I thought Adam Bentick's acceptance speech at the presentation was first class, and it is great to see a player who you know can play actually get up there and show they have more qualities than just playing footy.

Of the players you didn't mention, I'm going to mention Roberto Castello who had in excess of 20 possessions. He scrapped for the footy all day and showed clean ball handling skills at ground level on almost every occassion in the wet. He is a smart footballer. I doubt he'll get the recognition come draft time, but he is one bloke who really should go on and play VFL.

Agree with both points. Bentick's speech made for good listening. Very articulate and mature. Will make a good leader.

Also, I liked Castello. Exciting and looks like a character. Hope he has a future.

When are we going to get your summary weaver?

The moment it rained Murray were doomed. They are a team full of outside players and guys trying to get-by as inside players. They rely on their run and their pace. They don't have anyone who can win the hard ball.

Calder are a team of inside midfielders who like it tough and love difficult conditions. Their commitment to basic football fundamentals, and their evenness, are what makes them the top team.

The match was realy a non-event. Scouts won't have learnt much or changed their opinion of players much.

The ability of McLean, Bentick, Castello, Ezard, Hartigan, Iacobucci and Goulett to keep their head over the ball and win the contested possesions was basically the whole story of the match. The also didn't get cute when they won the ball.

Unfortuantely in modern football there is only space for 1-2 pure inside players per AFL team and the competition is fierce. Only McLean looks draftable.

I think we learnt that Daly and Dunn are caught between positions. Neither is a genuine midfielder. Daly is not a key position player and may struggle to get drafted and Dunn is a flanker with ordinary kicking but a high leap. Bloom and Oswald are happiest a metre off the pack and not genuine inside players. Schilg is slow and can only play as a loose man in defence.

Gayfer is a good honest goer with a big heart and Mundy is light but promising as a fullback.

I still think we will see more taken from Murray than Calder.

Goulett, May and McLean were the stars coming into the season but really only McLean delivered. Goulett has been very dissapointing but finally showed his form in the grand final. It probably won't be enough to see him drafted.

The player I was most impressed with was actually Ben Jolley. He is a lightly built winger with great stamina. He was unsuited by the conditions and is normally a receiver, but played a good game that was a little out of character, going in and winning his own football.

I suspect Calder will be the team to beat next year as well. They should get Iacobucci, Barling, Ezard, JD. Smith, JW. Smith, Maric, May, Betts, Anglin and Becker back. They may also get one of Jolley, Dawson, Trotter or Davis back as well.

Murray will graduate most of their list and might struggle.

It would be dissapointing not too see, Adam Bentick drafted!!, very very clean with the ball, ok skills, works his a*** off tackles and hits hard!! and sets a very professional level.

Ben Clifton will also be drafted i believe, works tiredlessly effort after effort, and works just as hard for his teamates. Makes contests and has taken some strong marks!! Has missed a few easier goals this yr but has shown he can kick a few.

Mclean is a star!! enough has been said already, he will definately be taken.

Jolley faded during the year, started off very very well, but in the harder closer games wasn't seen!! tends to go to ground alot. May take him a couple of years to fit in to AFL would get Thrown over the fence against the big boys.

I'd be extremely interested to see how a Calder Cannons Vs South Fremantle u/18's game would pan out. Probably the two most dominant colts aged teams in Australia for years.

Both packed with stars too

yeh fair call, havn't seen any of the Fremantle under 18's games but have heard a fair bit about them, i think the cannons would be a little deeper in talent and they would play against better competition.

I agree Goalden. I know you get to a lot of VFL/TAC games and would have heard most of the coaches at some stage during the season as well. Rob Hyde is by far the best speaker to his players at 1/4 and 3/4 breaks. He backs up what he says with stats, compares performances and pre-game goals with stats, demands more out of his players all the time, and is very good with his rotations of players.

Just finished watching the tape of today's game - much easier to see than it was at the ground. Obviously the players you mentioned were very good today Goalden. McLean was the right choice for the medal, he was very good. Goullet played very well, and Hartigan was another who worked really hard in the conditions to get the footy clear for Calder. I think you would struggle to find a better team of players, and the best thing is not one of them is scared to put their head over the footy.

Another one in a similar position is Natale Caruso who also has a lot of very good characteristics and is a player who is one grab all the time below the knees.

As bulldog_54 said they will get a few players returning next year. Obviously May and Betts are two who are fairly well known, but I think Jesse D Smith and Jackson Barling both are capable of being drafted in 2004 if they continue to work hard.

For Murray, most of their players were disappointing. Two goals - and one of them was from a free kick. As far as best players go, Mikal Bloom was the obvious one I think he topped their possessions at the end of the day. Will Gayfer put in a good show as a leader, but there wasn't much else for the Bushrangers. The good news is the Ovens and Murray Footy League has a netball competition :D (a bit harsh but I had to chuck that one in) :)

For next year obviously Brett Deledio has a future, while Marcus Drum in defence was very good last week but didn't have the same effect today. Both those boys are 16 years old and will be better for the experience.

I think it is really disappointing to see the TAC Grand Final get played at 9am and end at 11.30 in front of virtually no crowd at the MCG. The players would love getting onto the MCG on AFL GF day, but from a spectator viewpoint it doesn't work. The last two years have been terrible atmospheres. They need to get back to the 10.15am starts, at least by 12 you start having people stroll into the ground.

The best team walked away with the TAC Cup in 2003 - well done to the Calder Cannons.

Any likes with maric, becker, and (davis & anglin) finals players who you didnt mention footyman??? All eligable to play again in 2004 with may and betts? Do you think any of them will go this year???

Maric is going to screening but i don't know who nominated him because he only played 3 or 4 games before the nominations needed to be put in. Might turn out alright next year but I wouldn't draft him this year.

Becker was very good back in Round 14 at Box Hill against Eastern picking up 29 possessions and you could see he was playing confidently that day handling the ball cleanly and being pretty agile bauking blokes. If he goes on next year to play TAC Cup like that then he will be a very good player. Good size at 183cm/74kg, natural left footer, and he will probably grow a bit more over the off season. There were obviously some good signs from him in 2003 especially some of his marking overhead was very good. He didn't play the prelim or grand final though.

Anglin didn't play a lot of TAC Cup this year but had some good performances in the backline in the finals. The one thing he did that stands out to me was that smother in the last quarter of the first final against Murray - those sorts of goal saving desperation really stands out.

I guess of the four players you asked about Ronnie Davis would be the most likely to be taken with a late pick this year. Goes about his footy with a bit of toughness, and is a very hard running player off half back. Had some very good games and had some ordinary ones as well. I thought games like the one he played against Geelong in Round 9 would set him up for being drafted where he had 25 possessions and a ton of handball receives just hard running all day off the half back line, but there were probably other games where he ran off so much that opponents could also do damage when the ball came back the other way. I'm guessing he will get his chance as a midfielder next year in the TAC Cup so it will be interesting to see how he goes in there. Had a good experience with Vic Metro.

What do you think about those player Rooboy36?

Cannons Players

Have watched a lot of cannons footy this year, agree with comments in response to rooboy36 questions.

Re Anglin, he played majority of footy this year for Assumption, did very well by all accounts
