Replace Gumby with a tall marking midfielder.

  • Improves midfield rotations
  • no defensive pressure lost
  • Adds more midfield run into the 18 onfield
  • Still just as damaging, if not more than any 2nd string tall forward we plonk up there.
  • Our tall mids have shown they can take a decent mark in the forward line.
Downside is we need another ruck to help out 211.

One of Hannath, Clarke or Bradley needs to come into the side.

Replace the role, tall leading marker. Play the extra mid, rotate Barlow, Fyfe, Mundy through the position and run the opponent off their feet.

Who rucks when Sandi needs a a chop out? The tall midfielders? Pav? MJ? ZacD?

I understand everyone upset with the loss of Gumbelton but Taberner can hold down CHF no worries .
Pavlich can hold down the FF position and resting ruck to FP if Pav is getting monstered WTF it works for me

I am ok with one of Taberner or Hannath not both, and would prefer Taberner for a couple of reasons;

1) he is a forward and that is the area on our list of greatest weakness. Therefore anything that fast-tracks him is good. If he is anything like ready then I would give him a go and see how he does until Clarke, Griffin, Bradley or Gumbleton force that to change. Of course Hannath or Apeness could force the change too, but I am not expecting that.

2) Hannath reduces our mobility significantly, and while this may be ok if he was replacing Sandilands it worries me replacing Gumbleton. Taberner has far greater mobility, and while he may even lose the ruck duels we can design a strategy around that so long as he competes well enough.

I get really annoyed with peoples observations from afar about what is in a players head .

Pavlich isn't rated on the east coast because he isn't a clone of Cloke .
How many times have we heard the line about Pavlich not being hard at it in a contest .

Kenny
You have no idea how hard Taberner is and you wouldn't have a clue about his determination to make it in AFL football .
your condescending remarks are unwarranted

Taberner has done 1 preseason before this one and everyone involved in top level football will tell you it takes BIG GUYS a lot longer to get the body right.
Posters who have been to training and kept an Eye on the kid will tell you that he is a very good trainer and that he puts in the hard yards .

In training drills and match sims he knows where to run and is a good decision maker . Tabs is a good contested mark and a very good kick .

He lacks the build of a power forward but has added weight and power to his frame .

This kid can play and has the ability to become a very good AFL footballer .
He leaves nothing out there when it come to training .
The coaches are impressed with the questions he asks them about how he can improve as well he handles constructive criticism very well .

I don.t know if you have been to a training session but if not try and get down there and see for your self because none of these guys are there to just make up the numbers .

Sorry determination isn't the word. In his appearances at AFL level, we have seen glimpses of his potential. What we haven't seen is the aggression, demanding of the football, etc, to be a top forward in the AFL. I'm a big fan of Taberner and think he has similar attributes to Nick Riewoldt. I know he is only young and his body is developing. But with some aggression and will to run his opponent off their feet, I think he can become a household AFL name. In his appearances so far he has looked too timid so hopefully that comes with experience.

That's all I'm saying. I have no doubt he is determined to be an AFL player and trains at the level required.

Reality is that we have not seen enough of Taberner to make any sorts of judgement. Four very average games where we either got smashed (Geelong and Saints) or it was very low scoring (Adelaide and North). And none of them back to back to give him the opportunity to settle into the team. Hardly any type of audition for a KPF. One would be foolish to sum him up in this regard.

Coulda is right - those that have actually seen him at training would have an insight that other lack. Let's give him 5 or 6 games in a row and play him in the position he is intended for and then form a judgement.

Really hope we go with Tabs, he needs a chance to play some back to back games to improve, I've got a feeling if he gets three or four games straight something will click with him. And some game day feedback from Pav and Mayne will only do him good. Playing WAFL just isn't the same.

You sum it up quite well .
Lachie Neale didn't look too flash when he was brought into the team and it took him a number of games for him to believe he belonged out there but once he realized that he had what it takes we got to see how good he is .
Taberner will do likewise I'm sure .

Taberner is a young key forward, he's my buddy and I'd love him to be the second coming of Pav but he won't be. Realistically all we could hope from him if he were to play in place of Gumbleton is a goal a game at most. Taberner is still young, he is still developing, he is a key forward we won't see much of him for a few years yet.

In saying that he is destined for the Coleman :P

He's not that far away from being a regular player and he will be worth an average of 2 gaols a game mark my words .
I think this will be his breakout year . RTB and Pav have taken him under their wings .Sumich has spent a lot of time with him as well .
When Pavlich first started we saw the talent but played him down back and it took him some time to get into the forward line and then to kick goals on a regular basis .

  • What do you guys think about changing our backs a bit.. Just an idea that I'm not sure about, but what if Johno went forward and we had Smith playing loose man in defense?

Have you been to training at all .

I think you should if not just so that you get some understanding of the guy and how he goes about developing his natural talent .
He is not timid at training and doesn't take a backward step when there is a contest for the ball .

As stated not only by me but others including Sherrif ,Salim,Harry , JMT and E shed ,this kid has it all .

Given a regular spot in the team he will blossom ,the confidence will grow and people from other clubs will be saying "how come he went so late in the draft ,how did we miss him

Chris is that you ,Get back to Melbourne where you belong .

If we had Gumbleton I would tip our general gameplay to be more attacking than last year. No matter who comes in for him, I wonder of there is going to be a tendency to up the defensive aspect of our game. Hope not.

The game changer for us is DEPTH .
We have never had so much and yet so many of you still can't come to terms with it .

Guys and Girls we have never had this much depth in all departments of our team .
The engine room is FULL of A grade players .

The back 6 has 3 All Australians in it and we have 2 All Australian forwards .

We have recruited a quality mid /HFF plus out stock of draftees are coming along quite well .

The glass is half full not half empty

We will still try to be attacking mate. Ross still wants those extra 2 goals a game and Gumby being out doesn't change that.

I am not so sure but interested to see. 2 goals a game doesn't just come out of thin air, and Gumbleton was clearly an important part of the plan to achieve that result. Gumbleton was there to be a strong 2nd marking target and we have no-one comparable to simply bring in. That is a huge change.

An average of 2 goals a game huh? So 44 goals in a season? For a second year key forward? That would put him as the 15th highest goal scorer last year. Not going to happen. If he scores 10 goals this year the club, and him, would have done well.

Your forgetting Pav had limited games 013.His return to full fitness and goal potential will more than cover any lack of score from a young KPF
