That sounds good in theory. If the Saints don’t trade and we match we are stuck with the 4 year deal on big money. There are no indications we are prepared to offer him such a contract.

I just don’t understand the level of confidence on here.
Because list managers aren’t stupid. James Gallagher certainly isn’t and when they decided to pursue Brad they certainly would have thought about what it will cost them to get him, and so would have already decided that they want us to get band 1 so that they get him for nothing. It would make no sense to go “let’s offer Brad Crouch $600k and we will just deal with trade problems later”
Right now there would be 16 clubs hoping we don’t get band 1 compo and 2 (us and the Saints) hoping we do. It will happen.

And if it’s $675k on 4 years and they think we won’t match?

It will be pick 2. The main reason Brad is desirable is because he costs nothing draft capital wise. It would make no sense to hold out on $50k a year only to have Adelaide match when it can be the easiest transaction of trade week If you pay the extra.
also us getting 2 only changes their pick from 15 to 16, whilst North would have moved from 2 to 3, which I have no doubt would have influenced them with Brad.

No it won't.

The AFL won't give us band one compo, because we already have pick 1, and North Melbourne are in a world of trouble (conveniently ignoring the fact they smashed us by 12 goals).

The AFL likes to control the narrative, Hunger Games style. If our first pick was pick 12, then it would be band one.

Do I detect a tiny, weeny bit of cynicism in your tone.😂

If they are accurate and it has to be over $700k for pick 2, what if they are paying $675k for 4 years. Are we going to want to match that? We don’t know if the club will, that a sizeable contract to match.
Under current rules 675 will not be enough even with his age bonus points, 700k would be borderline,
However, if there is a wage reduction and that a big if 675 comes into band 1 territory.

If we don't get band 1 the fans will be Hella pissed with the club, if we do get Band 1 fans will be doing laps around the pool table.
We are walking a very fine line here

If we don't like it, we can go support another club. That's the company line.

How do we go about doing that, though? Contract-wise, their offer is their offer
Only once it is officially lodged.

Right now, Brad Crouch and management know what the offer is. No doubt that will have been relayed to the Crows.

Now we might look at it and say, "5 years at $650k isn't enough for a band 1 compensation". So we go tell his manager we are thinking of matching, but we probably wouldn't match $700k.

St. Kilda say, "well we can't fit $700k in the salary cap, BUT we have this player here on a 3 year 350k a year deal that we might be happy to trade out for a late pick". That would give St. Kilda the cap relief needed to fit the deal in.

We accept the player (even if we don't really want them), knowing that the list spot it takes up and the extra $$$ are all part of the deal to push the compensation over the line in to Pick 2.

Then St. Kilda present the deal to the AFL.

Luke Dunstan?

Not sure what happened to Luke this year, but if we want to replace a ball-hacking accumulator (Crouch) with another cheaper ball-hacking accumulator (Dunstan) then maybe... why not?

Yes it does, just one of a number of factors including the salary and age as well. Past history suggests 700k+ over 5 years will trigger band one.

Once again, the length of the contract is only used as a tie-breaker between players if they're ranked the same in the AFL's Free Agency Compensation list.

Dunstan has 1 more year left under contract at St Kilda before he hits Free Agency.

I dont want him but if it means we get pick 2 then just do it.

Hartigan pursing FA too. It's tucked away at the bottom of the article

This is fair enough imo. We were only ever going to offer him a year while we get games into the kids and with his form this year it’s reasonable that a club would give him two years

Good on him and I wish him well
