I thought I might just take a close look at the Eagles side for 2001 and see exactly what it looks like. I will make a few comments that I think on each player. It's quite lengthy so it may take a while to read.

Andrew McDougall- Great raps and is considered our best pick-up. Will probably get a game and should do well. A possible future champ.
Daniel Kerr- Played in the U/17 Australia vs Ireland side and got u/18 All Australian selection. Should be a good player in the future.
Jeremy Humm- Another u/18 rep. Half Forward/back with a tremendous work ethic.
Trent Carroll- Ex-Freo, started well but had a bit of a slow year. Could develop into a good backmen given a few more games. Has the size and strength to match it with the big centre-half forwards.
Dean Kemp- Reckon should have got the Club Champion award, is ageing but Should have 1 more good and consistent year left in him. Great Skillful Player.
David Antonowicz- Made his debut in 2000 and could get more game time.Should develop into a good player. Possible Centre-Half-Forward
Chad Morrison- Had a good season and is a good all-round player. Has got the skill and experience to have another good year.
Drew Banfield- Past Club champion and good midfielder who is looked up to by the other midfielders. Has great skill and is a handy player.
Ben Cousins- Is living up to his raps and could possibly get the captaincy. I a great young player and will take the Eagles to their future success i believe.
Michael Braun- Another good solid player who when in form is wonderful to watch. If that knee holds up will be great for the Eagles this year.
Ashley McIntosh- Has been great but is ageing. May find he struggles but may find him back to good footy.Knee problems could hamper his year.
Josh Wooden- Can't say i like him and hasn't consistently shown that he should get a spot. Has shown glimpses of great footy but consistency is a major problem.
David Sierakowski- I think was a good pick-up and should fit in well wherever he is placed. If played back will add good strength to the backline. Could be that Hard man some thought rintoul would be.
Scott Cummings- If can stay injury free will majorly boost the Eagles. After winning the Coleman medal in 99 had trouble with injury. Can kick goals and lenty of them.
Callum Chambers- Showed that it was worth keeping him on the list for 3 years without playing him. Part of the future of the eagles.
Michael Prior- Needed a change to bring his carrer back on track. Could be very handy wherever he gets played and has the skills to really be useful.
Rowan Jones- Will be a great player. Showed in the last 2 seasons that he will play hard and keep going. Has really impressed selectors this pre-season.
Michael Gardiner- N.O. 1 ruckman who will really come on. Everyone predicts it and it looks like happening. is having a great pre-season and should really help our nidfield get plenty of the ball. Is very agile for a big man.
Darren Glass- Another 2000 debutant who will with game time come on and be an important part of the eagles team. Looks like being a good player.
Michael Collica- Don't know much about him but have heard he can be a good player. Perhaps a winger that the eagles definately need.
Travis Gaspar- A future Key position player who may make his debut in 2001. Can't say anymore as I don't know anymore.
Glen Jakovich- 4 Times Club Champion and and AFL great. Will go great guns in 2001 and could be captain. He is the front-runner. Will be the CHB until he retires but there aren't really any signs that that will be soon.
Greg Harding- From my hometown. Needs to stay injury free to have any chance at doing any good. Have been told by freo supporters he wuld be good if stays fit.
Peter Matera- A west coast eagles great but has struggled in recent times. I reckon this is his last season but will give it all he has got and may play more up forward where he has shown he can kick a goal or 2.
Kane Munro- 2000 debutant, there were so many. Should get more time this year and will grow in the game and should do well. Has good skill and a good footy mind.
Andrew Embley- Good skill and courage makes him good team player who really helps the Eagles out. Will show that he will show he means business this year. Phil Matera- Along with Cummings are the main prong of the attack. Kicks a lot of good goals and it is great to watch him rake the defenders down trying to outrun him. Has come on and will do really well.
Phil Read- Gutsy player who is a team asset. A hard man with a strong will and knows the task. Can go a little over the top but will hopefully find the happy medium
Andrew Williams- Has done well but now needs a good season to show he is the real thing. Can paly well and has the skill too but doesn't always show it.
David Haynes- Should develop into a good player for the eagles. An athletic player who is best suited at half forward or wing. At the 99 draft camp showed an extroadinary marking ability.
Adam Hunter- A potential fuul forward who could get some game play if cummings struggles. Will come on hopefully and show his talent.
Chad Fletcher- Good mid fielder who will come into his own showing his skill and ability to get the ball. Has a good look about him and should do well for the eagles in 2001
David Wirrpunda- Great to watch dashing from the backline. Superb player who if gets a whole season will carve his opponent to shreds. One of the best players on the list that will really help the Eagles this year.
Kasey Green- Showed in 2000 he wants a game and will play well and hard to get it. Should do well and show why he should get a game straight away this year.
Dean Cox- Our second ruckman who along with gardiner will probably carry a fair slice of the work after getting used to AFL. Has a lot of potential and could develop into a good ruckman.
Ryan Turnbull- Even though is still a good player this premiership player may struggle to get a game with the youth now started to come through. Gardiner and Cox are his opponents for a spot and they will probably get the nod. Has been a good player and could get a game in some other teams.
Richard Taylor- Has shown he can play but I don't think consistent enough. Don't know much else about him.
Andrew Donnelly- Did he get delisted and then picked up again. Also may struggle to get a spot but if can show the footy he has played then may still get a spot.

