I like it. He can clunk a mark and can definitely be a marking target to simply bring it to ground.
I think Big O will ruck maybe 60-70% of time as he is a weapon around the park too. When Darcy is down in the forward line, just has to bring it to ground and let your smalls destroy us like the GF. We are terrible at defending once the ball hits the deck. Taking nothing away from Ah Chee and Lohman but we made them look like Cyril Rioli and Eddie Betts in the GF.

Fort might only play forward when Hipwood and Morris is off the ground. Especially with Hippy coming back from injuries they might both only play 80% TOG

Oh, sorry I thought this was the Lions v Sydney thread. Plenty of teams don't have a match up for Harris, yet they can still beat us. Just wondering did Joe always beat Taylor, like Jackovich did to Carey?

The discussion wasn't about wins or losses but giving the opportunities for Kai and Cam to take big marks and my point was that this was helped by Joe getting all the attention from oppositions best key backs. Now it is far easier for someone like Taylor to roll off Fort and make it harder for Kai and Cam to take those marks so we can't just rely on them stepping up when now it is actually harder for them to play at the level they did last year

Yes that's my point. It's now much easier for him to do that to us this year and without Joe there was no premiership last year. GWS probably would've won
I wouldn't worry. As an impartial observer, your list is better overall this year. Ashcroft jnr every bit as good as Will and Marshall a gun in the making. And in Fagan and Stu Dew, you have an excellent coaching team that will tweak your team to keep ahead of the pack.

Is it harder though, what if they get better? Foward lines can be structure to pull defenders out of position as happened with the Lizard last week. Kept deep, no impact. We don't have to play Fort every week you know, put a lock down forward like Gardiner on him. I would have thought Hipwood or Logan would get the best full backs. You make it out like no Joe will cripple our forward structure, just can't see it for mine.

No I didn’t. All I said was it would be harder for Kai and Cam to take big pack marks.

No reason to do 2+2=1,748,362,373.28375927

Once again will it though, we haven't even played a game yet and you are talking us down. Your opinion diffusers from mine, and your math is rubbish ;)

It's a good week for Fort given Oscar had such a limited pre season and Grundy has a big tank. He didn't look great v Hawks but A) Meek is a gun and big and B) he and papley were tests so presumably will be fitter now.

Good opportunity for Fort and Oscar to hammer in to Grundy and get a rest. Fort has great hands and a bit of forward nous, obviously looks like Bambi running around. I think with the rest of our forwards all pretty nimble, including hippy and Morris. I think if we have the resting ruckman playing deep and make sure one of the smalls is there to crumb it could work well.

I am heading along and trying to temper my expectations still given our prep. Judging from seating map it will be pretty full.

Here is the BIG factor i haven't seen spoken about a lot (apologies if i missed it). It will be 31 degrees when the game starts! and only cool down to 28 degrees by the end. That is bloody hot weather. Will be humid too. So:

Win the contest and don't be chasing tail - massive advantage
Which side is fitter? both shortened pre season. Swans had a match under their belt. Probably swans?

I remember thinking in 2023 GF it would be a clear advantage to us in the heat, but the 'play in the heat' thing doesn't really seem to apply any more, i think fitness standards so much better.

What do you think is more likely; losing Joe will have a negative or positive impact to our forward line?

More likely? That's crystal ball stuff. Lance Franklin left Hawthorn, and most said they would suffer, two more premierships later did losing Buddy do that much damage as they reorganized? Truth is your assertion is unquantifiable.

I wish! The guy is an absolute gun. No offence, but I think he's even better than Harris.
Maybe in some circumstances but Harris would of spoiled Daniher in that marking contest if he played for the Giants. They can keep Taylor we will keep Harris.

I'll confess, I'm a Lions member but long time Swans supporter who happens to live in Bne. I feel I know the Lions almost as well as my team and can view the Lions objectively.

The loss of the 2023/24 version of Daniher is huge. He was fit and motivated. What impressed me the most was his work rate as he was able to push up the ground and back and also exert good forward pressure to keep the ball in F50. His ruck craft was also crucial in that Big O could have a break without the Lions giving away too much at the contest.

However I think his loss is offset by the expected improvement in your young forwards. Lohmann and Morris were so impressive and can only get better. Raynor I predict will follow a similar trajectory to Heeney. Levi will probably start forward and has very good goal sense. Ah Chee should be playing at peak confidence and was almost BOG in a grannie. Added to this, your mids are strong 2 way runners and all capable of kicking goals along with Zorks and Coleman from HB.

Overall, I'd say the net loss of Daniher, especially once you get use to playing without him is zero.

So when do you think we’ll next not win the premiership? 2029? 2030 maybe?

Sam Day had been set to make his Brisbane Lions debut on Saturday against the Swans
Lions coach Chris Fagan has confirmed off-season recruit Sam Day was to set make his official Brisbane debut in Saturday’s round one grand-final rematch against Sydney before withdrawing due to the death of his father.
Day’s father Chris died on Thursday following a long illness, leading to Brisbane not naming him in the team that was announced that night.
Having joined the Lions in the off-season from the Gold Coast Suns, Day had done enough to get first crack at filling the tall forward void left by the retired Joe Daniher.
“He would have played in the team,” Fagan said on Friday ahead of the SCG battle
“We spoke the other day just before his dad passed away and he was worried about not playing this weekend.
“I said ‘mate, you’ve got to go to see your dad’, which he knew he had to do, so straight away we released him from feeling any responsibility in that regard.
“In his short time at the club, he’s become a really popular guy. He’s level-headed, mature, and we were looking forward to him playing him this weekend, but it wasn’t to be.
“I’m sure he’ll get another opportunity down the track.”

I'll take either at the Swans. Our best defender is Melican.....
Ha ha . Yep.

Re Daniher it's a big loss no doubt but if we adjust and a couple of other players come on it's conjectural what that loss will amount to in terms of the scoreboard.

I wish he was still playing obviously , let's see how we adjust and what the outcome is.

Go through each of those clubs midfields and select the player he’d replace.

The three clubs I had in mind were West Coast, Richmond and St Kilda.
Carlton: Lucas Camporeale
Richmond: Sam Banks
Essendon: Archie Roberts
Hawks: Cameron Mackenzie
Sydney: Justin McInerney
North Melb: Tom Powell
Bulldogs: Sam Davidson
Collingwood: Lachie Sullivan
Port: Jackson Mead
St Kilda: Angus Hastie
WCE: Jack Hutchinson
Melbourne: Jack Henderson

These guys are listed as part of their teams midfield for this weekend. I'd back Dev over all of them in the midfield.
