We delisted two more than the minimum we had to.

And even if the club thought he offered better depth than other options, it would be a very selfish thing to do to redraft him ahead of another club that thinks it can offer him significant senior team opportunities.

fair enough I told you I didnt know how it worked, and I agree with the point you make but I will hate seeing him run around in a GWS jumper.

Why? I don't hate seeing Schneider or Dempster running around for the Saints, or Monty for the Lions, or Hall for the Dogs, and won't hate seeing Johnston at Adelaide. Only one I do hate is Jolly but that's because he forced our hand.

I reckon the way our list sits at the moment, we will have two live picks at the draft (43 and 61) and then we will use 97 to upgrade Nathan Gordon. That will leave one spot left on our list and I reckon there's a high chance that the Swans will try their luck in the Pre-Season draft. I honestly reckon there is quite a lot of talent to be drafted amongst the delisted players such as McCarthy, Fevola (I guess that's an entirely separate debate) and Urquhart.

Just a quick FYI - one of the leading player agents in WA has said he rates Mitchell above Coniglio and would have him 2nd after Patton. I don't quite agree with him but thought some here might be interested. If we didn't have Mitchell and were using pick 21 I would quite like us to target Shane Kersten who is another local I rate highly. Max Duffy and Brad Hill are a couple of locals who should be available late, and have a bit of talent. Marley Williams isn't horrible either

Wouldn't mind McCarthy, however not a huge fan of getting Fev, better to let White/Walsh sink or swim than screw around with our forward setup more.

Finally Urquhart is a big no from me, he has absolutely no tank, and doesn't have the fitness for AFL football.

No to some North reject, pretty sure he was one of the youngsters they were all talking up on BF a couple of years ago.

Fev is the only one who would have an instant impact, but then we'd have White, Reid, Walsh, Morton, Spangher and Fevola all as forward options. That's too many.

I believe that thread one of the best haha. But I will be careful in my predictions into the future now.
It is a favourite of mine. But its closely followed by all the Sydney threads with people saying Meredith, Currie etc were going to be stars

Saying one person is a star over someone else is the pinnacle though, just saying someone will be a star is not so bad :thumbsu:

I find it hard to hate Jolly. He went home for family reasons and besides we did ok because of it. He forced us to go after Mummy who is younger, costs less in our cap and cost bugger all in pics. And IMO is a better ruckman.

The fact. We wasted the pick we got for him is the only downside.

He went home because his wife has his balls in her purse, and he held us hostage by only wanting to go to the Pies so we couldn't even shop around and get the best deal. Yeah I begrudge him for that.

Plus without him the Magpies would still be going through their premiership drought. The fact he forced us to help those pricks to a flag is ****ing annoying.

Don't hate him. We would all do the same thing. We would all do what was best for ourselves.

Besides it is the final result that counts.

I personally wouldn't swap him for the mummy. If you go to the pies site they have a thread going on what sort of player they need. The Mummy's name keeps coming up.

He went "home" and gave us only one option to deal with, Collingwood.

If he'd told us he wanted to go to a Melbourne club and he didn't mind which one, or maybe just ruled out one or two of his least favourites, then he still would have gotten to Melbourne, but the competition from different clubs would have driven his price higher. We'd have got more than 14 and 46 for him.

That is only helpful if we were to use the pics well. Our history is not good in that area.

Nope. If I was leaving the club that had made a huge effort to accomodate my needs (higher salary which forced Schneider and Dempster out), and gave me self-belief (became a starting 22 at the Swans and won a flag) I'd show them a bit of respect and give them as many options to deal with as possible, especially in a 9-team town like Melbourne.

Irregardless of how we use picks, pick 9 is better than pick 14 purely because we have 5 more options to pick from. We got Rohan at 6 for instance, and look how good he has been. We could have got a decent player out of it, etc.

I wasn't talking about picks in particular. We could have got a player instead of 46, etc. Anyway, more is more, what we do with it is another matter.

We ontraded 46 (plus another very late pick) to get McGlynn, so we did get a player for him indirectly. Had we not got pick 46 we might have been forced to use pick 38 to secure McGlynn - and I doubt I need to remind anyone who we picked up with pick 38 in the draft.

I very much doubt we would have got anything better from another club had Jolly been less set on the Pies. The only other Melbourne club that was in desparate need of a ruckman was Hawthorn, and they had decided that Burgoyne was a more pressing need for them.

For me, the fact that we were forced to go and find Mumford as a result of the Jolly departure renders everything else irrelevant. Best trade that the club has done since getting Hall (though the JPK trade is hot on its heels).

helping Jolly out helps our reputation as a team that looks after it's players, scoring brownie points for us from agents, players and teams.

Oh, I'm not arguing that the trade turned out really well for us, but that's not really the point. Jolly didn't know that. In the end, what we got from Collingwood was below Jolly's market value, and that was only possible because Jolly nominated Collingwood and only Collingwood. That had nothing to do with being homesick.

We can be thankful that things turned out the way they did, but that doesn't make Jolly's behaviour any less poor.

On that presumption and according to you, we should just give any player away that wants to leave and accept pick 99 as compensation as we wouldnt use a better pick, say a pick 9 very well.

I was obviously being a bit facetious.

IMO the jolly trade wasn't that far off the mark. The trades for kennedy, mummy and mcglynn I think were.

The big factor that none of us are privy to is the salaries of the players.

The question that I would ask is, did the difference in salary between what we paid for jolly and mummy allow us to pick up a Kennedy or a mcglynn.

I know none of us will know the answer for sure, so I am happy to leave it up to the list managers.

Anyway, makes for a good discussion.
