Swans secure third Irishman

I can't believe that he's going, a massive sensation. If he'll be half as good a Aussie Rules player as he is football then. It'd make any Tyrone fan sick in the stomach to think that he's leaving.
He's last game will be the All Ireland final this Sunday before Tyrone senior team plays..(UP TYRONE)..should be great games. But good luck to the lad and all but, what a loss for Tyrone. He's a smashing player, one of the ones for the future. Pity.

Sorry to hear you will miss him RC, though i cant say im not excited about him coming to the swans. Big wraps on him then!
At least he will have a couple of mates from the mother country here when he arrives. Good luck in your final.:thumbsu:

They're not really my team, Cork's my team. But I'd be big fans of Tyrone. A lot of the family's from there, was there for 05 when they were last in the final. When Cork aren't in it, it's Tyrone all the way.

Anyway. I'd be excited. He's a really good GAA player. Probably, if I was pushed to say, he'd have more potential with GAA then most of the young Irish players over there now with the exception of Clarke, but he's a freak, lol. Hanley was a good player as well but Cooney, who in fairness I've seen play more then the others seems to have real potential.

Since when was Ireland the mother country? They are more of the Aunt country :D

PS if you have Foxtel you can get Setanta, but you have to pay extra.

How do you get Setanta? I have Optus rather than Foxtel but the programming is all the same, I think. I don't remember ever seeing an option to subscribe to Setanta.

Bad news liz, Setanta is only available on Austar/Foxtel.
Optus refuses to carry it.

I'd offer to upload highlights, but Chelsea V Man U is on at the same time and I can't record one program whilst watching another. :)

Oh well. Just means I'll have to try and find an Irish pub that will be showing it. Shouldn't be hard, living near Bondi!

Really, ye can get it over there. Fair enough. Take a look at him he's a fine player, and stick around for the seniors match as well, should be a great game.

I dont know if all this Irish importing is not taking away from keeping an eye on the local talent .
In the Sydney comp there was a 16 yr old that was leading goal kicker 2 years ago ,and last year at 17 played nearly all season 1st grade for Balmain and got rising star nom in one game with 4 goals and topped or was second highest goal scorer for them all year, and they didnt win a game all year.
My point is he was about 6.2, great kick ,a bit light ,but this year has put on about 10 kilo.
No one came near this kid ,now he has a good job on ships and has not played all year.
maybe we dont have to go that far ,and some help and incentive to some local talent may get some star of the future from our back yard .
and Kennelly has been great but his time has come ,lost pace and injury will hit him hard next year .

The first half of the minor match is over, he hasn't really been in the game to be honest.
Tyrone are leading 08-07 at the break.
But em, they brought him up in the studio pre match and they made a few interesting points, which the more I look at him, the more right they seem..

He stood out in the semi final all right, it was really the icing on the cake because they'd all ready one. Like they said that Cooney, he's a very big strong player, he can kick with both feet, he's confident, which all can be great for Aussie Rules, but he lacks pace, which makes him different to the other Irish lads out there at the minut.
They said that they don't think he'll like it much, he loves football, he's a very technical type player but he'll have no physial advantage in the game, like he might a bit here because he's a big enough lad. He loves the game, the way GAA is played, and they don't think he'll like Aussie Rules, because it's a game where you..get the ball, kick it up in the air and get smashed over and over it again, and he'll have no physical advantage in it. He'll just hate it.
Well that's what they said anyway.

Are the baked tatters with coleslaw or just butter ?

Dont forget with AFL training he will put on quite abit of weight. Brendan Murphy for example has put on over 10kg since he came to Australia 10 months ago.

I respectively suggest that the commentators you quote have very little idea of AFL footy if that is how they think it is played. Sure, it is more physical than Gaelic football but it is far from that description. If anything, the contested element of Australian Football continues to decline at the expense of non-contested, possession style football.

Who knows if he'll make it or not, love it or hate it. But he's made his choice (presumably having given it an awful lot of thought) and those comments just sound like sour grapes, and that they want this bloke to fail.

Well eh, ye'll have to wait another while for Cooney because the minor game finished a draw 0-14 to 0-14. A replay is needed. There'll be a massive crowd at the replay I'd say.
If the senior game is anyway as exciting as the minor game was then it'll be fantastic, for a minor match it was heartstopping, nail bitting finish.
Brilliant stuff, neither team deserved to loose.

They know it's more then that, they've no problem with him going, they were just pointing out how they think he'll hate it. They're not wrong like, he isn't really the type of player you'd have picked to want to go there. Nobody, and I don't know how many times we have to say this, wants them to fail. It's a fantastic oppurtunity.
It's not sour grapes or hoping they'll do badly it's an honest oppinoin.
The description of the game was to point out the part he'd hate..like I said, they're not wrong. But time will tell to see if he'll like it or not.

What has the past ordered sentence got to do with it ?

His names Coney. The Mayo centre forward actually looks like he'd do well at aussie rules. Monster of a guy with loads of skill. Great game. Can't wait for the replay.

Now admittedly I only watched the first 25 minutes (before switching over to Chelsea V Man Utd), but it was difficult to see what the club saw in Coney.

He started a as a forward and was moved into midfield.
Very left footed, didn't appear particularly quick and not much in the way of a vertical leap.
A somewhat round the corner kicking style, with no great accuracy or penetration on his kicking. And whilst there is far less contact in Gaelic football he never really looked as if he attacked a contest with full vigour.

As Horsebox said the guy who did stand out (and again it was only 25 minutes) was a guy called Aidan O'Shea (#11 from Mayo),. Looked like a ROK clone. Very good overhead, good mobility and awareness, quick, a good kick, hard at the contest and even more impressive, apparently this was his first game since a broken hand.

Now clearly the recruiting staff have studied Coney closely, but on my short view he was disappointing.

I didn't see the game so can't comment on the disparity between your impression and the report Grimlock has provided a link to. But even for every single AFL superstar you could find a game or two where they looked cod ordinary. You cannot draw any conclusions from a single match. If you read reports / comments on the WAFL GF at the weekend you will see a general view that each of Rich, Natanui and Yarran were decidedly outshone by other players. That doesn't mean that those three aren't going to get drafted in the first (possibly second for Yarran) round in the draft in November.

I watched the game from about halfway through the first half. I think Tyone were down about 6-2 when I started watching. Tyrone were being overwhelmed in the midfield at that stage and the game turned after Coney was moved into the midfield. He won a lot of ball and his passes to the forward line opened up the Mayo defence.

It's a difficult game to judge how successful a player would make in AFL. The action is non-stop and it suits more the smaller players with a big engine and a small turning circle.

I would have loved to see Coney up front banging over goals as he did in the semi-finals but that was not meant to be in this game. If anything, the one Swans player he reminded me of today would have been Mick Malceski in his vision and kicking skills.

I have to agree though, the standout player was the full forward for Mayo.

Cooney was quiet in the first half, didn't really have much to do, but got much more involved in the second half when he was moved back from corner forward to mid.
He kicked 5 of Tyrone's 12 wides, which wasn't great but his passing and vission was a stand out. He was very influentional in the second half and him switching roles was a big part of why Tyrone came back.

This is a stupid question but is a "wide" in Gaelic Football like a "behind" in Aussie Rules Football?
