The Herald Sun

Sydney have appointed young maestro Tarkyn_24 as coach of their team of living legends. Tarkyn_24 is a much hyped up coach, considering the only team he has coached was his sister's under 11 basketball team before him. Sydney, however, are positive they snapped up a quality coach for the future, and intend to teach him well. Tarkyn_24 specializes in recruiting and trading.

Pre Season Death

The AFL has decided to break from a late tradition and in 2002 will not have a pre-season competition and just jump straight into the real stuff in Round 1.

The AFL hierarchy decided on this cause of action after many players were being injured in the matches.

Richmond Tigers vs Collingwood Magpies

The action was bound to start somewhere, and for Collingwood and Richmond it was the start of a new season, and Collingwood were hoping, a new way of life. However, history seemed to count for more than what the Pies offered, as the Tigers danced a merry dance around a slow and clearly struggling Magpies squad. Bowden was instrumental in his team's victory, rebounding from 50 and collectin just under 40 touches. Buckley fought hard but he wasn't enough.

St.Kilda Saints vs Carlton Blues

Carlton looked to put a fairly disappointing 2001 behind them in their Round 1 clash vs struggling St. Kilda. What happened made them look mediocre, and worried club officials. St. Kilda got the jump on the Blues, pushing out to a match winning lead. The Carlton squad just never threatened. Captain Koutafides was the only battler for Carlton as St. Kilda ran home.

St. Kilda may have emerged victors, but it wasn't with a clean sheet of injuries. Ruckman Peter Everitt suffered an ankle injury early in the game. His sprained ankle will keep him out of business for 5 weeks. It was interesting to note, his replacement, Jason Blake, kicked 4 majors. Hamill and Hudgeton both suffered corked thighs and ended the game on the bench. Both are expected to play next week. Aussie Jones has a sprained ankle, suffered late whilst chasing Lance Whitnall. He will miss 3 weeks

Lucas Down, Bombers Lose Star

SCOTT Lucas has just recieved the horrifying news that he will miss 14 weeks of the AFL season with cruciate knee damage incurred in the victory over Geelong.

Lucas before the clash

Lucas felt the injury and had a few minutes of complete agony while he lied on the ground waiting for medical treatment.

Lucas incurred the injury whilst chasing Geelong's Darren Milburn while Geelong tried to rebound from the Bombers 50.

After seeing the injury, and getting his kick away to Kelly, Milburn, in a display of sportsmanship, rushed to Lucas' side to ensure he was OK.

Lucas was shattered that he wasn't available until Round 16 at the earliest, but feels extremely lucky.

"Some blokes have those injuries, spanning a year, year and a half on the (side)lines."

"I'm just lucky it should be a relative short time in comparison to most."

In other news, David Spriggs will miss two weeks with a fractured cheekbone.
