TAC Cup Season 2017

Says a lot about the standard of the TAC Cup at the moment when there are more recruiters at some of the school footy games than the TAC Cup today.
How stacked is Geelong Grammar this year?

I have no idea which Private schools are in what comp, and which kids are committed to their school ahead of TAC Cup, but how can a school like Geelong Grammar have kids in two different TAC Cup teams? Surely all the kids should also be part of the Geelong Falcons.

I have to agree..TAC still better but feel that it could all become a school competition in the future. IMO tough on Geelong Grammar kids going back to Pioneers for 3-4 games and having no TAC training to attend.

Geelong Grammar stacked with some very good players O'Brien, Brander, Daniels, Dow, Caldwell - Haileybury arguably the team to beat in APS with Davies-Uniacke, Brayshaw, Constable, Clavarino, M.King, B.King.

Lots of schools have kids from multiple zones within their squad - Haileybury for example have Dragons, Ranges, Stingrays and Knights players on their list.

Those King boys can play a bit

Because schools like that can have boarders or travel from out of town each day to attend the school.

Eastern Vs GWV Rebels Round 5

Eastern 10 9 69
GWV Rebels 18 14 122

Eastern
Best Players: Tom North, Harrison Nolan, Josiah Duncan, Ben Cardamone, Cody Hirst, Kieran Urquhart
Goal Scorers: Josiah Duncan 4, Cody Hirst 2, Jaidyn Stephenson, Tom North, Shaun Lovell, Kaleb Van Beek

GWV Rebels
Best Players: Jordan Johnston, Callan Wellings, Naish McRoberts, Matty Lloyd, Tom Berry, Trent Reed
Goal Scorers: Jordan Johnston 6, Callan Wellings 4, Charlie Wilson 3, Naish McRoberts 2, Aaron Shepherd 2, Cooper Henson

Eastern
2. Tom North

North was a clearance machine and a clear best on ground for Eastern. North was huge in the clearances winning a lot of hard and contested footy and working hard even on the outside to win as much of the ball as he could. North was an attacking threat kicking an early goal from 50m out and working hard forward of centre to get dangerous. North’s kicking was shaky at times but plenty of his possessions were under pressure with a lack of help again in the midfield.

26. Harrison Nolan
Nolan again was a pillar in defence winning plenty of intercept and contested marks and providing good long rebound with his kicking very solid on Saturday. Nolan later in the game was moved into the midfield where he used his bigger body to crash packs and lay strong tackles. Nolan loves to use his body to influence a contest and that was very evident on Saturday. Nolan is quickly becoming one of the most solid key defenders in this years draft.

16. Jaidyn Stephenson
Delivery inside 50 was terrible for Stephenson who struggled to get into the game. Stephenson worked his hardest to try and make the most of Eastern’s forward 50 entries he pressured hard and always kept the Rebels defenders on their toes. Stephenson was later used in the midfield and in defence to get his hands on the ball more but he lacked impact and he really did need more support from his teammates.

19. Josiah Duncan
Duncan was a shining light for Eastern providing a spark up forward. Similar to Stephenson he has a nice leap and clean hands overhead and funny enough has a very similar body shape to Stephenson. Duncan looked threatening every time the footy got near him and he was classy with ball in hand being able to hit passes and kick goals from challenging positions. With this performance ill have being keeping a good eye on Duncan in future games because he may just become a draft bolter with more performances like this.

GWV Rebels
10. Jordan Johnston

Johnston proved to be a handful for the Eastern defenders kicking 6 goals with 4 coming in the 3rd quarter. Without a single goal in the 1st half he still provided a few highlights with some nice leaps and good ball use at half forward. In the 3rd quarter he was too much for Eastern with his speed on the lead, clean hands and leap making him impossible to stop and his accuracy from set shots was brilliant. A player early in the year destined for big things hasn’t shown his full potential but on Saturday that potential was realised and now Johnston will be firmly back in recruiters thinking.

