That used to happen in the UK ie all pubs shut at 11pm so everyone left the high streets at the same time which caused problems. It was a good argument for deregulating licensing hours.

Even getting a cab late at night in Melbourne was never easy. What transport is now round the clock? Trams and trains?

Buses are involved as is coaches into Geelong as well.

Whats the story with Uber in Melbourne? Has it taken off? Last time I was in Melbourne there didnt seem to be that many about. You can imagine those who paid a fortune for taxi licenses being extremely against it.

Yep has take off, friends and my family prefer it especially for teenage kids on a night out.
 
If they want to get rid of the lockout laws in Sydney, protest the lock laws be enforced at Crown. Then big business will get on the phone to Baird and tell him to get back in his place. This is more about cornering the market than saving lives IMO. Those people that are being punished here are the batters. Meanwhile Packer and co are laughing all the way to the bank.

The casino should also be subject to the lock out laws. "One in........all in"


what a massive free kick to the casino. Not only is it not subject to the lock out, those that want to carry on have to go to the casino to do so. That's corruption!

Growing would be the way I would describe it. It seems more and more are trying it and end up happy with the service so they use it.

Haven't used it personally yet.
 
The biggest issue with the lockout laws isn't actually their implementation.

The issue has always been licensing times.

For whatever reason, pubs and nightclubs in many cases have been granted liquor licences until 7am. In Melbourne, it is common place to see nightclub queues of some depth well after midnight. What this has meant is that there is a lot of people out and about at that time and through the early hours of the morning.

This is no doubt putting strain on hospital emergency departments, police and security companies in terms of crowd management, injuries and so on.

It's hugely popular amongst people my age (18-30 age group). Most people I know only ever use taxis now if a maxi is needed or Uber has a price surge at that time period.

People still lurk around Melbourne's streets late at night, but compared to some of the stories I've heard from older generations throughout my life about the difficulty of getting a cab late at night, I've seen no such issues. I've found I can walk out of any venue at any time and easily get access to a cab, uber, train etc.

Wouldn't surprise me if a lot of the Kings Cross violence was related to that. The fact that the casino is very violent always tends to make me sway towards that thinking. Casino cab ranks are always a cluster*.

Its not that long ago it was a nightmare getting a cab in Melbourne in places like Fitzroy Street. Very painful.

People going out, after midnight???

That's outrageous!!!

Seriously, who cares, people should be able to go out whenever they want.

Punish the arseholes who do the wrong thing, leave the rest of us alone.

I know right. Reality is that even on the weekends most people do other things during the day and socialise at night time. Unless you're eating dinner with those people too, most people don't start drinking till 8-9 and before you know it the clock hits midnight.

As a Victorian I am just stunned by these laws. Most Saturday nights by midnight I've barely left the pub or bar and am only just on the way to a club or other place.
