NORTH! 2016,2017,2018.
4 days after Armstrong was charged with doping, they took all 7 of his TDF wins off him, and stripped him of any other individual or team honour that he had accrued throughout his career.

Marion Jones admitted to a federal trial about her use of performance enhancing steroids on 5 October 2007. The same day she accepted a 2 year ban from track and field competitions worldwide. Three days later she surrendered all 5 gold medals she received at Sydney 2000 Olympics.

If there is any consistency in sport, then Jobe Watson, who admitted on live and national television that he took a banned performance enhancing substance in a year where he won the competition he participates in's highest honour, will surrender his Brownlow within the week and the ruling body (the AFL) will suspend him for a duration of time appropriate for his crimes.

If only! I'm sure it was all a ploy by Essendon given that Jobe comes across as the nice guy that wouldn't put a foot wrong. I don't care who he is, it should be stripped from him pending deeper investigation. If he keeps it and goes unpunished he's spat on the Brownlow and tarnished it for past and future players

It seems clear from Tim's comments today that Essendon's defence is based on AOD not being a banned substance at the time. After all, Jobe has admitted taking it, but Tim then says they didn't take banned substances.
So the legality of it under anti-doping rules appears to be the foundation of their defence.
They will certainly push that line. AOD (an experimental weight loss drug) is not explicitly banned but it is on the catch all list as not approved for human use. It is a drug that has undergone human trials but failed to have the effect the owners were looking for and as such they did not bother getting it approved for use via the national health authority, which would remove it from the catch all clause and make it legal.

Essendon will argue that it is a matter of process that has them in this position, not the actual benefits of the substance, given that it appears to be the simple lodgement of application for approval that is the problem. This though raises two issues.

1) If the clinical trials have shown no clinical benefit from the drug, then why are *Essendon using it? This question is framed by the knowledge that this drug is rife in the body building industry as a fat burner and toning agent.

2) What will happen if *Essendon are given the all clear based upon this defence?
WADA will need to change their laws regarding the use of clinically trialed and safe drugs that have not been given approval for human consumption by a national authority to allow these drugs to be administered to athletes or they face case after case of allegations of breaches of the WADA catch all clause. Will WADA be comfortable with allowing athletes to use various drugs with no discernible benefits? Will this lead to athletes using various combinations to try to find a combination that delivers a positive outcome?

Interesting time for ASADA/WADA. It's worth remembering that there is a lot of face at stake here too. When push comes to shove do I thing WADA give two shits about the AFL and *Essendon?

this all smells of PR spin, both jobe and tim following the script provided them by the damage control plan the PR company has put in place, trying to promote the view that the players did nothing wrong and are confident of being absolved, ok, admit AOD9604, what about the thymosin ? has been conveniently pushed into the background, was it on the consent forms ?
Yes, absolutely. The one thing you can read into the admission is that ASADA rolled at least one of the players into admitting he took AOD. Yet again, another *Essendon denial is shown to be an outright lie, so yet again, they cynically shift position.

On The Coach should be ashamed of themselves for being so complicit in this cynical spin exercise. I didn't think about it much at the time, but why would they get Jobe on last night? *Essendon didn't even play in the round just gone.

They might just get bitten on the thymosin, though - still denying that, are they? I'm sure they are until its use is also proven.

They are doomed. There is no avoiding suspensions and sackings.

If it is decided that you can legally use untried chemicals then it's open slather on any synthetic version of Speed/Cocaine etc. Change 1 molecule and it's the same as AOD - not banned, but sure as hell performance enhancing and illegal.

"You are responsible for what goes into your system, it's a strict liability," Fahey told AFL.com.au.

"Now whether or not there's any mitigating circumstances depends on individual cases, and that's a matter for ASADA who are currently investigating it.
Watson knew what was going into his system but put his faith in the wrong people. He, and the club, are ******.

And just in case anyone things ASADA and the AFL can do a nice, cushy deal...

The WADA boss said his organisation would review the Bombers' case only once the ASADA and AFL process had finished.

"We look at the results when it's concluded, we look to see if the code is being applied correctly, if it hasn't been applied correctly we have the right of appeal," Fahey said.

He said WADA could lodge an appeal on behalf of either his organisation or an accused athlete if it believed they had been treated unfairly.

"We can appeal on behalf of either if we don't believe the code has been applied in a correct manner," he said.

Given this is an entirely predictable outcome of what Jobe said, one wonders what game the spin doctors are playing here. The Watson Snr and Watson Jnr interviews were undoubtedly stage-managed, but it begs the question as to why. It almost implies that there is something even worse that they're trying to hide.

Interesting choice of person to take one for the team. Maybe they approached Spike to be the scapegoat, but he turned them down because he's pissed off that his swimmers mightn't swim.

Another article that sees things the way most of us do.

http://www.theroar.com.au/2013/06/2...antees-sanction-for-essendon-and-its-players/

I thought they were going for confusion over who took what, poor documentation etc as their way out. Making it about whether AOD is ok or not seems far riskier. Either they have the famous but unseen Danks letter where ASADA spell out that it is ok to take AOD in 2011, or... I don't know what.

They're trying to control the narrative again. Just like were shocked to be sitting here conference. If Danks is forced to spill the beans. There's a shit storm coming and We're innocent, we didn't know will get blown out of the water.

neither watsons are stupid. They've got something up the sleeve.

Jobe is dumb as dog sh!t. All he has up his sleeve is infected track marks from 40 injections of a banned substance. 1 phone call last year and this would not have happened but he was too interested in losing weight the easy way. The fat pig deserves 2 years and stripped of his brownlow.

Not so smart meow.

In this day an age where the Australian sports media has caught up to England in the tabloid stakes, where they attack any bit of information like a piranha to an open wound - cannot see the logic in what Jobe (should be referred to as *Jobe?...) did on TV last night.

My interpretation is that they are getting on the front foot to cushion the blow from a PR standpoint and make the ADA's look like the bad guys.

Who knows though, the amount of shit under the carpet at AFL House could fill Etihad.

Can't believe a thread I started while sitting on the shitter has grown into 107 pages. Surely there's a badge/medal for that?

Watson's Brownlow should be stripped and given to McKernan.
Thats some commitment to BigFooty right there.

I will have a chat to Chief and see if there is a Shitter thread badge for you.
