Damien Hardwick says he will challenge umpires to closely monitor Sydney’s short-kicking game style after it picked apart Richmond’s defence.
The three-time premiership coach conceded his backline struggled to combat the Swans’ fast ball movement in the 45-point loss at the MCG, but questioned the distance of some of their passes.

“Their short probing game was evident,” Hardwick said.

“The distance of kick, the shortness, was really hard to defend.

“That’s something we’ll look at and we’ll challenge the umpires on, that distance of kick.”

Hardwick said he would not be overhauling his defence or move to a man-on-man system in the face of quicker ball movement this year.

“That’s the system we play and it’s held us in good stead over the last few years and will hold us in good stead again,” Hardwick said.

“We didn’t implement to the level of our normal capacity. We’ll go to work again.

“Sometimes you have to lose the battle to win the war.

“We’ll still back in our system. The sample size is not to a level where we would make significant change.

“We also have got a really good understanding the game evolves and we may have to evolve with it. At this stage we will tweak our system, we won’t throw out our system.”

Hardwick said captain Trent Cotchin was more likely than not to play Port Adelaide on Friday after he finished the Swans game on the bench with ice on his hamstring and groin areas.

Bachar Houli could also return for his first game since last year’s Grand Final.

Hardwick confirmed the Tigers could also have one or two first gamers with Dion Prestia and Kamden McIntosh set to miss the clash with Port.

“Sydney had a great game, we didn’t play particularly well. I’m a pretty proud coach of a pretty proud playing group. Judge us on the next four weeks, see how we go then,” Hardwick said.

“It’s a great opportunity for players to grow in to roles. It certainly reinvigorates the coaching group and I’ve got no doubt it will reinvigorate the playing group as well,” he said.

“There will be at least one debutant, and possibly two.

“There’s a number of guys we are looking at. We are very bullish on the young talent we have.”

Hardwick threw his support behind the suggestion of an English Premier League-style loan system.

“Anything that gives a young player a chance to play the game, I love,” Hardwick said.

“We’ve got a young kid by the name of Samson Ryan that we’d love to loan (to the Suns).

“End of the day this kid, we’re really excited about what he’s gonna bring but we’ve got Coleman-Jones, we’ve got Mabior Chol, we’ve got Samson – so he’s sitting there playing forward in VFL footy.

“Not that I’d like to give them Samson if he’s playing against us but anything that gives a player the opportunity to play at AFL, I think we should look at, absolutely.”

Put simply Hardwick is a sooky little campaigner. Bet my comment on the article won't get past the editors!
Not surprised he wants the AFL to have a look at it. It stuffs up his gameplan. I am glad to see that Longmire doesn't feel the need to pander to the AFL every time it doesn't go his way.

I feel conflicted though because I totally agree with him on the loaning of players. We were in a rough state last season with regards to key position players all being injured simultaneously. Including a stage where we had no choice but to throw Aliir in the ruck. When a position is as specialised as the ruck they need to allow the clubs a bit more leeway for when something like that is happening to the suns now and us last year comes up.

He was also surprisingly humble in the post match presser about the fact that Sydney were just too good. Clearly he's no Clarkson.

He got kicked in the pants last year for complaining during the press interview so he waits a few days and then has a whine about our kicking game. It's no different for any other bloke Clarkson has trained a coach. Back handed compliments that are vaguely insulting and the give the opposition no credit.

Blakey and Rowbottom have re-signed until 2024!

Blakey, Rowbottom and Warner all re-signed in the last 36 hours is wonderful news. We need to get both McCartin and McDonald re-signed ASAP as well. Those two need to be our next targets.

McGuire having snide digs on Classified. Straight out suggests the AFL is funding our academy without anyone pulling him up on it. When Ross Lyon points out how good the academy is for the game, McGuire changes tack and makes another smartarse comment " see you don't need CoLA, you can do it with kids." Yet you watch him try and get the academy removed. He is a dead set Trump-like lying campaigner.

Sigh this academy stuff gets more out of hand over the next few weeks and we might do a special reunion podcast.

Yesterdays man desperately trying to stay relevant. Getting laughed at on the MB atm. His opinion is obsolete these days.

It’s a compliment of sorts that coaches and media personalities are so desperate to bring us down to earth.

Usually it’s the other sides trying to figure out how to beat the premiers, but now it’s the premiers who need the umpires help because they can’t understand how to beat us.

On top of that the kids can’t sign with us fast enough so the pain for the opposition is set to continue for a while. How fun is this season?

The more I think about it the more irritating it is, even if it is a good thing that we’re giving them something to worry about.

If the umpires all of a sudden are watching us closer than any other team it just proves yet again how easily they pander to the Victorian coaches/media. I hope anyone who was giving him credit after saying we’re "Richmond like" is now seeing what a petulant little snake he is.

I nominate Tedeski to justify his attacks on Bud and otherwise lockstep agreement with whatever the Club does. Think he would be great fun.

Ticky009 would be a great addition and probably the only voice of reason between Bonz, Bruce and Ted.

Rounds 7 and 8 fixtures out.
We play both on Saturday night 7.25pm, broadcast on 7. v Geelong SCG then Melbourne at the MCG.
Shows that our attractive brand of footy is being given prime time.

TBH I think we've got priority for FTA over BL v PA and Ade v PA solely because our opponents are Victorian and that's the only way they get on FTA, whereas the other teams are on locally regardless.
