Just proves even more why they broke up. One has her life together and knows exactly where she’s going, the other is still a teenager mentally. I really hope he learns from this. The kid is talented and it would be sad to see him not part of AFL football, but there are so many boys/men out there that would do anything for the chance Sydney’s been given.

On Stack I will say there are just some people who can’t follow some rules. As a player(much lower level) I could never turn up on time for warmups etc. Ever. It annoyed people, and especially martinet types. But I was not disruptive to the group, and was normally probably better prepared overall than just about anyone else once the ball was in play, certainly better prepared than average.

As a coach/captain/selector/mentor I have always said I don’t care what clothes you wear to training or what else you do, or what rules you do or don’t follow, I just care how switched on you are when the ball is in play. And that you don’t distract others in the group from the job at hand or from their preparation. Of course if you do something completely abhorrent away from the club then the club needs to protect its reputation, but what Stack has done here doesn’t fall into that category for mine.

One thing to ponder amongst other considerations. If it is the last 1/4 of a Grand Final, and the game is on the line, would a fully switched on S Stack be of value? My guess is he would come right into his own in this sort of situation. A player who is capable of great deeds at times like that can be worth his weight in gold. Do you really want to have dumped him because he couldn’t follow COVID rules in December?

These are some of the questions the club will need to answer and they will be in a better position than us to know the right answer. So you expect they get it right.

I too think the club will make a good decision on this.

I do think they have more things to consider, however.

I get that as a coach/captain/etc your primary concern was on field performance, but I think AFL clubs have issues around public perception which can really hit the club if it goes on to impact sponsorships and memberships.

There's just no doubt that a switched on SS would be of value. The question is always going to be -- what's stopping the kid from throwing the "on" switch and is it something we can reasonably hope he will do.

I really, really hope so -- but I can't help thinking things aren't going to turn out well.
 
As a bit of a passing comment, I've been reading Konrad's books on our 2019 and 2020 season.

In the later he talks about the Stack and CCJ incident and it's interesting how "chill" the club seems to be about what happened last year.

Peggy O'Neil in particular spoke about how the average supporter is out of the loop (my words) when it comes to knowing about a player's issues and how the club is positioned to deal with them.

I mention it only to make the point that the club perception on this isn't one I'd like to put money on. Their preferred attitude seems to be that everybody makes mistakes, but you focus on the good and do everything you can to help players maximize their potential -- which is something I really like about our club, I have to say.

I have no idea how this will now play out in Stack's case but I reckon he's fortunate he's at Richmond. I doubt I'd give him even the tiniest chance of coming back from here if he was anywhere else.

I suppose we'll hear from the club after he's fronted the magistrate.

True, but of course otherwise he should just be dumped now.
Depends on how well he can convince club et al that he is worth persisting with...

All perfectly valid points. The club just needs to weigh all these things up but it sounds like they already have.

This is the big qn. As far as I know, [PLAYERCARD]Sam Lloyd[/PLAYERCARD] retiring freed up a list spot for the Dogs. Stack would have to resign for a list spot to open up. Its too late for another club to pick him up I think salary probably not an issue cos it'd be a rookie wage replacing a rookie wage.
Would Stack quit? Probably not. I don't think we sack him. I reckon we're stuck with each other for 21.

Seriously though it is not like Stack and several mates are setting upon some innocent soul. That footage in itself casts no shame on Stack.

He would do well to heed the wise words of Adam Gilchrist though, when asked what shot he would look to play if he needed 6 to win from the last ball of the innings:

“I wouldn’t get into that situation."

I have NO sympathy for him anymore he’s had plenty of opportunities. After all 17 other clubs turned their back on him. We’ve gone above and beyond for him.

My sympathies lie with all the other kids that just missed out on a spot and are working their buts off to get on a list

You talk of opportunity, something Stack has had NONE since a kid, as opposed to the kids put through scholarship etc because they come from good homes, or even more likely, father son. There are hundreds of kids each year who miss out, plenty with the same talent and application as those that get drafted. 70% of kids draftees come from private schools these days, so a bit weird to be discussing privilege/opportunities.

We have gone above and beyond, and that is why Richmond have been so successful, because we go outside the norm. I hope we stick with it, it hasn't cost us anything yet.

I'd be surprised if he was off our list now, as it would be a bad decision from his end to walk away from his contract, at a minimum his suspension will likely be extended to mid-season. From there virtually impossible to get games this year I'd think. That really just leaves it up to stacky, if he comes back and trains the house down all season knowing he's not a chance at selection, he's certainly a chance for a one-year extension. If he throws in the towel then that's that. I hope he can sort himself out but not overly confident unfortunately

He would have to have breached the contract to be able to end it. And in both Gold Coast & in Perth Stack wasn't charged with assault. G/coast incident had consequences for the AFL season and given 10 weeks. but the Perth incident is low level quarantine breach. I'd be guessing another club ban. Up to the leadership group. He might be forced to do the quarantine under heavy supervision
Thank god CCJ is behaving, cos we really need him in 21. Stack just fit would be a bonus

Couple of things from this.

Can't blame CCJ for this

WA does not seem to agree with him.

Alcohol helps him lose control and do reckless things

He is inclined to get in to confrontational episodes and fights under the influence

Does alcohol severely affect his judgement or did he make another bad call in WA before he got on the booze?

He isn't doing a very good job of it now is he? We have already proven in our last 2 flags we don't need him. Id rather give another kid a chance who wants to be there.