2. Callan Wellings
After missing out last year Wellings has taken his 2nd chance with two hands today kicking 4 goals from the midfield proving he shouldn’t be overlooked again this year. Wellings was all class today with his work in the stoppages and cool head under pressure a highlight. Wellings goal in the first quarter coming from a stoppage was just a taste of his class in that area he was able to win some classy touches but he was also able to lay 14 tackles in a complete midfielder’s performance.

24. Matty Lloyd
Lloyd isn’t eligible till next years draft but he looks a player to watch with his classy work at half back on show again on Saturday. Lloyd was super composed with ball in hand and very efficient by hand and foot, Lloyd just doesn’t panic when in possession and will generally put his teammates in a better position. Lloyd seems to have natural leadership and oozes class and he is building nicely towards his draft year next year.

13. Tom Berry
Berry worked tirelessly in the midfield constantly putting his body on the line and working the ball forward for the Rebels. The brother of new Brisbane Lions recruit Jarrod, Tom isn’t eligible until next years draft and is another to look out for, his kicking was hit and miss at times but his attack on the ball and courage couldn’t be faulted and he was a key cog in the Rebels midfield on Saturday.

Dandenong Stingrays vs Calder Cannons Round 5

Dandenong 14 17 101
Calder 9 9 63

Dandenong
Best Players: Riley D’Arcy, William Hamill, Mason De Witt, Tom De Koning, Josh Bateman. Hunter Clark
Goal Scorers: Riley D’Arcy 5, Jai Nanscawen 2, Dylan Morris 2, Jamie Plumridge, Tom De Koning, William Smith, Josh Bateman

Calder
Best Players: Dylan Landt, Mitchell Podhajski, Ben Caluzzi, Jesse Firebrace, Brad Bernacki, Lucas Cavallaro
Goal Scorers: Jack Evans 3, Jesse Firebrace, Dylan Landt, Jacob McNicol, Jake Firebrace, Matthew Borg, Mohammed Moustafa

Dandenong
Riley D’Arcy

D’Arcy was a handful for the Calder defence with his contested marking and solid body too much for them. D’Arcy started the game on fire kicking 3 goals his power and clean hands overhead where a feature and was often lined up with some of Calder’s better defenders. Later in the game despite ending with 5 goals things didn’t quiet go to plan with a few frees and a 50 against him, its good to see his aggression but he may need to control it a little more. D’Arcy’s field kicking was fantastic and he often moved the ball quickly, I would like to see him used up the ground a bit more.

William Hamill
Hamill isn’t eligible till next year but he proved he was a player to watch with his class of half back exceptional all day. Hamill is still only light but he puts his head over the ball and he was extremely clean at ground level and with his disposal. Hamill had a great mix of attack and defence often running of his man to provide rebound but also working hard to stop goals and make spoils. It was a complete defenders game and I look forward to seeing him played in the midfield next year.

Hunter Clark
Clark looks set to go high in this years draft but he was on light duties on Saturday playing mostly of half back before being unleashed into the midfield late and looking very good in the last quarter. Clark was very confident with ball in hand early on not often flustered and his long kicking on both feet again a feature. Clark is an interesting player to rate this year because even a low game like today he still did some very good things especially late.

Tom De Koning
De Koning started the game like a man possessed hitting packs hard and really having an influence forward and in the ruck. A knock ive had on De Koning is his attack on the ball and it was brilliant today although it droped of a little the longer the game went on but seeing the intent was fantastic. He really presented well and took some very nice marls, he only kicked the 1 goal but it was a classy one hard in the pocket. More games like this could see De Koning’s stocks rise.

Calder
Dylan Landt

Landt was a workhorse in the midfield he won plenty of contested ball and worked hard to be an option on the outside. Landt showed some good speed with one goal coming from his speed out of a stoppage, Landt moves really well in traffic and his use by hand was very classy. Landt did everything you could ask for in the midfield, he won contested ball, uncontested ball, laid tackles, put on good blocks and ran his guts out, a clear standout for Calder.

