Seeing my recent attempt at hilarity, the SFA Pageant, fell flat on it's arse, maybe it's time to take a leaf out of Its Manbearpig book and get Super Cereal. So let's take a look at some minor suggestions that could improve the competition going forward.
MATCH COMMENTARY
In season 18 the simmer at the time, Logger , put out a request to for players to submit additional lines of commentary. He got a generous response with the commentary taking on a fresh look for the remainder of the season.
For example, here's some additions from the season 18 Grand Final:
1 : 12.13 {rW} - flaps and raven echo claim the mark. The umpire doesn't believe either of them.
1 : 14.16 {rBP} - Stop... tasmanlvr time. They can't touch him.
1 : 16.43 {CHF} - Shadow Man FROM THE HEAVENS. What a hanger.
1 : 16.49 {CHF} - Smartys Power might be in trouble with the tribunal after that tackle on Shadow Man. Play on is the call.
1 : 17.22 {CHF} - tugga lined up Danger in Texas and missed. Danger in Texas just laughs and takes a bounce.`
1 : 18.42 {rFP} - This could win him the car...
1 : 19.58 {lHBF} - Atrocious kick. Not even kilometre perfect.
1 : 21.15 {CHF} - Only a handful of players could have kicked that. Shadow Man isn't one of them.
1 : 22.17 {rW} - raven echo kept his eyes on the ball right up until the moment it falconed him.
1 : 22.35 {lW} - flaps gets poked and punched and possession.
and that's from the first quarter, with some other great lines in the other 3 quarters.
I think these were lost when we went to the simmer committee in Season 19, but it wouldn't be bad to see the competition collaborate once again to add some extra nuggets to the commentary.
Now, while on the subject of commentary, and the commentary elephant in the room : making the sim more gender friendly. The effort was as awkward as a 13 year old Broken at a Blue Light disco and it's fair to say it missed the target however, with a bit more care, you could have dropped the pronouns altogether to make the same point.
i.e.
1 : .24 {rW} - Cactus_ looking for a lead.
1 : .28 {C} - They involve MKMatty in the play.
1 : .3 {rW} - They get a handpass to Cactus_.

1 : .4 {rHBF} - kane249 sizes the options in front of them.

1 : 1.28 {lW} - Argas Tuft nearly got done for running too far but they remember to bounce at last.

and so on... with the amount of people who are good at words and stuff in this competition, surely we could nail the execution of this and make it something special.
HALL OF FAME
Currently the Hall of Fame is voted on by the committee, made up of the captains of the Sweet FA. I'm not convinced that's the best way to go about it. Looking at this seasons captains list we have captains who have barely played 3 seasons yet they're expected to decide who made a big impact on the history of the game? Do they know enough about who came before them, are they likely to defer to the more tenured (or outspoken) captains and the like?
This seasons captains group they average 117 games (roughly 7 seasons) and that's generous due to the high games totals of Frankston Rover and fitzroybowiedog
There currently exists a group of players who would be in a better position to decide on who is Hall of Fame worthy. I'm speaking of the 17 currently listed players who are in the Sweet F.A. Hall of Fame. This group averages 310 games (20 seasons) and contains previous admins, captains and significant contributors to the league over the years and, I think it's fair to say, are probably in a better position to determine who is worthy.
STATE OF ORIGIN
Maybe I need the unpopular puffin meme here, but State of Origin is dead. When the league only had one season a year, and nothing else happening on the board, the SOO concept served as a fun addition to the competition - as did the long departed preseason competition.
Now the competition has quick season turnarounds with some years having two seasons, plus charity games, much more activity across the board and the Club Room. As a result the need for a little extra to build the board community has been taken over by other means which State of Origin no longer needs to fill. Let it go.
I could be off base here, but I think there's something here for Cloud_ to work with and I'll open the floor to other suggestions.
