sydney's September hero in his team's premiership breakthrough, kicking four last-quarter goals against Geelong in a semi-final, including the siren-beater that ultimately shot the Swans into the grand final.

Davis - among Sydney's best yesterday through hard work rather than his typical miracle-maker qualities - said after the match that he had patience to prove he deserved a senior spot.

"I'm just playing my role in this team and if I can get back into the ones I'll play my role there," Davis said.

"I've got my weight and fitness back so I'll just wait my turn and I'll be ready."

The controversial forward roamed in Sydney's midfield and across half-forward in round 15 of the Canberra-based competition yesterday, and took several short breaks on the bench in his fifth match this year with the Swans B-team.

As well as contributing three goals, Davis played a pivotal assistant role in firing the defending premiers on for victory during time-on in the third quarter.

Queanbeyan, with just five wins this season, but inspired by clubman Chris Davis's 200th senior match, had shocked the Swans to lead by as much as 17 points midway through the term when Jason Satchell goaled from 40m.
But on the stroke of red-time, Nick Davis cleared the ball from a centre bounce and found key forward Luke Vogels, whose attempt fell short but was snapped through by Simon Phillips.
Two minutes later, Davis burned through the centre and hit teammate Matthew Laidlaw on the chest to put the Swans two points up at the last change. He ensured the Sydney reserves' two-year undefeated streak stayed alive in the 14th minute of the last quarter when he found space in a congested forward 50m zone and slotted his third goal from deep in the pocket.

That looks like a nice leap from young Erickson.

My first impression Liz was that he was taking the notion of being a Swan a bit too far. He looks like a bird with a huge wingspan. After looking at it for a while though, I agree with you. He does look to have timed it well and got very high. Mind you from 5'3" everything looks high.

Yeah, I did think of adding that if he doesn't cut it as an AFL footballer, he could maybe try out for the Australian Ballet. Swan Lake maybe...

i saw that matthew davis was named fourth best in a game two weeks ago, is there any chance that he will remain on the list next year. I would like to see him there, it would be disapointing to see him go without even gettin a senior game

You'd have to say that with clubs having to turn over at least 3 or 4 players a year (and no-one else likely to retire apart from Williams), Matt Davis would be close to the #1 guy with his head on the chopping-block right now. (Although David Spriggs, despite good form for the year, couldn't be too far behind because he's about 25yo and simply cannot crack a game.) M. Davis' best-players mention a couple of weeks back (his first for the year, I think) was heartening; I also hope he can turn it around in the last few weeks and earn himself an extension.

I would like to see Garruba also stay, I don't think he has had a fair go all year mainly playing down back in a predominately winning team. He is very very fast and has good skills

Reserves retain Quade Cup
13 August 2006

The Swans Reserves travelled to Margaret Donohoe Oval at Queanbeyan to contest the Quade Commemorative Cup.

From the very first bounce it was obvious Queanbeyan had set themselves for this game, and with both sides applying terrific pressure, goals were hard to come by.

With majors from Jonathan Simpkin and Josh Willoughby for the Swans, the scores were locked together at quarter-time.

Whilst goals came easier to both sides in the second quarter, the tempo of the game and the fierceness of the tussle remained high.

With two goals to Nick Davis, and singles to Tim Schmidt, Luke Vogels and Earl Shaw, the Swans went into the major break with their nose in front by just one point.

Queanbeyan continued to play strong, hard football, and by mid-way through the third quarter had a 17-point lead.

The Swans then started to play more direct, running football and late goals to Andrew Ericksen, Simon Phillips and Matt Laidlaw saw the Swans go into the break slightly in front, but with a strong belief they were now playing the team-oriented football needed to continue their run of victories.

Although the Swans superior fitness level was now showing, Queanbeyan continued to press and play hard physical football.

By the final quarter the Swans were reduced to an 18-man squad after Jared Crouch, Stefan Garrubba, Matt Davis and Josh Willoughby could take no further part in the game.

At this stage the ‘Bloods’ culture started to come through, with players now working harder to assist each other and goals from Nick Davis, Ericksen, Schmidt and Phillips, saw the Swans come home with a 27-point victory and retain the Quade Cup.

This week the Swans’ will attempt to continue their winning streak against Eastlake on Saturday 19 August at Manuka Oval at 2.15pm.

Final Score:

Swans Reserves- 2.3 (15) 7.6 (46) 10.9 (69) 14.17 (101)
Queanbeyan- 2.3 (15) 7.5 (45) 10.7 (67) 11.8 (74)

Best Players:

Thornton, N Davis, Jack, Spriggs, Schmidt, Simpkin

Goals:

N Davis 3, Ericksen, Schmidt, Phillips 2, Laidlaw, Shaw, Simpkin, Vogels, Willoughby

Team:

Davis N, Willoughby, Spriggs, Ericksen, Laidlaw, Chambers, Thornton, Crouch, Simpkin, Brabazon, Wall, Schmidt, Vogels, Currie, Barlow, Garrubba, Davis M, Shaw, Rowe, Phillips, Jack, Prior.

Well done Nick and Benny. Back in the team next week methinks.

Leave Benny out, but then again he could not be worse than Bevan.

Why not try Ericksen, could not go as bad as Doyley did. 3 Dropped marks were cringe material, and I like the guy.

That's what i was exactly thinking. With Doyle as the backup ruckman, nothings working. Jolly has to do all the work... :(

OUT: Bevan, Dempster/Teddy, Doyle
IN: Davis, Mathews, Eriksen

Woah...thats abit harsh on Dempster and Teddy. Teddy played pretty well...compared to his other performances earlier in the year... and Mathews ain't playing in the seniors. I read that Roosy say that matthews should have another run in the seconds...

IN: Davis, Eriksen
OUT: Bevan and Doyle
