Sydney Swans 2019 Season

Swannies in 2019?

  • Sink. They've been up consistently for a long time. Their time is up. Longmire's one dimensional

  • Swim. They're like an old war horse that know's how to get it done. Still a dangerous side.

  • Staying afloat. Will make the finals, but won't have a say in serious matters in 2019

What's with putting Heeney in the midfield, watching him play really well, then shifting him out of the midfield?

Does he lack fitness?

That midfield of Kennedy, Jack, Parker is just not getting it done anymore. Kennedy and Parker have had great careers but they've slipped 10% or so in their output and Horse still seems to rely on them way too much.

I think we're done for a while now. Up until now we've at least been able to rely on a very stingy defence but even that's gone now.

Our list management strategy was to try and win a flag with Franklin in the first 5 years of his deal and we couldn't do it so there's probably some pain ahead.

Swans have a tough road ahead

Richmond at Marvel
GWS at the SGS
Lions GABBA
Dons SGC

Then North at Marvel who despite being 0-3 could also be tricky. They pushed the Lions and the Hawks the last two weeks. Then after that

Collingwood SCG
Geelong Kardinia
WCE SCG
Hawthorn SCG

Of course if they win their next two games our tune would be very different. They're just looking average atm. On the positive they were in the contest in the last quarters of every loss they've suffered so far.

They need to score.

Wow. They could realistically win only 1 or 2 of those next 8.

Eagles hold their 2nd rounder as well!:cool:

If they lost Franklin the wooden spoon becons.

we have had a bloody good run, so if we fall down and even contend for the spoon thats just life, teams fall up and down.

What annoys me is the way we are trying to play is just so clearly ineffective, no way we are a contender the list needs an overhaul, but the style is making us even worse than we should be IMO

They look a bit banged up. The talent is there but the competition is very even and slipping a little can mean a big slide in ladder positions.

Wouldn’t count them out long term. They are a club that has managed to reset without completely bottoming out before. They have enough building blocks there.

I get the aging list in transition - it is simple. But why the repeated failure at the SCG - it looks to a change in game plan or is it just the list?

The only way the Swans MIGHT either force Longmire to change or to actually sack him is if crowds at the SCG drop dramatically, and why should fans to go a game where not only will they watch their team lose but that their coach refuses to acknowledge any problems and refuses to change anything. Clubs have to sell their fans hope, and Longmire is most certainly not doing that.

Short Memories - 2017 everyone wrote them off when they went 0-6. Went on to win 14/16 from then on to make finals.
They are a well drilled side that still have good players across all lines. Just need to find a game plan that can match it with the other sides.
Not looking forward to Swans V Dockers though. That could be the lowest score line ever....

Without Heeney and Mills in there I strongly believe that the Swans have one of the weakest midfields in the competition. Kennedy is better than last year, but still on the decline, Parker is one of the most overrated players in the AFL in terms of reputation compared to output, Hewett is just a tagger, a very good tagger but still just a tagger, Papley is a forward that Longmire has decided to play in the midfield for some reason, Jack is toast and players like Cunningham and Florent are more outside players.

The only midfield positive we have at the moment is Jones.

2017 though we had players out to return who could make a reasonable difference

Horse is a bloody good coach, but he’s not adapting his game plan. It’s just too much of a good thing for the Swans. You can’t keep replacing elite players with rookies and stay in contention. He’s not getting enough out of his key players now, which means it’s probably time to go. Parker should be in his peak but he’s just not doing it.

Have been teetering on the edge of the cliff for a while , but franklin’s brilliance has kept them afloat. But they have finally fallen off and are heading for the lower reaches of the ladder. Going to finish bottom 4, will be lucky to win 6 games. Slow midfield, over-reliance on an aging superstar to kick a winning score, and the most unimaginative coach in the league . Need to start from scratch , build a new midfield around d heeney mills florent etc
