Not the same as south Melbourne......though, in reality, given the main likelihood of north melbourne relocation, it could still turn out analogous
Yes its not South melbn, I know their was a lot of animosity when SM left, I'm told by footy friends in Melbn & Sydney that things changed slowly after 1996 GF loss. So I believe all the Swans supporters are more comfortable with the situation. Its about 'the bloods'. Its SM history is respected even though its now Sydney.

A NM move may end up like that in 50 years I suppose. remember Tassie is a mature footy state. Shoving NM here wouldn't gain huge support as most people would remain supporters of various clubs, sure some would by memberships, like with Hawthorn & NM now. Just token support. It'd take generations to develop properly. The current AFLW NM/Tas team is viewed with scepticism by a lot of people here.

Yes survey means very little. In reality if they only servey 14,000 people over 14 years only means nothing. The only way to look at supporter base numbers is through 2 criteria’s;

1) ave attendances in a 10 year period
2) ave membership over a 10 Year period

That is why Collingwood is regarded as the biggest club in the afl with Essendon 2nd, Richmond 3rd our of Victorian clubs.

In reality in terms of hard core fans West Coast are no.1 followed by Adelaide then Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond, hawthorn then Carlton ( Carlton lack of success has dropped them below hawthorn now imo)

Imo youre part of the way there, but not quite.

The reason the roy poll is rubbish ia because it measures interest, but doesnt weigh it. You go to the other extreme, excluding people who dont follow the game you want it followed.

Reality is its a variable scale

Do you "support" a team?

Do you watch them in tv, if so how often

Do you buy merch, if so how much

Do you attend games, if so how often

Do you have a membership, if so for how many games

Bingo!!!

Facebook likes, twitter and Instagram will tell you the biggest clubs are Collingwood, Essendon, hawthorn, Carlton and Richmond in that order
So what demographic do you think social media is mainly used by? Does that represent the best guess at a figure of support for AFL clubs?

Just when I think I may be wasting my life spending too much time on this forum, I think of the people who spend endless hours tabulating information to creative useless polls like this one.

Facebook in particular these days is used by almost all demographics so I would say is reasonably reliable in terms of gauging relative support.

I remember a few years ago facebook numbers came up and Collingwood and Essendon were number 1 and 2 then as well. I always found it strange how whenever one of them got 10k or so in front the other would magically find the 10k extra likes to edge ahead. Rinse and repeat.
Good to see it's still happening.

Similar to the Pies and their membership numbers lol

Any survey or statistic you could easily debate weather it is accurate or not! The more accurate thing to do would use all the surveys and stats you can and won’t the common themes