There, finished. From what I have seen it isn't really that bad of a list. A fair bit of youth now, only a couple of old guys like Kemp, McIntosh and Pe.Matera. The main factor that will make or break the Eagles is if that terrible Injury factor that hopefully won't hit again. If it doesn't I reckon you will see them as a 6-8 contender. I won't say they will win the premiership but they won't go ll that bad. What do you think.

Mark Merenda (8 at Richmond)

EKA a well put togther list lets hope that some of the young guys you have put the wraps on come along to be great players for the eagles.A s you are a awear of a lot of posters on this forum are not as confident as the eagles diehards of the eagles fortunes in the year 2001.

GO EAGLES.

Nice wrapup eagleskickass. I also would love some info on Donnelly, i think hes a great player and could kick alot of goals given the chance. But now im not sure if hes still on our list.

Any info would be appreciated.

Jod23, Donnelly is definately on our list. I thought he was delisted and then we picked him up again. That is why the poll is what it is at the Eagles Website.
I will do a profile on Judgey then.
Ken Judge- Showed at Hawthorn he can get a team of the bottom of the ladder and work them up. Probably should have got them to the finals but left a good list for Schwabb. Was left an ageing squad at the Eagles and then the Injuries hit. Has now got a much better list with some great youth. Should develop these players this year and have some success. Should be a good coach for the rebuilding process

Ken Judge - soft forward pocket who was one of the lesser lights in the star studded hawks outfits of the early 80s. Went to the Bears and did nothing. A coach with a propensity to get some good wins before contract renewal and then have a losing streak once the dotted line has been signed.

Eagles on paper have arguably the weakest forward line in the league. They have no center Half forward to speak of, no strong marking option for that matter. There main attack option is Phil Matera who is a crumbing player. They recently lost there two top forwards in Gehrig and White.Sure Gehrig was down and out but he still attracted the oppositions main backman. And White was a pivitol player in the eagles line up.When he performed they preformed. He was Cummings main ball provider. And saw the writing on the wall at the end of last year and so left.Along with Malthouse the year before.Cummings is a lug, the most one dimensional player in the league.

While there midfield is arguably one of the best.Cousins,Braun,Morrison,Kemp and Matera are brilliant. There ruckman in Gardiner is awesome.Yet do the two cancel eachother out.
NO.
Strong forward line does wonders for Teams.Essendons Midfield on Paper isnt strong, but when the players know that everytime they get it in there forward line it isnt going to be repelled and they are going to goal more often than not, ordinary players step up a notch.Loylld,Hird,Lucas,Rioli and so on influence Essendons not so strong Midfeild.Eagles have the opposite problem, and so even the strongest midfield will loose heart if the ball is getting repelled time and time again.

Eagles Backline is aging and aging fast.

Sorry Sabre, you got it wrong.
Lets start with the Mitch White. He was offered a one year contract and wanted two years. He wanted to finish his career at the Eagles but Judge wouldn't give him two years. No writing on the wall bullcrap, he wanted to stay.(his words)
Next Scotty Cummings. Coleman medallist and top player. I don't care how many dimensions he has got he is a proven top forward as is Phil Matera. Andrew Donnelly is also a top half forward that was forced onto the ball last year due to the Eagles injury situation and we have Andrew Embley who will be a real force this year. Add Sierakowski and Wirrpunda and the forward line is formidable. Gehrig didn't play last season and White played 11 of which 6 were injury carrying. We also have Troy Wilson now and even Trent Carrol can play CHF.
Don't forget that the last real marking CHF we had was Ross Glendenning and we have been in ten finals with two flags without one.

The ageing defence is actually getting younger. Old Metropolis for young Harding. Bluey replaced by Glass. Carrol in the wings for MacIntosh.

2001 is going to be a great year for the Eagles and 2002 is Flag time.

Eagles Backline is aging and aging fast.

