I was surprised Day was not named.
Then it came out about his father's death so i thought that may have been the reason but was not certain.
Fagan now confirming he will get first crack at Joes position when he returns.

How will Fort be used.
Pretty much as a relief player, i think.

2024 average TOG
Oscar - 81.3% (relief 18.7%)
Hippy - 79.9% (relief 20.1%)
Morris - 65.2% (relief 34.8%)

So, if Fort just does relief, that's 73.6% but he can do a little more and Morris may lift that % a bit in his 2nd year.
In Forts 3 full games in 2024 his average TOG was 75.7%.

A fit Hippy should be able to get his TOG to the 85% plus mark, but they may be a bit cautious early in the season and see how that groin is going.

Carlton: Lucas Camporeale
Richmond: Sam Banks
Essendon: Archie Roberts
Hawks: Cameron Mackenzie
Sydney: Justin McInerney
North Melb: Tom Powell
Bulldogs: Sam Davidson
Collingwood: Lachie Sullivan
Port: Jackson Mead
St Kilda: Angus Hastie
WCE: Jack Hutchinson

Melbourne: Jack Henderson

These guys are listed as part of their teams midfield for this weekend. I'd back Dev over all of them in the midfield.
You can't name the clubs I mentioned he'd get a run in. However, Sam Banks is a half back, and played half back last night. Much, much better kick than Dev.

Next, I did provide the link to the afl article listing each clubs best 22, as some of the teams for the weekend are missing starting mids;

Carlton missing Jagga Smith and Elijah Hollands (there's a career at risk of blow up the nose).

Hawks missing Worpel.

Collingwood missing Tom Mitchell and De Goey.

Essendon missing Parish, and we haven't seen enough of Roberts to know if he's made a step up as a second year player.

Sydney are missing a plethora of best 22, regardless McInerney is a way better half forward than Robertson, and has had some very good games in his career.

Tom Powell has shown more at AFL level than Robertson. He might play for North, but the kid is a decent player. Much cleaner kick than Robertson.

Bulldogs, I mean they're missing Bont. Not to mention the rest of their starting midfield in Richards and Treloar.

Mead was picked one spot ahead of Robertson in 2019 draft, and has played quite a few better games than Robertson ever has.

As for Melbourne, they're basically in rebuild mode. They're playing a bunch of kids, and you've literally picked the last player on their bench, who has never played AFL before, and is likely their Sub. He most likely plays half forward at AFL level, and Melbourne are missing Picket and Tholstrup, both of whom get a game ahead of Henderson.

You're trying to get too cute and technical about it. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

He'd be in most teams this round and you haven't said anything to change my mind - there where multiple players i could have picked from each team to sub Dev into.

I can appreciate why fans (like yourself) might not rate him particularly highly. But Imo he is a victim of circumstance at our club and is good enough to be a quality 2nd tier midfielder at AFL. (I just hope he gets his chance at some point in the next few years).

But that wasn't the original discussion.

The original discussion was teams best 22.

I don't believe you actually know half the players you listed, or where they play on the field.

And look at my profile pic, I've had Dev there since before his first game in 2020. I have been his number one cheerleader here.

Sam Banks is a half back, doesn't play mid. McInerney is a half forward, and has had some very, very good games, better than anything Dev has ever shown playing defensive forward. Powell is a mid/forward and a good player in a poor team, he's better than Dev. Roberts is a flanker, plays a different game to Dev.

Mead and Dev are very similar players, but Mead has had more of a look in at Port. When he has had a run, he's shown more composure than Dev.

Some of those other players are kids, in their first or second year. They're being picked for what they'll be in a few years time, just as much as what they'll contribute this round.

I think Big O will ruck maybe 60-70% of time as he is a weapon around the park too. When Darcy is down in the forward line, just has to bring it to ground and let your smalls destroy us like the GF. We are terrible at defending once the ball hits the deck. Taking nothing away from Ah Chee and Lohman but we made them look like Cyril Rioli and Eddie Betts in the GF.
Cyril Rioli and Eddie Betts. Who are they?

How about going back to the original discussion. Each clubs perceived best 22, without injuries.

Bottom line is, he has missed the boat. Clubs won't play him - and stifle the development of a young player with more potential. Shoulda gone home last year.

Every team has injuries or other issues with players.

My original post was that Dev would get a game in most teams.

Nothing about best 22 or why some players were being played.

My off the cuff comment assumed he'd get 12-14 games at say 12 + clubs

And that's how I see it.

He would've probably been a regular player every week at 4 or 5 clubs.

Just my opinion.

Clubs can only afford to play one player like Dev in their best 22.

As much as I backed the player in, Dev's lack of composure in tight and poor kicking skills at senior level, really limit his use on the field.

He looks lost at times, but I believe a lot of that is he has been asked to play roles he's not really suited for, and doesn't have a natural feel for the game outside of the midfield contest.

As BuntonRules said, developing teams will/should prioritise higher quality youth over a player like Dev. And good teams shouldn't have a place in their best 22 for a player like Dev.

Yes Dev might be higher up the depth chart at a few other clubs this year. But those clubs are going to prioritise the draft at the end of the year, over picking up a delisted free agent.

WC signed Graham last off season, that and West Coasts draft pretty much killed any chance of Dev heading home in the future.

Well in essence I can't disagree with most of that except to say if Dev was able to play consistently at a higher level at a lesser club instead of being a stop gap player at the Lions he may have been a more polished and rounded player than he is now.

To add to that I don't think he's any great player and he's limited but there are lots of depth players who have 8-10 year careers and play 80+ games.

I agree with that. That goes for many players. Need to land in the right situation. For Dev, covid killed his first, best chance.

Not to many midfielders amongst those perennial depth players. Usually KPP's.
