If we take Hollands at 6:

  • Take Cox at 7
  • Take Reid at 8 (one tall mid plus four key position players seems like a good haul to me, especially since Hollands seems to be the best mid in the draft)
If we take Hollands at 6, I'd definitely still be taking Perkins and either Cox or Reid. We need forward line x-factor not just midfield class. Two big bodies are better than 1.

If for some reason were starting Hooker and Zacka. Once were 2 - 2 or worse after 4 theyre not picked again till the last round assuming finals is out of contention

There gone next year, wouldve been this year had it not been for contract. They arent going to help us win a flag or finals in anyway

Pretty keen to see Slambrose back in action
Be nice to see him on the field. Imagine him playing a whole season? We have moved on two perennial injury plagued players, just Ambrose and Laverde left - I hope they both have a clear run at it in 2021.

So we have 6 open spaces, assuming we redraft Clarke and Gleeson. Breaking it down:

Defenders:

Key Defenders: Michael Hurley, Cale Hooker (fwd), Patrick Ambrose, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher; rookie: Cian McBride
Medium Defenders: Aaron Francis, Jordan Ridley; rookie: Martin Gleeson
Small Defenders: Mason Redman, Matt Guelfi (mid), Lachlan Johnson (fwd), Nick Hind (fwd); rookie: Ross McQuillan, Tom Hird (mid)

Midfielders:

Inside Midfielders: Andrew McGrath (def), Darcy Parish (fwd), Dylan Shiel, Dyson Heppell, Jye Caldwell; rookie: Dylan Clarke (fwd)
Outside Midfielders: Kyle Langford (fwd), Devon Smith (fwd), Zachary Merrett, Tom Cutler (def), Brayden Ham (fwd); rookie: Will Snelling (fwd)
Rucks: Nick Bryan (fwd/def), Andrew Phillips, Sam Draper

Forwards:

Key Forwards: James Stewart, Harrison Jones, Peter Wright (ruc)
Medium Forwards: Jayden Laverde, Jake Stringer
Small Forwards: David Zaharakis, Irving Mosquito, Ned Cahill (mid), Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti

My ideal scenario would be to get one key defender, one or two key forwards, two or three inside midfielders and maybe a ruckman (or one of the key forwards can double as one). So hopefully Thilthorpe somehow slips to our three picks, we pick up him, Perkins and O'Driscoll, then Kyle Dunkley as a DFA.

Seniors:

FB: Aaron Francis - Michael Hurley - Mason Redman
HB: Jordan Ridley - Patrick Ambrose - Nick Hind
MF: Kyle Langford - Dylan Shiel - Zachary Merrett
HF: Devon Smith - James Stewart - Will Snelling
FF: Jake Stringer - Peter Wright - Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti
OB: Sam Draper - Andrew McGrath - Darcy Parish
IC: Dyson Heppell - Brayden Ham - Matt Guelfi - Jye Caldwell

Reserves:

FB: Lachlan Johnson - Cian McBride - Cody Brand
HB: Martin Gleeson - Brandon Zerk-Thatcher - Ross McQuillan
MF: Tom Cutler - Dylan Clarke - Thomas Hird
HF: David Zaharakis - Harrison Jones - xxxx
FF: Jayden Laverde - Josh Eyre - Ned Cahill
OB: Nick Bryan - xxxx - xxxx
IC: Cale Hooker* - Andrew Phillips - xxxx -VFL Player (Mozzie LTI)

*Put him on the bench because I wasn't sure if he'd play forward or back

So far, a net result of;

IN - OUT

Daniher > Wright(easy to see the replacement here)

McKenna > ???? (Hind??)

Fantasia > ???? (Not sure who we target as a small forward/midfielder)

Hibberd > Caldwell

Mutch > ???? (seems we're likely to relist Dyl Clarke as a midfielder)

Bellchambers > **** (happy to forgo this list spot in lieu of list reductions)

Begley > ???? (Archie Perkins please)

Crauford > ???? (perhaps Cox or Reid?)

Gown > ???? (Josh Eyre?)

McKernan > ????<Cody Brand? - KPP for KPP??)

Saad > ???? (I like the Robbie Fox shout out)

Townsend > **** (happy to forgo this list spot in lieu of list reductions)

Sydney's keeping Fox. They only delisted him because the AFL didn't tell them about the moving two senior players to the rookie list without having to delist and re-rookie them rule change.

Undertook a bit of a scan of guys under 30 who have put in more than one A grade season in their careers.

I found two players :(

Maybe not a bad thing though.
Time for the sum to become greater than it's parts.