This season our forward line may look a little like this
FP Phil Matera FF Scott Cummings(possibly Adam Hunter or Troy Wilson) FP Peter Matera
HFMark Merenda(if can stay fit)Daniel Kerr CHF Andrew McDougall(our best pickup, is very strong over head. We have 3 young possible CHF) HF Andrew Embley
Quite a young forward line but isn't that bad if you have seen these players play.
This Season our backline will probably consist of
Trent Carroll- Young
Darren Glass- Young
Glen Jakovich- Experienced but not old. Is Still a great CHB
Phil Read- Young
David Wirrpunda- Young and Dashing
Ashley McIntosh- Is definately ageing and may not see much time in the backline
David Seirakowski- 27-28 and I have heard will probably play back.
Michael Prior- Good experience and should go well, not that old, 27-9
Michael Collica- Young with good skills

Our forward and Backline is very different to last year. Sure we lost Gehrig and White but with the recruits we have they should fill in. We do have a great mid-field who will once again do well. Our backline is now actually rather young but will be strong with most of the players having 2-3 years experience now. Only McIntosh
is really that old now.

Ok frodo lets start with mitchelle white.
Ok you have explained to me the reason why he left.
Now tell me
Will he be missed?
Can you fill the Gaping hole?

Yes Cummings is a proven full forward for the first year at his club. But who did he recieve the ball of most last year?
Thats right white
Can he be the main key position player down there withouth the likes of White and Gehrig.
No
Ok now on to your replacements
Carrol:Quality discard,backman not a Half forward,hardly a replacement
Wilson
biggrin.gif
rafted in the ROOKIE draft, westar player that has been over looked year after year, replacement NO
Andrew Donnelly:Top Half forward, pfftt you make me laugh.Top half forward=Carey,Grant,Hird,Whitnell
Up and coming full forward=Pavlich and Tredera.Donnelly doesnt fit into any of those catergories. If anything he is one of the weaker half forward going around.
Replacement:NO

Ok you may have lacked a real CHF,but white has a done a damn good job.Either way you look at it forward line is screwed. You have no marking forwards to speak of.You look at every team in the Afl and you will find at least 2 strong marking options. You look at West Coast list and you find nothing.

You might find it hard to believe but I have nothing against the eagles. Its time to realise that your club is on the slide and will take a few years to recover.

I don't really expect immediate success, I do think we will make 7-8 though. In my above post Donnelly isn't even mentioned. We do have 3 strong markers. Tey are all young and may not make a huge impact this year but yes, in few years will. With them the forward line isn't too bad. I really believe we don't have that bad of a forward line now, even though it won't be the best in the AFL the youngsters will show they were good pickups.

Who cares about the forward line?? Melbourne's only good forward is Farmer as Schwarz and Neitz were used more on the ball or in defense last year. And they finished 2nd. If the midfield doesn't get the ball to the forwards they won't score anyway. And if a team scores 150 but their opposition scores 180 they'll lose anyway. The forwards are the least important in a team, any player can fill their position if need be.

------------------
Go Eagles!!!

Well thats a good point, daddy, if the service is there from midfield anyone can take a mark but you can have the All Australian forward line and with no midfield they wont do anything.

C'mon Sabre, let's compromise on $50 for who finishes higher. dockers or EAGLES.

You Eagle fans should be knighted for your optimism.

Donnelly, Embley, Carroll.

That is enough to make anyone laugh, but at least you believe.

The era is over, get on with things eh.

Cummings is a Coleman medalist which says enough right there. No one doubts Phil Matera talents. We all know Peter Matera can kick goals and will prolly play forward.
Thats as far as im willing to go. All the rest is just a wait and see. We have one of the best midfields in the competion so they should create many opportunities so not all is lost. Wouldnt mind some of that $50 action though heheh.

Oh and im a Donnelly beleiver, ive seen him play and i reckon he could be very good if given the opportunity. But as i said we'll all just have to wait and see.

Oh and Sabre what is so good about yout forward line?? Modra (ageing) Waterhouse (inconsistent) no real goal sneak to speak of unless you play Bell up forward. Pavlich (unproven).

eheheh this is going to be sweet.

Modra is aging but still one of the most talented forwards in the league. He is able to play off the ground better than anyone, take big marks and leads well. Why you ask doesnt he kick more goals?
Simple our delivery.Throw him in a top 8 side and he would kick a bundle. In your opinion is 60 goals plus a season inconsistent?
Because that is what waterhouse was worth last year. Not to mention he was a target and was able to pull down the big mark.Someone you lack,he was it Gehrig could have been.
Pavlich is a first year player (sensation
smile.gif
),lets see if mc Dougal does as well shall we.
And if you ask anyone on this board who they would prefer out of modra and cummings you will get the same answer.

Sabre, He may be able to play off the ground better than anyone but its what happens whilst he is on the ground that matters

And I reckon most forum members would choose Cummings over Modra.
Madra and Waterhound together would be no swap for Scotty.

"Michael Collica- Young with good skills"

???

Must be another Collica than the one from the Hawks.

24, one speeded 6'1 winger. Good mark. Cant kick for #^$* hanballs average and ground skills just going. Might be an okay tagger but dont look for anything more because thats all he has. Hope he does well for you though i did like him just we had to many of the same type.
