I think they were given the South because it is a more locked in Aussie Rules territory. Wagga Wagga, Albury. Denny, Moama, Wentworth, Broken Hill etc. We had to suddenly develop the North in a big way. The Black Diamond league has been especially beneficial for this and the Coffs League. I lived up in Coffs for a while. They are very proud the Swans come there pre-season. I come from The Hill, our main game has always been Aussie Rules. RU & RL do not even count. There have been many players out of The Hill;

Stephen Hywood
Jack Owens
Chris Duthy
Georgs Lakes
Brett Staker
Jarod Rivers (Father is from The Hill)
Tex Walker
Isaac Cumming
Dean Soloman
Mitch Clisby
Brett Cook
Ron O'Dwyer
Ron Serich
Andy Bennett
Bob Troughton
Ron Serich

I think Lakes would have been a champion had he not done an ACL in around '69/70. He came back and played but could not turn on the lft. He was traded to South from Dees in '72 but only played 6 games due to his lack of mobility. Today he would have had an op and been back on the park but in those days they just played on with the tear.

The South/West have provided the VFL/AFL and the SANFL with some truly great players.

Jack Owens was my uncle. He played forward pocket in a Glenelg side that were perennial cellar dwellers. But he managed to top the goal kicking '27, '28 & '32 in a bottom side. He was the first Glenelg player to kick 100 goals. Jacky played in Glenelg's 1934 Premiership. He was probably the greatest player to ever come out of Broken Hill. He was never interested in playing VFL as the VFL comp did not pay enough at that time and it wasn't really superior to the SANFL at that time.
No idea what the Hill is and
then there is the media

I added 15-20kg from 30-36 by enjoying food too much and not making the time to exercise. 😉

30 is the year, the year where suddenly your metabolism goes to shit and the foods you used to eat and enjoy and not gain any weight suddenly has you packing on 10kg overnight. I was not prepared for this :p

Article in the Hun ranking midfields in the comp

10. SYDNEY

The top-liners: Callum Mills (18 Games in 2021, 112 Average SuperCoach Score), Luke Parker (22, 109), Tom Hickey (20, 103), Josh Kennedy (21, 93), Callum Sinclair (4, 82), Oliver Florent (22, 76), Peter Ladhams (15, 76), James Rowbottom (15, 75), Chad Warner (12, 69), Sam Naismith (0, 0)

The top-ups: Dylan Stephens (6, 31), Lewis Taylor (1, 31), Lachlan McAndrew (0, 0), Matty Roberts (0, 0), Angus Sheldrick (0, 0), Corey Warner (0, 0)

MICK SAYS

Here is what I’d like to see more of – Tom Papley attending centre bounces and spending more minutes as a midfielder. He did it to great effect in the final three rounds of last year and it’s a move that should absolutely continue. Papley brings a different skill set to the rest of the Swans midfielders as well as energy and agility, which complements the likes of Luke Parker, Callum Mills and Josh Kennedy well. Start him onball and give him the creative licence to push forward when he likes. The continued growth of Oliver Florent, Chad Warner and James Rowbottom will hold Sydney in good stead, plus a pinch of Isaac Heeney and Will Hayward rotating through the midfield. The recruitment of ruckman Peter Ladhams to support Tom Hickey will also prove important. The Swans improved in many key statistical areas last season and I’m expecting a further spike this year on the back of another pre-season for the younger players.

You must be fun at parties.

"You are talking about your jobs. That is not an acceptable party-related topic. Please refrain from your diversion in conversation and return to the original topic. Also I am not a robot"
The life of it , but that's off topic and busy looking at my South jumper

Prefer to push Gulden in the middle... or you know Heeney like all the other reports are saying.

Papley was great in bursts there last year.

But I would want it to be the exception rather than the norm, move him there is we need a quick impact.

Oh i do not mind him in there in burst.

But if a small fwd was going to be earmarked for more mid time he would be minimum third in line IMO.

JPK's thoughts.
Main takeaways;

Mills a natural leader;
Kennedy, who stepped down as co-captain to pave the way for his teammate’s elevation, believes Mills is a “natural” leader.
“I learned a lot on the hop, whereas ‘Millsy’ is very much a natural leader and you could see that in his first year at the footy club,” Kennedy told News Corp.
“It’s probably just been a little bit of development to the point now that he’s ready to go and his football takes care of itself and he’s absolutely consistent there.
“But now having the licence to take control in a leadership sense is a natural evolution for him.”

Obligatory Stephens reference and Errol the midfielder;
Dylan Stephens is one player he tipped to thrive in his third season and he expected Errol Gulden to spend more time in the midfield after an excellent rookie campaign up forward.

And a call out for Beefy;
Top-20 draftee Angus Sheldrick has made an impression on Kennedy, too.
“He’s got all the attributes you love in a footballer,” Kennedy said.
“He came in and straightaway made his impact felt physically. He went one-on-one with ‘Paps’ (Tom Papley) in one of his first sessions and I think ‘Paps’ came off second-best.”

JPK predicted Warner's rise last year. If there's one voice I trust from the club it's Kennedy.

Last year he was also asked who would a good smokey Supercoach pick and laughed and said Mills. He was the only Swan to average over 100 according to the AFL website

Swans 2022 preview on Fox sports

They spend the article talking up Warner and then leave him out of their 22 in favour of Campbell & Stephens. Now I'm a fan of those two, especially Campbell and I can see Stephens potentially being in the round 1 side, but what have they done in the eyes of the Fox Footy "journalist" to get ahead of Warner? He's shown twice as much as either of them (so far) and it makes me think they think less of Warner because he's a pick 39 and the other two were both pick 5. No other explanation for it. Shoddy reporting IMO and I know it's just an article same as all the rest but I hate seeing gun kids be undersold in favour of the ones who come with all the draft hype.

Swans 2022 preview on Fox sports
a good read, thanks Swannnnn..
Seemed to get most points right.
liked the point about the Swans strength is as a whole .. rather than superstars
Liked the point of emerging young players with a diverse set of talents and that equates to a good balance.
Credit was also given to the Swans experienced players.. and rightly so
Also liked the credit given to Horse. didn't under value Pykes addition, but gave credit where credit is due.

The article suggested no finals 'hang over'. Agree 100% ! I can not see a Swans team resting on their past achievements, instead see a team that is hungrier than last year. Reckon Horse plays a crucial part in that.

I have my issues with the Daily Telegraph's organisation, but it's great to see them dedicating the back page to Sydney's only AFL club.
I see what you did there:laughv1:

I'm completely stunned they put us on page 1. Their lack of coverage during the actual AFL season is disgraceful.
