Going to be struggle. Either we will win in a close one or Sydney will get up by 5-8 goals. I know thats not the norm, but our side is clearly a different one that Sydney have encountered in the epics.

One big advantage for us is the venue, if it was at the SCG, we would get smashed.

Expect to see a different forward setup from the first 3 weeks.

Kennedy to come in. If Cox is out, then Lynch will be rucking and of course McKinley is yet to play the Swans.

Might surprise you, but I doubt it

with what WCE is going through re injuries to Glass, Cox, Lecras etc, structural issues and senior players not performing enough, it is only fair to say that you guys start fav. and why not - you have barry hall scoring goals and your new game plan is working wonders for you.

Amongst all afl teams, I may dare to say, WCE fans respect your mob the most. Having said that, I only hope it to be a close contest.............for the sake of our rivalries

Go Eagles!

I never doubted the Eagles anyways, with all this tension between the two clubs, how can you ever let your guard down? Its going to be down the wire for sure.

Sydney will start warm favourites and deservedly so, but all this talk in the media of the Eagles being in huge trouble is a bit overblown and typical of the sort of extrapolations and forecasts that we usually see early in a season (in the past similar things have been said about Sydney and they have proved to be premature). As Worsfold pointed out in his press conference, it was only a 15 minute burst in the 2nd quarter in which Freo kicked 5 goals (3 to Pavlich) that cost us the game. The margin was only 14 points and the game was up for grabs until deep into the 4th quarter. The week before against the Crows, we had 2 shocking quarters and other than that the game was very even. If we have a similar mental lapse against Sydney then we will get done, no doubt about it. But if the Eagles are switched on for the whole game then it will go down to the wire once again. No one gave us any chance in Round 1 last year without Cox, Cousins, Embley and Hansen. This week will be no different.

Will Cox play? Probably, after all he did play for a further 100 minutes after incurring the injury on Saturday so it can't be too bad. Minor ligament damage and nothing that a good shot of cortizone won't fix.
This guy seems to have a decent opinion about his team and why not have faith. Sydney tend to under perform in the games they are expected to win so I look at West Coast with a lot of caution. In fact this may be the best test so far of the youngsters stepping up for another good performance. There are still errors in our game and West Coast can capitalise. I guess the doubt about easy victories stems from the fantastic contests we've all been treated to between these teams.

A good start by the Swans against WC for a change might be the ticket.

I mentioned this on the WC board. If we let them get a 4-5 goals to 1 head start, we could be chasing tail all night. Sydney must strangle the Eagles mentally, play the game on our terms and make them come up with ways to stop it.

The Swans actually haven't played WC with close to a full list of fit players for years. And we haven't beaten them since the QF in 2006 - a game where we also had a plethora of key injuries going into the game.

Despite this, they've rarely been far ahead of us. This time, we have no real excuses for performing below par - not even the old "slow start to the season" excuse.

My prediction: we're due! :thumbsu:

did you see our team round 1 2007,
we had cox judd cousins embley out just to name a few so we havent exactly had our best team on the park the whole time either.

and to the comment above yours kerr is clear to play and hansen will prob get dropped for the fridge (josh kennedy)

The Eagles have had some players out, some big names too. But fresh players have always been in their place, and the Eagles have had excellent depth in recent years. Meanwhile half of our senior list has usually been carrying injuries in most of our recent classics - including the 2005 GF.

As for round one 2007, I had no doubts Sydney would struggle in that game. Pundits seemed to look at the team lists on paper and make their decisions. Although most of our senior players were in the team, they barely had a game behind them in the pre-season. And like most years we struggled for form for most of the first month. Even Richmond almost beat us, and they barely won a game all year. Yes it was a wonderful effort by the Eagles under duress. But I actually thought the one point loss wasn't too bad an effort by Sydney.

However, our team is looking much sharper than usual for the first month in 2008. And unlike the last 3 years almost all of our senior list have had proper pre-seasons.

I agree Tuco. :thumbsu:

And adding to that last paragraph of your post, our team is looking much more dangerous early in this season than past seasons. Our skills, persistence, ball usage (minus the St Kilda game) and our run and carry have been pretty good. And in saying that, last weeks game against Brisbane, it was a lopsided high possession win for us because we hand balled a lot, and if we did that in earlier season of 2007 and prior to that, we'd easily turn over the ball. But this time, we seemed to use the ball well despite hand balling more than usual. Lets just hope we don't hand ball too much against West Coast this Saturday.

The memory of McVeigh getting caught with the ball on the 50 by Kerr right at the death is still burnt deeply into my brain. I am having trouble letting go of that one, despite McVeigh's recent stellar form. Redemption beckons, Jarrad.

I was positive that Judd played last time, oh well...
Yes the previous Eagles poster was incorrect. Judd did play in Round 1 2007 and from memory he got Brownlow votes too. The key players missing in that game were Cox, Cousins, Embley and Hansen. We won that game mainly because we got out to a good lead early and caught Sydney a bit by surprise. I doubt that will happen this week, so I expect us to be very competitive but still lose the game unfortunately. Even if we lose this week (as I expect) and go 1-3 I still don't think our season is over - any team with players of the calibre of Cox, Kerr, Embley, Priddis, Stenglein, Wirrapanda etc are really only one confidence boosting win away from turning it around. Hopefully they continue giving opportunities to guys like McNamara, Masten and Ebert - they are our future.

Yikes. That was painful. But realistically, it was only because the Swans teased us back into having hope of a result that made it so disappointing. Down by 27 points around half time (or whatever it was) and not even looking like having the intensity required to compete, I basically thought everything was going as I had expected. But like the 06 final - the Swans just refused to lie down.

Hopefully Sat night's game will be another classic. :thumbsu:

Im excited.

Much respect to West Coast, both sides players rise to the occasion, anything is possible.

I am of the opinion that the cards will fall our way.

It's a true test of our new game plan, and kids.

To be honest i will be pretty dissapointed if we don't get over the line against the weakest Eagles side we have faced, should be a good game if it was at the SCG you could almost pencil it in :D

I'd be shattered, no two ways about it. In all honesty we should bury them, but any win would satisfy me this weekend. The odds are heavily stacked in our favour, but that worries me a bit.
