Just like in politics there's public grandstanding and private negotiation and compromise.

Note that Pridham and Colless are talking about their own relationship with Eddie. Not about Eddie's untold scandals and mistakes. To me the quintessential Eddie moment was the Heath Shaw drink driving incident where Eddie got needlessly involved, made it worse and had to walk back his words. As a result we ended up with Rhys Shaw so thanks for that Eddie.

I read the story as a reminder that even post-presidency Eddie is still a powerful guy in football. A senior media performer on multiple platforms and with the ear of every media exec. If I were a club chairman I'd choose my words carefully.

For 2 years prior to the draft was almost universally seen as a top 5 selection, and potential no.1 in an open draft.

This is simply not true and has been covered on this forum too many times for people to still bring it up.

He was a consensus early pick based on his very good under age year and some dominant performances at NEAFL level.

It was not a strong year for midfield talent, and Mills was considered to be the best, or at least one of the best, by just about everyone with an opinion. Whatever has happened since thing to confirm that judgment is by the by, at the time that was where he stood.

Please provide at least one link that had him rated outside the Top 10 of that draft by either a draft watcher from the media or a club recruiter.

I'm sure as you keep repeating this statement as fact, you'll have something to back up your opinion.

I would think that McDonald and Campbell were both good chances for a round 1 debut, so it isn't so far fetched.

Think it all depends on who is fit. Like if we have Buddy, Reid, Heeney, Hickey, Sinclair and McLean all fit and the coaches want 2 ruckman (reduced Interchange cap from memory as well as back to full length quarters), I can't see McDonald getting a spot without us being way too tall.

Very interesting. Article suggests Bud was not aware of Hayson arriving and that he is an associate/friend of Martin. Will be fascinating to see where this goes and how the clubs and AFL treat this.

Also a Tom Derickx mention amidst the two highest profile players of the last decade. Always a treat.