If i'm drafting based on immediate needs
Perkins -> Heppell
Reid -> Hurley
Cox -> Ambrose

Looking at our current list and the make up of our best 22, we have a reasonably good opportunity to make a seemless transition from our current stars.

Do the match committee have the balls to play Hurley, Hooker, Zaharakis, Heppell, Ambrose in the seconds? We could have some kids fill there roles and do well or will the coach and co play there favorites?

The other glaring thing is establishing positions for a number of guys who don't necessarily have a specific role at AFL level.

I think it needs to be a mix of giving the younger guys games but not throwing them all to the wolves at the one time. They will need some senior guys in the side to help them with the transition and step up in speed that is required.

I reckon Hurley and Heppell out of that list play every week in 2021 barring injuries. I reckon we need Hurley's experience to teach all the young blokes and organise our defense. Heppell isn't even that old. If he gets fit again could have a number of good years ahead of him. Hooker and Zaka should be used sparingly. I'd use Hooker when we have injuries as cover either back or forward but he shouldn't be legit best 22. Zaka will probably play as a small forward. He shouldn't be a walk up start.

I definitely don't think we should be full don't play any older guys but it should be harder for them to keep their roles than in prior years. Ideally 2 of those 5 playing most weeks.

Yep.
Hepp is captain. we aren't going to drop him while he is.
Hurley is effectively a VC in many ways. What he needs is a system around him and the likes of Zerk & Francis to really step up and give him a chop out.
Both should still be decent players for the immediate future.

Speculation only, but this seems possible next year;
Ess 1st round pick
Coll 1st round pick (after splitting 2020 Pick 8)
AFL 1st round pick (compo if ZMerrett departs)
+ Davey twins as FS picks (?)

...and the back of my mind is thinking Josh Misiti is there somewhere?

The talls are just stupid now, in a good way.

We have invested a lot in tall players in the last 2 drafts.

As much as I appreciate the time it takes to develop tall players the need doesn't seem that urgent that we needed the second tall in the top 10.

Having said that I suppose we bank what we have now and round the list out.

I'd say Cox's athletic profile makes him somene we have to lool at as a CHF. Use the tank on the lead and the kicking to deliver the ball inside F50.

Long term, given the investment made we're looking at something like:

FB: Brand / McBride
CHB: Reid 3TD: Eyre

R: Draper

CHF: Cox 3TF: Jones
FF/R2: Bryan

As a raw set of attributes it doesnt get any better than that. Tall, super athletic and versatile.

It's a long way off, though. I'd be hoping Stewart and Wright own the forwad spots for the next 3 years at a minimum.

More immediately Reid and Cox play at half back.

Really like the Perkins selection too. He's as un-Essendon as a midfielder gets which is a very good place to start.

perkins does remind me of the talk pre-draft on Laverde
But i dont mind that. Laverde just never got a chance with injury. no reason to shy away from a tall, impact mid.

we're at 0 recognisable small mids
last spot will be an interesting one

Okay, breaking it all down (with essentially 2 players to add with Mozzie LTI):

Defence:

Key Defenders: Michael Hurley, Cale Hooker (KF), Patrick Ambrose, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, Zachary Reid (KF/Ruc), Cody Brand (KF); Rookie: Cian McBride
Medium Defenders: Aaron Francis, Jordan Ridley; Rookie: Martin Gleeson
Small Defenders: Mason Redman, Matthew Guelfi (OM), Lachlan Johnson (SF), Nick Hind; Rookie: Ross McQuillan

Midfielders:

Inside Midfielders: Andrew McGrath (SD), Darcy Parish (SF), Zachary Merrett (OM), Dylan Shiel, Jye Caldwell (SF), Archie Perkins (MF); Rookie: Dylan Clarke (SF),
Outside Midfielders: Kyle Langford (MF), Tom Cutler (MD), Dyson Heppell (IM), Brayden Ham (SF); Rookies: Will Snelling (SF), Thomas Hird (SD)
Rucks: Nick Bryan (KD/KF), Andrew Phillips, Sam Draper

Forwards:

Key Forwards: James Stewart (KD), Harrison Jones, Peter Wright (Ruc), Josh Eyre (KD), Nikolas Cox (KD/OM)
Medium Forwards: Jayden Laverde, Jake Stringer
Small Forwards: Devon Smith (OM/SD), David Zaharakis (SD), Irving Mosquito, Ned Cahill, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti

So essentially we have 15 KPP's on the list. Ideally I'd add Trew and Dunkley on top of that.
