I got a genuine leather ball for Christmas and I love it. Not sure what the difference is between them ($104 my GF paid) or the actual AFL ones ($179).

I think the $170-80 ones are match balls made from kangaroo leather labeled on the AFL store as:

"The Official Game ball of the AFL. Buy the ball the players actually use on game day."

The other ones ~$140 are probably just standard leather: "Top Grade Australian Leather Australian Made."

So there you go, the full priced ones are the only "Official Game Ball" kangaroo leather balls, anything less than that isn't of the same or similar quality.

What's the difference in leather, physically? Never been lucky enough to have a random ball at the footy land near me so don't know what the game day balls feel like.

Big difference, some are blends, some are pleather, weights, thickness, quality etc. Also how well it feels in the hand, grip levels, how it holds in the wet etc.

I can't answer as well as some others, but I think it's lighter, more resilient and travels further than the cheaper quality ones.

This as well, proper match day footballs you can put your foot through them and they're tough as nails.

It's not just quality of leather, it's quality of build. It's like buying a Hyundai Coupe and thinking you bought a Honda S2000.

Sorry brudda but that $140 ball is in fact the $40 ball.

Still a good ball but ridiculously slippery. Make sure your boots are grippy.

$140 KB sherrins are identical to $180 KB match ball sherrins, full kangaroo leather and hand stitched, they just do not have the same logos on them, so you are paying the extra $40 to have an afl and sponsor logo on it. Kangaroo leather is generally prefered as it is lighter, and softer. same reason a pair of copas cost 200 odd in kangaroo leather, or near a hundred less for the standard leather equivalent. $120 sherrin match balls are machine stiched, and a non kangaroo leather. The $80 sherrin "lyrebirds" are of a lower quality leather, but still decent. Anything cheaper will be either a composite or full synthetic.

All the leather ones need a bit of breaking in to not feel like a rock. Getting a dodgy bladder however is pretty weird, I would definitely be returning it if it does indeed have an incorrectly shaped bladder. Get someone decent when you go in where you bought it, and they will likely give you a new one and send the other in for a claim.

Sherrins are not made from kangaroo hide. The kangaroo is just a branding for their top of the range ball.
Leather footballs are all made from cow hide.

new sherrins are a lot pointier than the old T.W's, old TW's were a lot rounder on each tip.

I went to the sherrin factory and bought a seconds match day ball, one little scuff on it - half price.

I won one a few years back in a Herald Sun competition, couldn't believe it they gave away about 10 for the day and I somehow texted through at the right moment.

But back to the point at hand, most quality footys these days need kicking in. As the ball goes through general wear and tear (scratches etc) and the finish is removed from the leather it will be easier to grip, same thing goes with shape and heaviness. This what I had to do with the above mentioned Sherrin, and even a Burley I got given recently shape has improved since I've been using it.

Pfffft.

01. Sherrin
02. Ross Faulkner
03. Lyrebird
04. Burley

Junior footy back in the 90s was all about the Ross Faulkner, not a bad ball. They never forked out for Sherrins back in the day, but the RF was a suitable substitute. I never even kicked the Sherrin I won at the footy club raffle, it's still on the desk signed by the 96 Essendon team.

I'm still pissed someone nicked my Daicos footy at school. Hope they ended up kicking woeful bananas for the rest of their lives.

I dont have the guts to kick a $170 ball around :p

I own a match one with the 'SCOTT'S" logo on it and a gold Power logo which I received for my birthday years ago. I plan on getting that one signed by our next premiership team. I have had it out of the box though and it feels great, no problems at all.

I have another match ball which I won in a facebook comp, and it feels just as good. Thats the one I kick around, but I still feel bad for kicking it around even though I won it :p

Checked out the actual Sherrin website and apparently they are having a sale on now.. so the $150 KB footys are $128 inc shipping. Seriously tempted to buy it, but not sure I can afford it atm! As mentioned above as well, would feel bad kicking it around and damaging it! :p

Considering just buying a Burley instead, only $35 new and since Im in WA thats unfortunately the footys we use to play with anyway so I might as well get used to it? Plus I wont stress too much if I scuff it on bitumen or lose it..

Anyone can confirm that these are the ones used for WAAFL/WAFL matches?

Wasn't it during 2012 season that the umpires complained about the quality of the balls? The league increased the amount of balls that get sent to the umps changerooms before the start of play so the field umpires can sort through them and find a "good" one.

Apparently that was when Sherrin changed its supplier of leather which altered the end product some what.

I also heard that used AFL match day balls are recycled &' used in local leagues.
They turn the leather inside out & re-print on it, hence why Sherrins used in local leagues can be oddly shaped sometimes.

Fwiw just checked my one that my bro borrowed from his country club over the off-season. It's called Burley 'Premier', complete with official league sponsorship badges.

We kick it nearly every day and it hasn't shown any signs of deteriorating yet.

I'd be quite surprised if you could get a top quality one for $35. Despite what the Vics tell us, Burleys aren't that much worse than Sherrins.

This is the same ball (different colour though), selling for $104 from the website this pic is from:
