Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne noted the six main areas of improvement for Sydney this season: Marks (ranked 15th in 2020 to 6th in 2021), short kick percentage (16th to 7th), forward-half turnovers created (11th to 4th), inside 50s conceded (18th to 6th), points from turnovers (14th to 1st) and points from forward-half turnovers (12th to 1st).

Three of these six relate to winning the ball back off the opposition, which has allowed Sydney to score freely and seemingly at will.

Kennedy believes the defensive mechanisms which saw Sydney challenge for premierships for a large portion of the last decade remain the same, but offensively he praised assistant coach Don Pyke’s influence on the group.
“When ‘Horse’ spoke to us he mentioned they were talking about getting Don Pyke over from WA and mentioned his record at Adelaide,” Kennedy said.
“Underneath him they were the best attacking team in the competition. We’ve always been strong defensively so that element of offence and strategy was really exciting.
“He’s a big part of why we’ve been able to score more this year and the way we move the ball.
“We haven’t necessarily changed the way we’ve defended. We haven’t changed that mentality of defence, pressure and that is still the catalyst of our game.”
A further glance at Kennedy’s role in 2021 makes for interesting analysis. He remains an important cog in the wheel, but he’s happy to play second fiddle to the band of youngsters.
“I’ve been playing a fair bit less game time and we’ve been rotating more numbers through the midfield which has been great,” he said.
The veteran is right. He has spent just 74 per cent of matches on the field, well down on Callum Mills (84%) and elite midfielders from other clubs such as Christian Petracca (89%) and Patrick Cripps (87%).
But in each of the past two games, he’s accumulated 27 disposals, demonstrating there are still some miles left in his ageing legs.
He believes “the sky’s the limit” for Mills, while he’s noticed a shift in Lance Franklin’s approach in recent times too.
“The main difference is his investment into the group and the younger players,” Kennedy said of Buddy.
“He drives them to be better, coaching them, teaching them. He sees that as his ticket back to September. You can tell how invested he is with that.”

That's kinda damning on Longmire in a way, i think what Bedford said in another thread that Longmire needed help with the modern game is absolutely correct.

I wouldn't say damning. It's obvious that Horse is better defensively than offensively. Pyke is probably better in that particular area, but Horse is still no slouch where attacking is concerned. It's just not his clear strength.

I reckon what it does show is that he is not the stubborn, defensive curmudgeon that many have pegged him as. Clearly he recognised our need to improve in attack, and was modest enough to recognise that he could not do it alone. Sometimes being a great coach is just checking your ego at the door and delegating.

It was poor, 3 nothing questions and was done in about 3 minutes. Basically Chad talked about how the young guys are a tight knit group and he's made friends for life in his time at the Swans so far - basically the bloods culture is alive and going well

Nice positive article;

"...this was the new Sydney in full flight. Fearless. Direct. Lightning fast. Thrillingly audacious."
".... nobody inside Sydney's HQ that will see this as anything other than the plan coming to fruition."
" Fundamentally, what's happening in Sydney is real." :)

Agree it’s over the top and way too early but it’s better than the doom and gloom that was in the media a few months ago and the scathing criticisms that came from posters on this board alone.

The truth is usually somewhere in the middle. We’re not unbeatable but we won’t just unravel. If all goes well we could finish top 6, that’s not an outlandish prediction.

Our next 3 games are very winnable. If we can win 2 of them that will have us with 5 wins with 16 rounds to go, and we will only need to win 7 of those 16 games to secure a place in the finals.

Sturt
Pridham and Healy get to work on the hypocrites taking advantage of F/S and NGA picks and also complaining about the Swans Academy.

To be fair it's so far been mostly fans complaining, but we know there'll be plenty of Melbourne clubs privately steaming about the injustice of Sydney developing young players and making good draft calls

They’ve gone and built our hopes up. I wasn’t expecting to care so much lol. I still think top 6 is realistic and top 4 next year if we maintain a relatively healthy list.
