Also in meaningless statistics, Melbourne Storm the biggest NRL club, theoretically.
It's not entirely meaningless.

Swans and Giants' sponsorship real estate (logos on jumpers etc.) actually gets sold for a decent price compared to other team, because of that theoretical "reach" to more fans. But of course, Collingwood and Tigers would sell more merchandise etc. than the Swans.

I doubt the price they flog their merchandise has got anything to do with how many non-AFL fans claim they support the Swans.

What companies pay in terms of sponsorship/advertising has largely got to do with how much of an audience their products reach, with the ratings they get on 7mate I am not sure it would be at a premium. Sponsors don't give a s**t about Collingwood, they just care about how much airtime their advertising gets.

This is from 2016:

Sponsorship revenue:
  • Sydney – $18,566,389
  • Collingwood – $17,024,436
  • Geelong – $16,079,494 (includes fundraising)
  • Hawthorn – $14,947,662
  • Adelaide – $14,642,251 (includes fundraising)
  • Carlton – $13,623,204
  • Essendon – $12 ,493 ,197
  • Richmond – $10,575,059
  • GWS – $9,984,172
  • Western Bulldogs – $9,684,219
  • Brisbane – $9,599,634
  • Melbourne – $8,916,023
  • North Melbourne – $8,559,657
  • Gold Coast – $8,010,663 (includes “supply rights” income)
  • West Coast – $7,934,503
  • Fremantle – $5,885,937
  • St Kilda – $5,838,157
Sydney's greater "reach" even if that doesn't include hardcore fans clearly has some value.

Just in a point of accuracy, those figures aren’t pure ‘sponsorship’ only figures. In some cases they include ‘hospitality’ and other commercial partner revenues. Each club classifies and includes different revenues under different classifications. It’s rarely comparing exact apples and apples.

Any figures which suggest that West Coast's sponsorship value is less than North Melbourne and the Dees would seem rather dubious.

what clubs bundle into "sponsorship" differs from club to club

dont worry about it that much

Asking people in Sydney if they casually follow a Sydney sports team is like asking an Australian who they go for in the cricket.

If anyone asks, in the NRL, I support Melbourne Storm.

I've never been to a game, never bought any merch, and probably wouldn't know any of the players if I tripped over them.

But according to the Morgan poll, I'd be a Storm supporter.

hahahhahahahaha are you still going on about roy morgan polls :drunk: I love how Richmond lives rent-free in your head.
The poll is based on 15,000 people from 14+ No one takes roy morgan seriously except you it seems. How do you get sucked into all this. You started a thread on a 15K survey LOL

Well 100K+ says we are the biggest and the Eagles have joined us and leapfrogged the pies. Oh there's Collingwood on 76K
See the graph below I've underlined the most important part OFFICIAL and Not some 15K survey "average 2K poll" around each state lmfaoooo

Swings and roundabouts, IMO Collingwood/Richmond/Essendon and Carlton have the ability to be no1 in Melbourne depending on circumstances, Carlton have been uncompetitive for a long time, when they hit top 4 again their membership base will explode, for exactly the same reason Richmonds did.

I like the result as a Swan's fan but any poll result is based purely on the question.
Any conclusions have to be based on the exact wording of the question and the wording can mean different things to different people.
To me, a supporter is somebody who active supports a team starting with attending.
To me, a fan is somebody who would like to be a supporter but for some reason cannot be.
Some people are fanatics, or rabid supporters, which confuses the the tag somewhat.
To me, a follower is someone who just follows the fortunes of a team.
Sydney is full of Swans followers and NRL followers.
Melbourne is full of supporters.
