Sydney Swans want GWS out of Sydney

Anyone want to compare the crowd growth in the Giants 15th year (compared to their first) to the Swans in their 15th year as well?

Pridham is a self serving idiot.
to be fair in their 14th/15th year rugby league was going through a civil war.

It's not really big enough though since there are 9 NRL clubs there too. GWS have the lowest attendance by a mile and are not financially viable without a subsidy from head office.

Moving to Canberra would be an option but I think the AFL will instead continue to spread the Giants thinner and have enough to paper over any cracks.
GWS crowd numbers in Sydney are what happens when you go about representing your area (western Sydney) in a half-arsed fashion from the outset, rather than absolutely full on.

This should have been so simple. The Giants get the Greater Western Sydney area, with Canberra having nothing to do with the club. The Swans then get the rest of Sydney, along with any supporters in the GWS area who don't wish to change clubs support.

Instead we get the mess we have now, which wouldn't have happened if the whole thing had been done properly in the first place.

Just to put this into perpective :

Two WA teams for a population in the 2-mills

Three teams in Sydney for a 5.5mill population is definitely do-able.
Perhaps.

But let's get the second team right first.

And we are nowhere near that stage.

Melbourne has a population around 5.4 million, does that equate to being able to support 2 more NRL Teams alongside the Storm?

Pretty much the same situation in terms of interest vs number of teams.

WA needs another team the most. Sell outs most weeks for both teams while every other state has a ton of spare seats.

It's not just raw population numbers otherwise GWS would be killing it. You need demand and it's just not there in a rugby state no matter how much you wish it was different.

Its also about whose running the show. We have people really bad at it.

Whether Pridham likes it or not, in a still developing market like Sydney he has a wider responsibility than just to his club.

His responsibility ends with his club, he's not there to make love to the other 17 (will be 18 clubs). If there's a financial bonus for it, he's negligent to not campaign for it.

We are not there to help a rival club, that's not the Swans role. That's the AFL's role and your own club. Blame GWS for the ridiculous branding (Greater Western...um what...you are playing in Homebush, since when is that Greater West) and don't even get me started on the Battle of the Bridge nonsense.

Club only stuff the community eh?

Olympic park not Homebush.

I may not be a fan of the Battle of the Bridge but at least its promotion.

Yeah i got nothing on the Greater rubbish....

Personally I'm not happy about 8 other teams in my city. Not sure there's anything the AFL can do about it though.
Can we merge then? at this stage we just need to swap out the Red sash or the yellow sash?

Hey its not a 8 team merger but at least it bumps the number down

I wasn't saying that.

I was saying he has a wider responsibility to the game here. I assumed that people would work that out.

He can hate the Giants all he likes but he has to consider the welfare of the game in what he says and does.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

That's not his role one bit. His role is to improve the Swans, that's it. You don't become a CEO and think..'hey gotta improve my rival'. Heck no.

His only role is the Swans community, not another clubs community. His job is to increase his reach for the Swans, and the crows say he is. Look he has a mouth but in this case, no issue. Have more an issue with his whinge about the academies but that's for another thread.

Fair Olympic Park it's still not Greater Western lol

Again, I'm not saying that.

You really are a bad faith poster at times. This is one of them.

I think multiple things are true:

  • Sydney Swans have no right to demand a monopoly over a city of 5 million people
  • GWS needs to engage with Western Sydney better than they currently are, and that probably starts by severing their ties with Canberra (it's like going for seconds when you haven't even finished your main course)
  • Canberra deserves to be Team #20
