We made the GF in 2022 ahead of schedule and it showed. The group has matured that little bit more and are starting to come into the peak of their powers. We've also had some very handy additions in Grundy, Jordan and Adams as well.

2016 isn't even the same squad.

I'm talking about the size of the MCG being suggested as a handicap which I don't believe it is given our personnel and gameplan.
Very good point about getting to the 2022 GF unexpectedly early! This year’s team (as a whole, + stronger bodied & more experienced etc) is probably twice as good as the ‘22 team so I’m quietly confident “that” game will not present any mental issues to “this” team.
However I’m not happy that we’re getting FA games at the G, and also concerned that, IF we make the granny, we cop say the Blues or Pies from an umpiring point of view 🤦‍♂️

Did say that the club will take it , but the planning was for 24/25 with this group

LLoyd is a flog. Must have the memory of a goldfish if he considers Carlton a serious threat.

"That's where Michael Voss is coaching at the peak of his powers at the moment – what he's doing in taking away the strength of opposition teams."

We gave them a 31 point head start then switch it on half way through the first term and blitz them by 52 points for an 83 point turnaround. It makes Geelong's 65 point turnaround look competitive.

That's the peak of Voss' powers...

Blues lost Weitering against us and had a few out, they are a good side.

I'm not worried about the MCG grand final day. In fact the more I think about it, IF we do make it (long way to go ) but IF then I almost want a Blues or Pies and to beat them. So no one can say afterwards we got it easy.

Been saying it since 2022 :p

Yeah and we have our critics over big games etc. I've watched a lot of the blues, they can play. May be scum, but they have a good team IMO

I think people are way too fascinated by what they consider to be player-targeting "tags" but are not really tags, but structural roles that intercept with particular players. A lot of the more structurally defensive jobs, and this goes for Rowbottom and Jordon too, aren't really designated tags.

For example, the defensive forward roles intersect with interceptors and ball users because of where they are in their respective systems, it's not necessarily directed just at that player regardless. Watch how often Jordon is defending space or a disposal direction rather than sitting right on a player.

All three of the supposed must-tag Swans have secondary roles and counterattacks which I think make an all-day player first target job very difficult to apply. It's quite likely teams have put plenty of attention into them already.

Heeney just goes forward to outmark guys who try to tag him in midfield and runs all day to beat opponents who can't keep up with his aerobic fitness.

Gulden and Warner can both go right inside stoppages or well out to the fringes of them and mess with structures that way. Gulden is an even better endurance runner than Heeney and it's mostly only a wing who could go with him all day.

Warner uses his pace to burn off opponents and find space that way, and is also a capable forward threat.

Around the ball they also have Rowbottom and Grundy focusing on bash and crash to create lanes and space.

I'm just deeply unconvinced the traditional all day tag works on anything but the most one dimensional player these days. Or is even tried as often as is claimed.

They dont quite have the depth nor bottom 6 players so they need a good run injury wise but their best 22 is quite solid.

I'm just saying they are a contender that's all.

I think we are better but it comes down to individual games and luck etc.

Agree with that, and its a bit annoying that they're using the wrong descriptions for the role that's being done because it changes the context of what the players are doing. And undersells their efforts.

He wants to see Chad/Errol & Isaac handle a tag. Not sure any team can tag all 3 but he wants to see at how Chad handles a tag. And he still thinks defence is vulnerable.

The way Gerald was thinking is spot on as tagging out one or two of our big 3 also takes away a lot of scoring power overall.

Some coach is going to try it not sure which one.

Im actually more confident in our defence as the weeks go on Melican/Rampe have been terrific

One things for sure, if we beat either the blues or pies in a prelim the commentators will be deflated as all hell for not getting their coveted blues Vs pies grannie.

Blues, Pies and Cats can all give it a shake if they put their best team on the paddock in good form. Guys like Hawkins can lift for one last huzzah! Our lack of size at the back could bite us with Blues or Cats. Less worried about Pies with chaosball. Getting to the GF in two is important.

Sportsday is such a good listen they mentioned Brisbane stats are right back near 2023 levels are they still a chance or to much catchup?

Good question! The pack behind us have been pretty inconsistent so it's hard to predict. They are two games behind 8th but have decent %.
In the run home they play 4 teams currently in the 8. Win a couple of those plus the games they "should" win and they can certainly make it.
Making top 4 is also possible because it's only one game between 4th and 8th at the moment.

Poor Gerald probably feels like most do on here.
I'm sure he does.

He has some reasonable points (especially about backline depth), but then I think the obvious bit he is missing is important too.

Yes, other teams will improve from here and come hard. But is there any tangible evidence to say we are playing at our peak level yet?

We've played some amazing footy this season - no one should doubt that. Have we put together multiple performances where we've been on for all four quarters - nope. Have we let good teams take a big lead on a couple of occasions, and then proverbially whipped them when we woke up - sure have. Have we seen our full strength midfield group yep - sure haven't. Have we got our club captain to come back in at some point, and another experienced warrior up our sleeve if needed - sure have.

All that says to me is that we have massive room for further improvement in performance levels too. Maybe we won't peak much further, but I fancy there are a few more gears to come from here.

As good as some other teams are (especially dickhead Mcguire's mob, who are looming large) - I think our ceiling this year, if we improve as one would hope we can from here, is higher than any other team to this point looks like getting anywhere near close.

That may well not win a flag in the end - we know too well how hard it is to get it all right on the day that matters, let alone the prelim final weekend which can be the toughest of them all.

But if we get to the level I think we can, and play somewhere near that on Grand Final day if we are lucky to make it that far - then it is going to take a colossal effort from another team to stop us walking away with the cup. Not saying it can't happen - but I've not convinced any other team can reach that level this season etiher.