Mitchell Podhajski
Podhajski had a really solid game with his ball use and decision making exceptional in defence. Podhajski has been one of Calder’s most solid players all year with his ability to shut down players and nullify one on ones and also intercept and provide good rebound and it was much of the same on Saturday. As good as he is in defence id love for Calder to give him a run in the midfield where he could use his clean hands and decision making to win some good clearances and add another dimension to his game.

Ben Caluzzi
Caluzzi was used mostly of half back with stints in the midfield, his long kicking was on show with his long kicks often going inside 50. Caluzzi works hard to receive the ball and generally made great choices with ball in hand, he likes to use his kicking which is a real weapon and he was mostly effective at half back. Caluzzi is a smart player and a great size for a modern player and his ability to play all around the ground and use his long kicking make him a very important player for Calder so the more his teammates can find him the better.

Jesse Firebrace
Firebrace brought a lot of energy on Saturday with his speed and ability to take the game on a real pleasure to watch. Firebrace worked hard all over the ground and provided a spark whenever he was near the ball, he tackled hard and was generally very clean with his possessions. I was good to see the Firebrace brothers sticking up for eachother and they really get you excited whenever they are near the ball. Firebrace is very small being under 170cm so he may get overlooked in the draft but seeing the rise of Caleb Daniel and McDonald-Tipungwuti will hopefully have clubs looking at this little rocket.

Other noteable players
Dandenong
Jamie Plumridge 2018
Lachlan Young
Tom Murphy
William Smith
Jai Nanscawen 2018

Calder
Mohammed Moustafa
Campbell Barton 2018
Jake Firebrace 2018

Yeah Wellings my boy!

After watching him last year I think he has improved this season and see him being a real shot in a draft pool with less depth. Was slightly unlucky last season. I described his performance as "lion heart" because he gets knocked down and just keeps getting up.

Northern Knights Captain Nick Coffield could be a riser this year. His stats in the opening 5 rounds of the TAC Cup season are as follows-

Round 1- 22 disposals 4 goals 6 marks 2 tackles

Round 2- 21 disposals 1 goal 7 marks 1 tackle

Round 3- 16 disposals 4 marks 1 tackle

Round 4- 14 disposals 1 goal 3 marks 3 tackles

Round 5- 34 disposals 1 goal 6 marks 4 tackles

How's Jamie tracking? Have been meaning to follow his progress as he's the son of a family friend, but haven't managed to make it out to a game as yet.
This was the first game I saw of his. Got nice skills and decision making and he moves pretty well and goes in hard when is his turn. Yeah that's the only game I've seen of him but he looked very good

I love this write up mate...but would like to know some of the other improvers and contributors as well. For example Andrews had 32 for the Knights on the weekend.

I just have a quick skim through. Will no doubt miss some of the big games. If you wish to look at the stats they're available on the TAC Cup website:)

TAC Cup Stats Central did a good write up of the Gippsland Power in their little article.

Interestingly, of all the individuals listed as high possession getters/contributors, these participants made the lists:

Gippsland
Stephenson 17 kicks
Quigley 13 tackles
Patterson 23 hit outs
Hudson 9 tackles
Stephenson/Porter 8 tackles

Sandringham
Gorman/Brayshaw/Montanaro 15 hbls
Brayshaw/Barrett 13 tackles
Sakeson/Montanaro 9 marks
Gibbons 29 hit outs
McLean 24 hit outs

On face value, it would look like Dragons had lots of the footy (actually 19 more disposals) and therefore played well - wouldn't it?

Frankly, what it doesn't show is Gippsland managed 51 to 33 inside 50s and comprehensively won the game by 69 points.

The only statistic which really matters.

Just sayin'

Sandy will usually have more of the ball. They play possession football and are the most skilful team by foot due to this. Gippsland need to move the ball quickly and use less possession to get it forward because they are statistically a lot worse by foot and need to get it inside 50 before the likes of Lohan, Nagle and Montanaro when he's back there can drift back and intercept because they play keepings off so well. If you get the ball off Sandy you can't allow them to get it back easily and in space.
