Swans squad for Saturday

SYDNEY v COLLINGWOOD, Newcastle, 1.30pm

SYDNEY: Barry Hall, Nick Davis, Jarrad McVeigh, Ben Mathews, Ryan O'Keefe, Craig Bolton, David Spriggs, Ben Fixter, Paul Williams, Stuart Maxfield, Nic Fosdike, Adam Schneider, Stephen Doyle, Darren Jolly, Tadhg Kennelly, Heath James, Leo Barry, Jude Bolton, Matthew Nicks, Sean Dempster, Jason Ball, Mark Powell, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Brett Kirk, Amon Buchanan, Tim Schmidt, Adam Goodes, Paul Bevan.

Notable excusions - O'Loughlin, Ablett, Saddington, Schauble and Crouch.

Notice none of the rookie listed players are getting a game which would point towards the slim chance of any of them being promoted at this stage. Would think that most of the senior players playing this week will make up 21 of the 22 spots for Round One, with O'Loughlin the only one likely to come in for Rd1, with Saddo, Schaubs and Crouch to come in over during the following month.

Hopefully we can get a win to build some confidence going into Round One and the Hawks.

Anyone know how Nick Malceski is going? I know he had a knee op, one of his cousins is a mate of mine, he isn't a footy fan but would like to know if he is going to make it or not, I haven't seen enough of him to make the call?

Full tilt against Pies: Roos

Sydney coach Paul Roos will be using Saturday afternoon’s practice game with Collingwood in Newcastle as a full dress rehearsal for round one against Hawthorn in terms of setting up their personnel, game style and preparation.

Adam Goodes, Nick Davis and Lewis Roberts-Thomson have been brought into the team at the expense of Tim Schmidt, Heath Grundy and Mark Powell, while Jarred Moore comes in for Matthew Nicks (illness).

But as many as four positions are still up for grabs for the start of the home-and-away season.

“We will be trying to give everyone really good game time for round one,” Roos said.

"The guys who have been up-and-running for a couple weeks will play most of the game so they could get a really good final hit-out, but it will be a bit of a balancing act with Goodes and Nick Davis, the first game players.

"Generally speaking you don’t experiment much now, your experimentation is over and you are just trying to fine turn for round, but there are still a few players who need to have a good game on the weekend to confirm their standing, or to jump ahead of somebody else.

"There are probably 18 spots (taken) and there are probably eight left for the last four so that is probably roughly where it is at the moment."

Roos refuses to jump too far ahead on selections for the 27 March encounter at the SCG, preferring to concentrate on getting his players fit and in good form.

However, he admits the club remains on track for the season opener given they have not gained much ground on the players they hoped would be fit to play the Hawks, nor suffered any injuries of the guys who are fit.

Roos confirmed full-back Andrew Schauble will not be ready to play Hawthorn, while defensive midfielder Jared Crouch remains a 50/50 prospect.

I was interested to see how Nick Davis went.

He was my favourite player when he was with us. I have followed him closely the last few years, as I thought he would develop into a really special player. He has had his injury worries the last 2 years, but when he is firing, it's great to watch.

I recall when you guys played Brisbane early last year, he kicked a few but then got injured. How is he travelling nowadays?

apparently nicky D is at the fittest he has been in his career. so i guess that is sought of encouraging, depending on how fit that means he is.
