I don't think the Tippett experiment was a total failure, but I wouldn't put him in any representative team apart 'most injury-prone'.

This board hasn't discussed Sam Reid nearly enough. Let's have a debate about him vs Tippett.

LRT needs to be included

I’m not going to get too invested in this...but if any of you leave out LRT I will hunt you down.

carry on

As much as it saddened me, I wasn't sure where to play him - was behind Richards, Grundy and Rampe as Key Defenders, and Tippett kicked 137 goals in his 74 games during the period making him a more desirable key forward option.

There have been times when it seems like we have expected Buddy to play FF and CHF simultaneously...

s**t that’s a good team. imaging that lining up next year...whoosh

If contribution to Sydney is the only thing in the criteria then Jetta needs to make everyones team.

No flag in 2012 without his season imo

McVeigh in the centre and Jude Bolton only on the bench?

If the criteria is football played from 2010-2019 then yes. Jude retired in 2013, although he was good in his final years, McVeigh has been a key figure in our side for the entire decade, premiership captain, had an All-Australian year. Early this decade he still had stints in the midfield.

Thanks, reasonable point re Bolton. Still not sure about McVeigh though.

Mitchell v Jude might be a debate.

Jude played 4 seasons that were very good for a player at the end of his career and played in the flag.

Mitchell played only 3 full seasons but was arguably a better player during his brief time.

Don't like the 50 game minimum. Means no Mitch "Mr September" Morton. ;)

Gee that is a beautiful list of players isn't it?

Going into a little more depth on my team

During this time frame we had 11 All Australian players

Adam Goodes (2011 - FP) => Forward
Ted Richards (2012 - CHB) => Defender
Josh Kennedy (2012 - INT, 2014 - C, 2016 - C) => Midfielder
Jarrad McVeigh (2013 - HBF) => Midfielder/Defender
Kieren Jack (2013 - HFF) => Midfielder
Dan Hannebery (2013 - INT, 2015 - W, 2016 - W) => Midfielder
Nick Smith (2014 - BP) => Defender
Nick Malceski (2014 - HBF) => Defender
Lance Franklin (2014 - FF, 2016 - CHF, 2017 - CHF, 2018 - CHF [c]) => Forward
Dane Rampe (2016 - BP) => Defender
Luke Parker (2016 - INT) => Midfielder/Forward

All of these players were really solid for a long time and had a significant body of work across the decade so I'd consider them locks in the team.

In terms of defenders, in the early half of the decade, we had the best defensive unit in the game, we routinely conceded the least points of any team. In 2012 our premiership year we had a group of 7 in; Ted Richards, Heath Grundy, Nick Smith, Nick Malceski, Marty Mattner, Rhyce Shaw, Alex Johnson.

Bar Johnson who hasn't played enough games to qualify, all of these guys are locks IMO, with the exception of Rampe none of the respective successors to these guys have shown themselves to be better players than them.

With the addition of Grundy, Shaw, and Mattner that's 14 in the team.

For the midfield group, I've already got Hannebery, Kennedy, Jack, McVeigh, Parker all locked in as mids. I have to add Ryan O'Keefe because it would be ridiculous to omit the Norm Smith Medallist. He was also an absolute beast in finals in the early part of the decade.

I think with the 15 I've mentioned there's going to be a pretty solid consensus, I reckon 95% of people on the board would include these 15 guys which is basically the entire defensive group and most of the midfield group.

With the ruck combination, it's very clearly going to be either both Mumford and Pyke or one of Mumford/Pyke. I have both in my team because I always felt that our best team dynamic was when we had two rucks whereby one was a capable forward target, and these two fit the bill the best given they were our premiership-winning ruck duo.

The forwards are the most contentious area, the only obvious picks I can see are Franklin at full forward and Goodes at centre half forward as he ended his career playing as a lead up target.

I think what I've realised is that we haven't actually gotten a lot of impressive forwards this decade outside of Franklin. Hence, I ended up picking mostly midfielders who are capable of kicking goals when they go forward - Parker/Jetta/McGlynn/Heeney, even Goodes is really a gun mid that got old. The only pure small forward that comes into the conversation is Papley and I think McGlynn is just a more complete player being almost as prolific a goal scorer and has the extra string of being able to play in the midfield win contested ball and clearances or tag as he showed in 2014.

There's a fair case for Tippett given he's statistically quite good, but given he was one of the main targets forward I'd expect him to kick a fair few goals. And while I remember him kicking goals, I just don't recall a lot of games where he's dragged us over the line.

Reid I just don't think he's ever been any more than a role player, although others may value his role within the premiership team and his versatility etc.

It's a much more even field with the forward line and anyone can quite easily justify selecting Tippett or Reid or Papley.

Finally, if you want to include a utility in the team I think there's only one option and that's LRT. Of the players in the list who can be considered a 'utility' we have Dean Towers, Sam Reid who's never really played a full game in defence, Aliir's been tried as a forward and not been effective. Only LRT has held down a best 22 position at either end of the ground. You could easily select him in a key defensive post - he was our full back in 2010, come 2011 and 2012 he's playing as a tall forward and chopping out in the ruck, and doing a good job at it - kicking 25 goals in our premiership year. Nobody else this decade matches him for versatility and effectiveness in multiple positions, so 'swingman', utility, Mr Fix-It whatever you want to call it, LRT owns that lane.
