Will Hayward made a slow start to the season, but the Swans forward tells AFL.com.au's Gemma Bastiani how he's starting to get back to his best

With Joel Amartey, Logan McDonald, Hayden McLean, and even Peter Ladhams arguing their case to be key parts of the tall setup ahead of the ball.....

Sorry, they lost me at Twanger Ladhams (aka Potluck Pete)

Bucks is one of the best if not the very best. Has great insights and a low-key non-bombastic style.
I like Bucks. I liked him with Lyons and Brown on the couch. A bit of humour but mostly just good analysis. I don't want my footy to be funny or for football commentators to try to be comedians. Yeah, more Bucks for me. Very likeable guy

12APR25: Magpies vs Swans Match Reports

Paywalled:

As perplexed as anyone about our performance Friday Night But We are far from playing with a full deck of cards. Quite obvious reading a lot of stuff in the media and here that playing without a full deck of cards is not isolated to our personel on field.

Buckley talks about Collingwood's ability to block all our avenues to goal was telling. We insisted on doing the same things over and over again. Not only that if a coach, like McRae knows how to block us every other coach will too. That is the sign a team will plummet to the depths of the ladder. Just look at Melbourne. Still playing the same game style they did when they won the Premiership but without any effective tall forwards. If we don't develop a new game style we will find ourselves in the bottom six.

The other thing is, we knew what they were going to do but did nothing to stop it. Leigh Matthews always says don't get beaten by what you know. We knew their game style and we were beaten by it all day. We did nothing to stop them putting the extra back to block the corridor either. We just let them do it. It was the case of the Master Coach versus the amateur. Cox has got to get better soon or we will be having a very long season. This is not about personnel this is about the inability of the coach to understand the opponent. The inability to fashion anything that even gave us a fighting chance of winning that game. I turned it off because I was so angry at what was happening. I didn't bother looking at the last half of the last quarter because the game was gone. By then, there was nothing we could do to save it. They did the same things all night. They were totally predictable but we were unable to stop predictable. We have become so predictable Port will probably do the same to us as they did last year.

Dear Dean Cox,

We need you to come up with a new Game Plan because this one has worn out it's welcome. It no longer works. What's more, it is Horse's Gme Plan. You need to work out whether you are going to be your own man or Horse's understudy for the remainder of the year. If you choose to be horse's understudy, it will be a very long year. We will not win too many games playing this style, an old style game plane, no matter who we have on the park. It is too predictable, and it does not adjust to defensive actions against an opposition game plan that is already very known. In other words, with this plan, there is no man on man or evening up the contest. You allow the extra, which is killing us and only the inept sides, like North, fall to our game style. We have not beaten any side likely to be in the top 10 so far. With what we are doing we won't. No matter who plays. You could have the best side from Carnival Footy and still lose if the opponent knows exactly what is coming. But you do not react to what you know is to come from the opposition. I think you guys failed to analyse Collingwood properly. That is the only explanation for Friday I can think of.

Alternative universes depending on the result

I'd suggest it was less about game plan and more about execution. When we were crisp we went end to end at will.

Of course the Pies adjusted but that was coupled with a dramatic drop in our pressure around the ball and a general dip in intensity from some of our leaders.

On top of that, sometimes the opposition just deserves credit for playing well.

This one isn't on Cox.

Cox is new to the role there is a learning curve for any new coach and he had minimal input into the list changes- Im sure he was involved as an assistant but still.

Finally hasn't had hear his best team, is sort of working on the fly and whatever changes he is trying to make will take time - even if we are fit.

If this year ends up a write off that wouldn't surprise me in a way.
